If you have broken coils, rusted, noise from either bump stops or you just switching to shorter coils, this is the easiest way to do it.
However watch where you hands go and watch for the screw-jack not to slip.
In addition, dont do it this way, and instead remove the complete control arm if your inner bushing is new, this method works fine with old bushings.
Torque specs:
Control arm outer bolt (use new bolt or use your brain): 75nm +90 degree or 55lbft +90 degree
Lug bolts: 110nm or 81lbft

good idea w the jack i usually push the arm down with my foot and shove the springs in by hand. always a fun job but surprisingly easy like most saab work.

About to change shock absorbers and springs on mine. Was worried about how to deal with the springs in a proper and safe way without buying the presstool Haynes suggest. Didn't look too hard without it. Thanks for sharing! :)

Definitely, don't go to the Haynes manual for this job! The Haynes method offered wasn't possible for me, so I figured out this was the best route. Did you lower your suspension? I've gone back to stock ride height on account of my Bilstein B6 shocks installation. These were essentially hydraulically bottomed out with H&R's lowering springs. I now prefer my stock ride height as my 9-3 is also my winter driver.

Thanks for the comment .. im sticking with Stock ride height ..

If it's possible, in order to remove the spring, it's better to use a spring compressor before to take out the bolt and then the spring

I hate spring compressors for how dangerous they are .. if u r comfortable with, then go ahead

I have some clunking noises coming from back of car, could it be worn spring pads? I've replaced upper shock mounts recently.
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 4 года назад
Thats one possibility if they are worn out and the spring is touching the control arm

My car is lowered - I'd like to get it back to original. I have the original springs but should shock absorbers also be replaced with...some longer ones? Total newbie here. Thanks

Depend on what shocks u have installed, but usually shocks have minor effect on ride height .. worth just putting the stock springs and see how it goes

Nice job is it easy to change the lower arm bushing?

Lower rear or front ? The front is easy, the rear moderate job.

Does using the scissor Jack put stress on the lower arm?
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 5 лет назад
Yes it does, just a tinny bit, nthn major and it will not cause any damage ..
@kakashi99908
@kakashi99908 5 лет назад
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY okay thanks how would you compare this method with removing the control arm bolts and using a floor jack on it instead.
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 5 лет назад
Duck u don’t have to do that, just mark the orientation of the inner cam bolt and then loosen it a bit, then remove the outer bolt while supporting the arm with a jack, this will put no stress on the bushing. Always remember the inner cam bolt is part of the wheel alignment mechanism, although u can get it back close to original orientation but u cant guarantee perfect alignment .
@kakashi99908

@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Which one is the inner cam bolt that you don't need to take out Is it the one at the end of the shock?
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 5 лет назад
Duck the control arm has two bolts, one connects to the knuckle (outer) and one connects to the subframe (inner)

@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Yes - that's the process for the OG 9-3 isn't it? Took mine off to replace the upper bump stops but a bit nervous of the effects if any on the anti roll bar on the rear axle when you have to force it down with the scissor jack. & the damn shock bolt took 20 minutes to get back in! Like youI don't want to use compressors if possible I'll give it another go in the spring (no pun intended!) Great videos though - thanks ; )

If you were replacing the coil over springs do you need to replace the lower control arm as well since you’re prying at it? Also where does the top of the spring go?
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 5 лет назад
Brandon Lukaszewski no need to replace the control arm as long as it is not noisy, cracked or u have alignment issue. Top of the spring !! Dont know what u mean
