A stope is a chamber left after drill blasting an adit to cone up under the strike ( mineralized fault ) so that when you blast out the ore it falls down into your ore cart saving you time and most importantly gruelling effort. You keep going up till it peters out. The chamber left is the stope. Normally square setted. Hope that helps. Hey you know Jeff williams ? Tell him Scottish Graeme sent u. In this case I would not say that's the case. At least from what I witnessed in the area.

Hydraulic and open pit mining will destroy the landscape, but deep mining such as was done in places like Tonopah do little long-term damage.
