SA's fault for still buying it, it will only get more power and updates and become less overpriced when its sales starts dropping, but currently it's on top in sales, so Toyota ain't gonna do shit.
It’s quite disappointing that this video lacks the important details… The only difference the 4X4 systems would have in this race is the negligible disadvantage of their own dead weight, it’s not a full-time AWD system which means 4H should only be used on unsealed surfaces, all these bakkies should be running in 2H for this & you can also see evidence of this at 5:13 the green 4x4 indicator above the centre instrument display was not illuminated & again with the GR Sport right at the very end of the video 6:05 spinning its rear wheels. You should be clear on what configuration you are running the vehicles in, if you did actually run them in 4H you should specify that & also state that it’s not indicative of normal road use as the vehicles should actually be in 2H on sealed surfaces. If this was done on gravel with the 4X4 bakkies in 4H then the 4X2 Hilux would have fallen behind. It would have also been nice to see the good ol’ 4.0 V6 however, I know those are hard to find these days, you could have also had the 2.8 GD-6 manual with its reduced torque output compared to the auto as another comparison. The best rival comparison would be the Ford Ranger Tremor as this is the vehicle that the GR Hilux actually competes with. For everyone comparing it to the Raptor, put your guns away, the raptor is R200k+ more expensive than the GR Sport & in a different league, hopefully someday Toyota will make a full fat GR version that will compete directly with the Raptor, until then the Ranger Tremor is the actual competitor to the GR Sport. Having said all that, it would be nice to have both the Tremor & the Raptor in this race as well just to see what’s what.
awesome stuff guys. i believe Ash was right the true formula is definately stock standard. even if all had all terrain tyres if you can stretch the runway to maybe half mile or so the normal Legend will creap ahead. More power isnt always best answer..nice race. but do a chinese run now..LDV versus P Series versus JAC T9 versus JMC GRAND Avenue (if it arrives). That T9 looks good hey..i love the club cabs though this double cab thing is becoming boring 🤏
Since 2018 Toyota have been playing around the same bakkie changing here and there ,this time they went as far as introducing the legend ,gr another gr ant the wide body ,not forgetting the 48 v bakkie,it's a game of money making
I think if the standard Hilux was also 4WD it would've taken the GR. Can the race be done over but with all the bakkies in 4WD? Because I very much believe the standard Hilux will win
That's more weight on it and slower sprint at start up surely. If there was more ground in front, I think it would have covered up more distance on the GR sport.
i am interested to know if the 48V provides a benefit when driving in town at slower speeds . Does it provide power for 10-20KM reducing consumption . Cause then it would just make sense other than carrying a extra battery
The hybrid system on hilux is belt driven if i am not mistaken so it wont perform like a gear driven hybrid system. I might be wrong by saying the system on the hilux is belt driven but if i can recall on a review by AUS...its belt driven. Corrections are welcome.
When drag racing a 4x4 once you're off the line switch it back to 2H. Should be able to eek out a bit more on the top end due to less drive train loss. Or at least that's what I've heard 🤔
You’re only getting a 165kw for over R1 million? You might as well go for a Raptor & get 292kw. Or maybe just get the normal Hilux with close to the same power & engine for much less.
I like the GR Hilux, but I thought these bakkies including the Rangers are a lot faster than those quarter mile times. Because most of them are always moving faster than most cars. But those times are very very average.
I think this conversation can go both ways. The Raptor is faster, more updated and maybe even better looking than the Hilux. The Hilux has better reliability and a solid name behind it. I think it depends on what you want to get, but one of these probably suits you... I do however feel like Toyota needs to do a bit more for the price, that being said, I'll probably still buy the Hilux above the Raptor but that's just me 🤷♂️

3 year / 90000km maitenance plan and Toyota fans are singing the reliability song. Why is Toyota not making it 120000km like Ford, or are they not trusting their own product😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Too slow! Toyota better stop playing games and give us the F33A-FTV engine in the Hilux, Prado and Fortuner. That engine shouldn’t be exclusive to the 300 series especially when competitors like Ford Ranger/Everest have 3.0 TDI V6s.
Toyota bosses are hard headed they are extremely stubborn,they don't want to change according to times. Almost all their cars are boring and underpowered. Even Chinese does a better job than Toyota when it comes to interior design and power output. This is a great Bakkie but its let down by its 2006 dashboard design and its power as its underpowered. Toyota lost a lot of buyers to Ford and people didn't even think twice about Ford's unreliability issues. They chose power, comfortability and nice designs over a reliability of TOYOTA.
