In this video, we will be taking a look at a 2003 Saab 9-5 Linear(?) 2.0t. The issue we will be talking about here also applies to the 2.3t and 2.3Turbo engines. Basically the whole Trionic7 engine lineup.
High oil consumption on a turbocharged car is in many cases due to the oil seals on the turbocharger failing causing oil to enter either the exhaust housing (making a continues smoke show out the exhaust) or by entering the compressor side and collecting oil in the intercooler and boost/intake piping. This will usually cause thick blue-ish smoke from the exhaust while accelerating. This could also make the car misfire and run poorly.
A couple of days after recording this video, the car was back for a turbocharger replacement. The turbo was definitely defective as it had a damaged compressor wheel and lots of oil in the compressor housing.
Replaced the turbo with a known good unit, and the car is back and running strong.
Remember to replace oil and filter while doing a turbo replacement.
Use ONLY Saab specific oil. Either GM-LL-A-025 or Dexos2 quality requirement. Saab recommends Mobil1, but you can use anything you like as long it fulfils the quality requirement mentioned above. 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30, or 5w-40 depending on mileage and climate. Replace oil every 10.000km/6000miles or every year whatever comes first. This is not a Saab recommendation but more of a general recommendation.
