It has been almost a month since we started on the roof replacement and there has been one problem after another. We have a new crew and a much better weather forecast. Could this really happen?
This once abandoned Victorian mansion is undergoing a massive restoration. Designed by noted architect Nicholas Clayton, this Galveston historical treasure is slowly back to life. Restoration of this historic house is not easy, and the extensive yard and gardens add to the complexity and expense. Preservation of the original features is high on the priority list. Follow the journey from start to finish. It’s a tough, hot, sweaty, and very expensive road but worth every minute of it.

The shutters have stood the test of time, they will look fantastic once painted again. You could get 3d printed finials and paint them to look clay while you wait for clay ones to be made. The roof deck is in great condition 2x👍

The perspective in the intro shot is enchanting. Maybe the time of day helps as well. Would be a sweet surprise to open in a different scenic spot around the property each time, though that’s usually dependent on what needs being worked on. Great to see no delays, besides the Galveston weather, on the roof. It’s actually happening. And in the literal mist of the rain, it looked like a glorious day. So happy for this huge stress reliever to be so close to completion. What will happen to three original metal vent covers surrounding the top most section of the roof?

I bet the vertical roof decking was done for a similar reason you’d put porch floorboards running away from a house. To direct water away from the roof. Especially under a starter coarse of shingles or slates. I’ve never seen that done before and I’ve watched at least one episode from every season of THIS OLD HOUSE. About 3D printing the finials: make sure the material they’re made of will withstand UV sun exposure. Even the “exterior” plastic shutters from big box stores will fade over time. It seems like I’ve seen a company that was still hand making Spanish roof tiles somewhere in the southwest so someone like that may know where to have new ones made

This may be a great question for some of the facebook old house groups. We are just starting to research the three D printing. I read somewhere that they can actually print with Terra cotta. If you come across the name of the tile maker please let us know.

We do have several other volunteers who worked on the shutters. When this video was taken, we had only had them back for two days. In addition, some of our volunteers do not want to be on video, so we respect that.
