Finally! After a long wait in Hammond IN we are entering the river systems that will take us south to the Gulf of Mexico! We learn a few things about the names of these first rivers and go through our fist locks. We are heading to the Free Wall in Joliet IL for the night with Flotilla 13.

Great video and as if on cue, the trains show up as massive props, lol. The first time passing under a train my son was about 2 years old and he instinctively new the train was so much bigger. His little face was scared but when realized we were safe he lit up like a Christmas tree. Thank you for sharing and bringing back some great boating memories. Enjoy the Ride, Bell

Glad to see your video I had almost forgotten about you guys. And what a great video this is going to be the gold standard of loop videos if you keep this up. Probably will get more busy when you start chasing the locks. lots of good information and well put together. I live around Louisville Kentucky you'll be turning left and coming up the Ohio possibly but you won't come this far. Safe journeys.

We also pronounce the first "S" in Des Plaines, as in the "dess planes" river. Not like Des Moines, IA where it's silent.

@cruisingandromeda
@cruisingandromeda 5 месяцев назад
The bridges were nerve-wracking! They always look closer, and you just have to trust the charts and current water levels. ( and we had our boat measured by surveyors to know the exact height :)

The reason for all the river name changes is because they don’t naturally flow together. Both the Chicago and Calumet rivers flow naturally into Lake Michigan. There is a slight rise in the land between those and the Des Plaines river. Basically a sub-continental divide between water that flows through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic vs. water that flows down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. The canal and channel(more recent) were dug to provide a connection for boat traffic/trade. And the reason it’s called the Sanitary and Ship canal is because, in 1900, Chicago famously also used this waterway to send its sewage downstream rather than have it go into Lake Michigan where it had been polluting the water supply. Which is why the Chicago River lock is right at the mouth of Lake Michigan rather than further downstream. And yeah, St. Louis was not at all happy to have Chicago’s sewage flowing down to it.

The sound of water splashing sounded better than any music out here! I don't like watching some screen saver pictures with someone's music of choice. Most neutral music is the sound of water and or nature...

Those electric fish fences are there to try to keep the Asian Carp out of the Illinois and the inland waterways. They work but I think they are in the Illinois. They will jump hit you and knock you silly.

I think this is one of the best explanation and video documentations of entering the great loop from Lake Michigan. Even though our boat has a low enough air draft to proceed either way your video clear up a lot of our guestions. Thanks and Goodonya.

Now I know what boating through an apocalypse would look like. Illinois River system has the worst scenery I ever saw, expect for maybe a neighborhood on the south side of Shitcago. Can’t believe I wasted my time looking at this very boring video. It was like watching paint dry on a rusty fence.

Hello Bill, This was our first taste of the rivers, and it was quite industrial at times for sure. We found it fascinating to see it by boat. The scenery changes fast, and there was beauty to be found. Thank you for watching :)

It's cool because it gives us ideas for our boat. We did the same thing, bought a new to us boat and have been updating it to make sure we are 100% safe when traveling. Our videos will get better as we get more time to start traveling but for now they are pretty much just us working on the boat at hammond.
