I'm a 49 year old beer league goalie (who started playing at 46). I can relate to this. I find being more of a "cheerleader" for your teammates when they play well in your end ("Great "D" guys!") or positive feedback will go farther than laying blame. Especially as someone like me whos trying to improve, have fun and "make it to work tomorrow morning without any physical problems to deal with!" And as a "non-chirper" even the opposing team will comment positively if I make a great save. as a side note, this also helps me as I watch my 12 year old Pee-Wee goalie son when he's on the ice. it helps to understand the difficulty and struggles we face as goalies and I relay that to fellow goalie dads when they are struggling.

On this take responsibility after goals. After a goal, I will say something to a defense man about what I could have done differently and find a lot of guys then will also say it’s not your fault. I cheer my team on loudly and try to communicate often to help out and then I find my guys do the same and cheer me on after a big save or period or try to pick me up after a goal. As a guy who subs a lot, I find doing this will have teams give me a call when they need me then

Having a positive attitude also helps your team forgive you when you goof up and let a softy in.
@KSanford33

100% agree with all of this! The one thing I reiterate to all my guys is, ‘We all have to get up and go to work tomorrow’ Oh, and one other tip I’ll add in: Do you have a vehicle with heated seats? Turn it on on your way to and from the rink. Your back will thank you

#1 thing I told my son when he said he wanted to be a goalie was this means you have to show up. When he was about 9 he woke up with a bit of a stomach ache and his game was in 2 hours. My attempts to find a replacement were futile so, and with his insistence we went to hockey. His team was struggling that season but for whatever reason that game they played a great game in front of him, it was tied heading into the 3rd. As he was switching ends he summoned me to a crack in the glass and told me he had literally shit his pants. I asked what he wanted to do and he replied "the game is close my teammates are depending on me I have to finish the game" and he did just that. My wife ran over to Walmart and grabbed him a change of cloths and we moved his bag into an unoccupied change room telling the team he needed to have a shower because we were going to wedding. I have no aspirations of him being an NHL goalie one day but that type of dedication hopefully provides some insight into how he will handle his responsibilities as an adult. Probably picked up his dedication from a certain goalie coach. Proud Dad Moment For Sure

This is totally what it's about. Goalies often play for free, and the best way to make sure you keep getting asked out is to be a goalie that your team enjoys. You don't need to be the best goalie, but if you put all of these 'hacks' in play, your team will love you, and the other team will as well (which will get you more invites to play...)

Great vid Keeks. I know you didn't necessarily put these in order, but #6 in probably the most important - just show up. 85% of the guys aren't all that hung up on winning and losing, they just want to play and they really can't if there's no goalie. The next to not be a jerk, either to your teammates or anyone (opposing team and refs). After that, it's all easy except for being old. :)

That comment look very sarcastic to me, lol! Everything I hate during warm-ups, especially the deking and close-end shots at start of warm-up when you're still cold and muscles not fully stretch. You should start with easy long shots and work your way closer to the goalie and keep the deking at the end. But beer leagues, everybody do whatever they want. Most try only to score and don't care about the goalie. I'm 56, I played and still playing in lots of leagues, and it's pretty much all the same. You adjust and try not to hurt yourself. Luckily, I never got injured seriously.

@@sergel.8876 sarcasm is like a second language for me! played when I was younger, went to the goalie camps, had a goalie coach, stop playing when I was 25. came back roughly in 2018, (39) gears different, had to dust off the rust. now Im 42, at 5'8 damn it, and flux from 140 -145.. having fun, laughing out there. *Only was at 165 once in my life and that was when I was working out eating 3k clean cals a day... too much fooood. Never was a hacker, slasher, even now, Ill sometimes pop a guys stick up, or anymore goof around, "Hey trade me sticks, I like your (brand name here). Looks nice man." Always was a humble goalie, and always cheered my team on, and under talking myself. Every goal, to this day, I always blame myself. (My goalie coach in 98 hated that, punishment in practice was, push the net around the rink 5 times full skate....) I stretch at home, and show up at the rink an hour before the game. Even though I know Im not going anywhere, Im not playing for free gear anymore, or money prizes, or anything, I still give it my all, I want my team to win, BUT Im also having fun anymore, and just laughing, sometimes goofing off. Chirping I only do when there is a player thinking he IS in the NHL, you know the guy, negative attitude, my chirps are few and in-between its light, its " Did you see that save wowzers!" - "Did you slip on that, that was slow" - " Are you even trying" Or I just simply do the Patrick Roy Statue of liberty.... thats the loudest chirp I do. 99% of the guys in our league are super nice, and I get along with, so we all get along on and off the ice. I understand its beer league, but I love my on and office practices now, love my games, and my custom gear, am I over doing it? cause this is all fun for me. LOVE your videos.

Actually, I'd be willing to bet the majority of people watching your videos are youth hockey coaches like myself. When I got my goalie coach certification from USA Hockey, they stated the biggest problem with young goalies is coaching and lack of. Lets face it, most parent coaches have kids that are forwards and they coach to those forwards. They ignore the goalies but on game day expect those goalies to show up trained and ready to go. Most young kids aren't going to sit down and watch goalie training videos but I will. I take your information and bring it to the rink and relay it to the young goalies on every practice. Again, I think you are coaching the coaches and doing a damn fine job at it.

The guys yapping and yakking all game long are the single braincell simpletons who rehearse their lines in the mirror and are so anxious to get it out.
