Sa Calobra (Coll dels Reis) with Fränk Schleck - Cycling Inspiration & Education

With 26 hairpin bends, including its iconic 270° twist right at the very summit, there's little wonder why the road from Sa Calobra to the Coll dels Reis is the most famous on the whole of Mallorca. Starting at a tiny port, home to no more than around 30 people, the only way is up.....unless you happen to have a boat that is!
Interestingly, Sa Calobra has adopted the name of its starting point and not its summit, which is the Coll dels Reis. A playground to many of the pros in their bid to find some winter warmth and form in the build up to the season, today we're pleased to be joined by none other than Fränk Schleck, whose palmarès includes top honours in the 2006 Amstel Gold, victory at the summit of the legendary Alpe d'Huez and third overall in the Tour de France. Having spent several training camps in Mallorca throughout his pro career Fränk knows the island well so we thought it would be interesting to get his take on the climb, along with a few pointers and climbing tips along the way.
Such is the popularity of this road in the main season it can get very busy with tourist coaches and cars (much like the whole of Mallorca) so if you're looking for a more peaceful experience of this beautiful Balearic island then we'd recommend keeping an eye on the forecast and heading there in December or January.
Just shy of 10 kilometres in length and with an average of 7.1% Sa Calobra may not have the raw numbers to rival the big climbs in the Pyrénées or Alps but that doesn't stop it being an icon in its own right, with over 50,000 riders clocking their times on Strava to date and the top dogs going well under 30 minutes to the summit! Gauntlet thrown down, challenge set. Will you add your name to the fabled serpentine slopes of Sa Calobra?
Start: Sa Calobra
Length: 9.4 km
Highest Point: 682m
Elevation gain: 682m
Max gradient: 11%
Average gradient: 7.1%
Ridden in January

Hello Mike, I am sitting in my home 5 days post double bypass surgery and this video pops up. I think it was about a year ago that I asked if you had any plans for filming in Mallorca. You said it's on your list. Well, it could not have come at a more appropriate time as it lifted my spirits and has me determined to come back quicker and stronger than before. Thank you for doing what you do it means more to me than you will ever know. Best, Larry

I did this descent and climb at the end of July 2017 and it was 39c with no wind in the middle of the day. I nearly melted and probably the hardest 75 mile ride I've ever done. Unforgettable experience though.

Cycled this two days after the Ironman Mallorca as I had wanted to do it in 2014 & 2015 and never got around to it. I cycled from Alcudia and I left in the early afternoon towards the end September I think. It was a mistake leaving so early as I had to cycle down, spend only 10 minutes down below and start cycling back up again to avoid the long cycle back to Alcudia in the dark. I was really happy I did it. I would definitely do it again. It is really some experience.

Great video. I've done Sa Calobra a few times over the last 15 years on visits to Mallorca. The most memorable was when there was a BMW motorbike rally going on. Must have been passed by at least 100 BMW motorbikes on the way up including a few with sidecars

Hi Mike, thanks a lot for a great video again. I wonder, isn't it still quite cold in Mallorca this time of the year? I've booked for April, as any earlier seemed too cold. How cold did it get at the top of the climbs? Was the video shot very recently or in January?
@TheColCollective
@TheColCollective 6 лет назад
The mornings are leg warmer chilly but on a good week it'll warm up quite nicely to around 15 degrees or so. At the top of the climbs in the middle of the day wasn't such an issue as they aren't that high. I shot this just a couple of weeks ago at the very end of January. We were bundled up as I had to ride out very early (before dawn) and the descent down to Sa Calobra is in the shade so that was very cold. By the top it was nice and warm again :-)
@yeti575lt
@yeti575lt 6 лет назад
I'm a local and can tell you that in april, if is not a rare rainy week, you'll be back home with great tan lines... But that global warming we never know... But you might know that april is maybe the bussiest cycling month of the year, so my advice is start riding as early as possible and enjoy!
@craiggreen4388

I was out there last week (14th feb) & we intended to do Sa Colobra but up in the mountains it was so cold, we thought it best not to. I gather whilst we were staying on the island the temperatures were unusually low. Still had some great rides though. I will return.
@eltribun

If you wanna ride the really HARDEST!!! climb on Mallorca, go try Puig de Sobremunt / Es Verger... not super long, but gradients.... but when it comes to spectacular climb & descent, , almost nothing compares to Sa calobra

Nice ride, is there literally no traffic?
@TheColCollective
@TheColCollective 6 лет назад
If you ride it out of season (December / January) then it's much quieter. Anything from about mid February onwards starts getting more busy, and the main season from March to September is super busy so if you go then it's best to get out there really early before the tourist buses start arriving. Hope that helps. Enjoy! Mike

Buses in those switchbacks? I am going there in April, is that something to worry about? I don't mind traffic on two wheels, but buses...
@fiddleronthebike
@fiddleronthebike 6 лет назад
it's not a real problem - of course the busses need the entire road when cornering, but you can see the switchbacks in front of you all the way up or down. And in general, the drivers in Mallorca are VERY considerate to cyclists. Go there, it's one of the most beautiful roads to ride I know!!!
@TheColCollective
@TheColCollective 6 лет назад
It's best to start as early in the day as possible, once the tourist buses start to hit the road (around 10.30am) the fun factor takes a considerable dive. Good luck! Mike

Add me to the list who would prefer no pros in favor more pros. I'd happily like to hear from Eddy Merckx, Peter Sagan, Emma Pooley, Katie Hall and Marianne Vos just to name a few who are in one category that the others are not in. I understand that Media 24 is media company, but I don't think David Millar or Andy Schleck have had much to add except their own plugs. Excellent channel.

Ha, ha. you are absolutely right. I'm a bit too young to remember that. But yes, amphetamines count and NO, I don't want to see Merckx here. How about some of the finishers of the Haute Route instead. Amateurs who are not the fastest but who have accomplished something remarkable.
