The J 35 Draken looks like a bat out of hell or something straight from a sci-fi movie - I just love it! The J 37 Viggen is another of my favourites; Years ago it paved way for the now so popular canard-equipped interceptors. It looked truly futuristic and generally weird back in the early 1970s.
It is quite commendable how well Sweden has done in the aerospace field on their relative own, and yes barely 10 million people! It's only somewhat depressing that I think the Swedish aircraft industry has taken a bit of a down turn since the cold war is over, and the need for high performance military aircraft isn't as high as it used to be. For all we know the Gripen might be the last manned fighter ever built in Sweden, but I'm hoping it's produced for export for years from now.
F-86: start 1944 first flight 1947. config: low-wing, simple 35deg sweep, axial-flow engine, tail on fuselage and long jetpipe inside, all-flying tail. J-29: start 1945 first flight 1948. config: shoulder-wing, compound 25 deg sweep, radial-flow engine, tail-boom, no jetpipe. conventional stabilisator tail. If you pay attention, you'll see they're rather different, and that the dates makes it impossible anyway.
J35: start 1949, concept prototype first flight 1952, first flight 1955. config: mid-wing, double-delta. Mirage: start 1952, first flight of final design 1958, config: low-wing, simple delta. SAAB J35 had substantially superior airfield performance, more advanced systems, higher climbrate, better ceiling, lower wingloading, better turnrate. All on similar range. J35 was a heavier, more ambitious aircraft for a more ambitious, stronger airforce (+500 J35). (France ~270 Mirage III).
i see, i really didn't know that, i wanna go to sweden someday, i hear there some really nice places to visit:) atleast not to crowded then i supose:P:)
Yeah, Swedens landmass is about ten times bigger than the Netherlands, but the population is really spread out.. In the northern parts of Sweden, there can be hundreds of kilometers between villages.
@trippletrain77 0:02 Saab 29 Tunnan 0:06 Saab 32 Lansen 0:09 Saab 35 Draken 0:32 Unknown 1:01 Saab 37 Viggen . These are 100% made swedish planes! ( not computers etc )
För ett år sedan? Då är det mer än jag vet. Dom letade ju efter någon gammal att renovera för några år sedan. men påstod att det skulle kosta för mycket att bygga ett ifrån grunden i princip! Är du säker på att det var en B-18?
J22 or whatever it's called I believe has been cancelled...very expensive and the makers know they can charge anything but this time they went too far...thanks :)
@Airbuzz u mean 9 million peopel in whole sweden? i tought sweden was a pretty big country compared to holland and we got 17 million i think im not sure though
@trippletrain77 All fighter jets looks the same nearly. In that case the f86 copied the MiG-9s design and the F-4 copied MiG-21s design. I guess you get the point ;)
Sweden waged almost constant war for 400 years. During a 100 year period, 'killed-in-war' accounted for 75% of all death causes for males, any age. After that there was poverty and difficulty of producing food. Resulting in exodus to America. Not quite the proportions of Ireland, but there is still almost twice as many swedish descendants in US as in Sweden. Sweden's economic and technical success in late 1900's, is more due to escaping WW2 than population.
