“You have been warned” - but warned about what?? If your car is locked, the remote doesn’t work and the key won’t unlock the door, that’s TROUBLE. You are LOCKED OUT and you will have no option but to smash a window to get in AND will have to get someone with Tech2 out to the car to replace the CIM and program a new key. Likely cost around £1000 or so. Of course, if you keep a spare remote/key and check it’s operation regularly, that will save you from the above hassle and expense. Do not fall into the trap of thinking I’m being overdramatic for effect. Over the last 4-5 years I’ve been active on Saab forums, I’ve seen this happen to a few people. The best defense: keep a WORKING spare.
Cyclone Cyd Boy don’t I know how true that is. I had a 9.3 estate, lost the only key, found that price for the replacement work n thought, no way the cars not worth that so, yes hey Mr scrap man come n fetch, upside was at least I got £200 for it.🤔🤔😪
What happens if the battery dies will I still be able to drive the car my key fob turns the car on but the buttons don’t work it doesn’t lock or unlock the car does that mean it needs a new battery
When we were locked out of our 9-3 wagon I used a length of wire coat-hanger (bent into a hook at the end) to go between the door and the seal, hooked under the door lock, and popped it upward to let me in. It took a while, and I may have said a few swear words during the process, but it worked and there were no ill effects noted to door, window, or lock thereafter.
Read your owners manual. Use the metal emergency key to unlock the door in case the car or remote battery is dead. no need to smash windows. None of this will help if your key is not recognised though
I thought that too until I realized that inside my key fob there’s a little button on the back of it and it just looks like a little emblem it’s a circle you push it it opens up the case and inside of it is the actual key that you can use to unlock the car door depending on your alarm it might be tricky but if your battery is dead your alarm obviously won’t work anyway
I just changed my battery, the changed key can still lock and unlock the car but won't turn in the slot to start the engine, while the spare does just fine. Any idea why?
If the key isn't recognised, have you tried the resynch process? If that doesn't work, it's likely to be the ISM (ignition switch module). Removing, cleaning and reinstalling often does the trick.
Here you go: case with key blade and optional switches: bit.ly/Saab_Key_Case add on key blade cutting service: bit.ly/Key_cut_service PCB only (if you need): bit.ly/Saab_PCB
Have a 2008 Aero 93. Thanks for the great video! Replaced the battery without a hitch. My driver-side door wont lock or unlock. Process works fine with all other doors. Any suggestions? Thanks again!
Hi just thought I'd let you know that the key cutting service is no longer available. Thanks for all your help, my go to for trying to keep my Saab 93 aero going 😅
I did everything wrong , i should have watched your video first , now iam locked out ,,, changed the battery , tried it out it unlocked and then locked and then nothing anymore , wont open the door , manual key wont work either ,i cleaned everything in the fob , still wont open ,,,,,, what now ,, HELP
How do I do this with a fob that has metal key attached? Bought a new fob, but not having mechanic synchronized as it would have to be left overnight and it's about 1 hr away. Tried using it as described and now in USA 2005 9 5 not able to get it to work.
Not gonna blow smoke up your ass here, I'm not familiar with that unit. Seek out Saab Nuts! on Facebook and ask there. 16,000 odd members worldwide - there'll be someone can help you out. Please do let us know how you get on.
Hi, I am buy a 2008 Saab but the metal key is missing, where can I buy one and have it cut since I don't have the original, any Ideas would be greatly appreciated
When i put my key ino my sav 93 linear. It says key not accepted take to dealer. It will still lock and unlock off buttons. But it will not turn in ignition. Please help
Have you tried resynching it? OR it could be the ISM (ignition switch module). You can take them apart and clean them up, or replace with one from a junker. They are plug n play
I just bought a Saab 93 yesterday. And today I cannot open the car anymore! Remote it’s not working and nor the physical key! It’ an electrical issue or he give me the wrong key? The normal key are supposed to open the door mechanically. The previous owner told me that’s a car battery issue... How I can open the car?
what do you mean by the physical key not working? Is the barrel seized and won't turn or the key won't go in? I presume you've tried both remotes and both keys? DO NOT try changing the battery in the remote. IF it is a car battery issue (I'm assuming you mean the battery is flat) then you're gonna have to get the front centre grille off to open the bonnet latches and apply a booster battery. The car should not lose synch through a flat battery (or disconnected battery)
Thanks a lot for the reply! It seems that I did a big mistake buying this car! I bought it in Qatar from a turkish guy. He gave me only one key and I didn’t tried the metal key also... When the remote was off I tried the normal one which went all the way in but I couldn’t turn it left or right. The previous owner started to tell me a lot of lies... I managed to open the door opening first the engine hood. And now the remote control works properly. But the key not! I’m afraid that I have to change the whole system... There are no Saab representative or garage here in Doha...
Gabriel Niculescu Ah, right oh. if the remote is now working okay, do not try changing the battery in the remote. So, is there no Saab, Vauxhall, Opel, Chevrolet or other GM Group dealer anywhere near you?? Don't give up yet!!
Thanks for all of your advice so far. I removed the ISM and took it apart. It was very clean on the inside but I cleaned it anyway. I connected it back to my car and left it loose {outside the console}. I am getting a bell when I first put the fob into the ignition, but then I get both the "steering wheel malfunction" and "key not recognized" messages. I tried jamming the locking spring on the back of the SIM and was able to turn the key, but got the same messages again. I heard the fuel pump kick on the first time, but when I tried it again, I couldn't hear it come on again. I removed the starter relay from the box, jumped it with needle nose pliers, and I got the car to turn over but not start. The ABS module is hooked up properly but I've had problems with it in the past and used your tip to bypass it. Do you think I should try that again? If it is the CIM is there any way to get around it and get the damn car to start and run? It's a really nice '06 9 3 Aero convertible but I don't have a lot of $$$ right now, and I don't feel like playing guessing games...Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...BTY, I replaced the 5-year-old car battery {$220.00} to no avail. I do not have or know anyone with a Tech2. Thanks again!
Key case: bit.ly/Saab_Key_Case add-on cutting service for key blade: bit.ly/Key_cut_service I ordered a second case and a cut key. the cut key worked fine.
I do not have a duplicate key for my Saab. I have a B style Saab key that unlocks the doors and I just now ordered a new fob. I would like to get a duplicate key. I did take pictures of my key Can you advise? Thank you
So can I buy the whole key fob casing and the chip copy the key at a batteries plus and then plug the key fob in like you had done and it will program?
Well the bottons on the remote do not work at all but it still starts my car it’s the original key/chip and I’m REALLY trying to avoid 500$ for a new one!
So i recently replaced the case on my key, and whenever i insert it, I hear the wheel unlock but it will not allow me to turn the key to the on position with the replacement case. Only with the original. Is there a way to fix this? I looked at the case and the dimensions seem to be just perfect.
I get this quite frequently. I just withdraw the key and try again. I'd suspect it's more likely a problem with the ignition key module. They're a regular failure point with message "key not recognised".
Hello Cyd, i have a 55 plate 93 with only one key. I`m scared that I will misplace it and be left walking. How can i get and reprograme an extra key as a spare. thank you in advance.
There are plenty of Saab independents in most countries who can supply and program a new remote with key. Try joining Saab Nuts! on Facebook and asking there. It's a global UK based group, bound to be someone from your territory.
I have a problem in my Saab 93 2004 with the key that it starts the car perfectly, but the buttons do not work when I press them all the buttons I changed the battery and checked the switch in the shop he told me that it gives a signal that works well but the buttons do not work I don’t know why Although the buttons are new and also the spare key, the same problem please help my ?
What do you do is the key is no longer working on the door? And the fob doesn’t work with a new battery? The car starts with key but I can’t lock the door.
Great video. I've just arranged to buy my first Saab. A 2010 9-3 1.9 TiD estate. It's low mileage and overall in great condition... Apart from the key fobs! I'm not sure what they're made out of but they look awful! Reassuring to know I can replace them without it being too costly. Subscribed!
You mentioned something about a link with a vendor that I can send a picture of my key and have them cut it for me{?} What is the link for the new key fob case and key, thanks.
Links in the description. They've stopped advertising the key cutting, so send them a message to ask if they will still do it. If people ask, they may reinstate the listing
Good Video Have just bought an 05 9-3 and the key fobs have pretty much haddit. The link is in swedish for the one you recommended. Cant seem to switch it english, any ideas.
Thanks for this, I've bought a couple of crap quality ones that don't snap back together. And the key cutting service will be getting tried asap. Thanks for the links.
Hello.... I did the same thing.....but the remote control does not work.....the car starts.... On screen says" remote control battery low" I try 3 differnt new batteries but still not working... Any ideas? Thank you for your videos!!!
Try cleaning the battery and the battery connections on the board with contact cleaner or an alcohol wipe. What brands have you tried and were they in date?
@@CycloneCyd also The key it came with one Batery plus 4 micro switch... as it says, which i have No idea what is that?? "2PCS 4 Buttons Car Replacement Black Remote Key Fob Control Shell Case with Micro Switch Battery for SAAB 9-3"

This was a life saver this morning . Decided to replace my battery last night on my 2005 93 , I've never jumped in the car so fast at 6am so I didnt wake the neighbour's !
That's a problem with the mechanism inside the CIM. I'm sure it can be dismantled and sorted. I'd do a video, but the problem is everyone wants mega money for a CIM.
For future comment readers, make sure your headlight switch is turned on! On my left hand drive/USA car, this switch is to the left of the steering wheel where you find your fog light buttons. Every time I bring my car to the mechanic, they turn the headlight knob to 0, which doesn't allow the high beam switch to stay in the on position. You, the daily driver, don't normally mess with this knob because of the daytime running lights, but it's possible someone else did.
I changed the battery a couple of months ago and only really had theoretical issues in the back of my mind of it being an issue. I made sure that I went straight away to the car and started it. I do need to change the cases on both keys though, as the rubber is starting to degrade, and have watched another vid of yours so thanks for the info and a long life to all the Saabs that are still on the road.
Thanks my friend that was awesome. Replaced two keys... the worn front part only. The bit with the blue Saab badge was worn but fine. Only a problem when the little pressure pads actually fell off the other side. Dx
No, if you buy a new key it needs programmed to the car with Tech2. Whenever we go on any kind of trip, I make sure my wife has a spare in her handbag (I've got 3 keys, so there's one at home too). I try to rotate them round too, so they all get 'regular' use Maybe I just 'know' too much, lol. I co-engineered the remote and key system for New Range Rover 38A.
Yeah, a lot of people jump to the same conclusion - garages included. Ends up costing unnecessary money. It's a similar thing to the ABS light on Polo (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v9L2RXXtbXI.html)
Hi Cyd, i need help with my saab 9-3 04 i got Check Engine Light and P1312 code O2S. Switch point Rich senson 1, do you know what i need to check ??, coil packs, spark plugs gap, ionization module, O2 Sensor or something else? i want my saab fine again it loses power on full throttle and the Turbo gauge goes down when reach the last white line, it doesn't pass to red lines, yesterday i start the car and the engine sounds very strange, like a steam motor and it has no power to drive uphill.
Hi there! I keep getting a “remote control battery- replace battery” message. I have replaced the battery twice, resynched the key, but the message still keeps appearing. Any suggestions?
@@CycloneCyd I have the same issue too! Tried clearing but it goes to next menu. Replaced the battery. Still says it's low. Replace battery. And the lock will not work. It starts car perfectly fine. What can I do to fix it?
Hi question only have one key for my 2003 Saab 9-3 convertible a friend gave me a set of keys from a 2006 95 aero can i cut new keys and then get the transmitter program for my car the transmitter part # 5265335 are the same
Technically, yes you can, but you need someone to 'empty' the programs in the keys so they are like virgin ones. You'll be lucky if you can find someone to do that. Otherwise, you need new virgin keys and tech 2.
@@CycloneCyd Thanks for the info you’re my go to guy for information i know a Original Saab Service tech he’s the one who service my cars transmission he had told me i need a spare key just got this set of keys just didn’t ask him if i could use that transmitter I’ll give him a call thanks a lot
Hi Cyd, this morning both of my fobs to my 2004 Saab were not working. I did take your advice and used the manual key to open my driver’s door without any difficulty but I did wake all the neighbors when the alarm started blasting. I did put the fob as quickly as possible into the ignition, and it did start up just fine. (I also replaced both fobs with new batteries). I then tried once again to use the fob to lock the door but to no avail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I have a Saab 9-5 and i just changed my battery on my keys and my key buttons started working for 1 day, and now again when i click on the buttons on the key nothing happens. What do i do?
Try re-synching it again. Check the battery is clean, maybe change it again, it's important not to get grese off your fingers onto the cells as it can short hem and drain them. If the car is giving message about key not recognised it is likley the ISM
Excellent video Cyd. I’m wondering why my automatic window opening no longer works from my key fob. I have a poor driver side central locking actuator which usually doesn’t open the door with the central locking. I used to get past this by holding down the unlock button which would drop the windows at the front but this feature has suddenly disappeared!!
@@amberjohnson7169 Yes, go for it! Since I made this, I have ordered another and this time used the key cutting service. The key I received works perfectly. Only 4 quid for the key cutting and my local locksmiths wanted 15, so well worth it !!
👍👍 now you've got a new case, you'll want to keep it nice. I've found a really nice leather fob case made especially for the Saab. I'll be doing a video on it soon with a review. I've only just recieved it so haven't used it yet, but here's a sneak preview bit.ly/Saab_fob_case
NO, if you want another key (and you should have at least two), you MUST have at least one working key and you need someone with Tech2 to program the second key in. Also ask them to make sure there are no other keys programmed to the car. Where in the world are you?
That's dedication Cyd, starting the video on holiday. Were u bored 🤣. Only joking mate, another useful video on how to on my Saab. Cheers mate keep up the good work 👍 PS.. Still waiting for u to upload a video on changing ignition coils on V6, especially the 3 back ones... Nightmare job
So if one door latch has failed, not the door switch but latch.. would that stop me from locking the car or unlock ? My problem started intermittently my twice is dry, ignition barrel pop up good becasuse my key diffrent from yours with the blade., fob works boot 99% , iv looked at door wire harnes and plugs cleaned them up. And ive disconnected battery.i used to be able to lock the doors with key then enter car manual set alarm off and insert key and turn. I bought one key case with key blade from eBay and it fits perfectly with original circuit board as well as the key, I also removed the Saab emblems from the old key case to the new one ..... cost me less than US$8- with FREE shipping ! Anyway, thanks for showing this .... !
Hello Cyd, thank you for your very helpful videos. I wonder if I might be able to ask for some guidance on Toyota Aygo 05, if so should I email you. I will source finest coffee beans in leu of your thoughts.
That's the point behind the pinned comment above. You'd be stuffed and in for a huge bill to get your car back up and running. This is why it is SO VITAL to ensure you have a spare working key at all times and always get your passenger to carry it with them if you go more than a few miles from home. Personally, I have three keys and carry one in my laptop bag to work every day and my Wife has the other in her handbag at all times. NO, you cannot use another key from another Saab
Thanks Cyd, another great video, it seems every time I want to do something on my car you've made a video to show us how to do it! You've really been a godsend during the restoration of my 2005 Saab 93 convertible! Keep the amazing videos coming! 👍 😃
Do you know if there are schematics for these keys available? I have two of them, the only two programmed, that have broken buttons on them. I was going to see if I could get new buttons micro soldered onto those boards before replacing the key housing / batteries
Schematics? Not sure what you mean by that. However, yes you can replace the switches. The case and key I linked in the description can be bought with 4x new switches. There are loads of videos on how to solder new switches onto PCBs. It isn't difficult.
@@CycloneCyd Schematics as in the electrical diagram of the PCB board itself. I wanted to order the buttons that are soldered onto the board if I could find the part number for them... I suppose I could poach them off of the board that comes with the replacement fob.... I'm not trusting myself to do it though, I know a guy with quite the soldering set up, I think I'll bring it to him so I don't fry it and have to reprogram everything $$$. Thanks so much for the video! I think many Saab owners are facing this problem these days, a timely upload indeed. Best regards
Wow...great video thanks! My daughter has a 2005 Saab 9-3 Arc convertible and the key is basically deteriorating and is turning into a gooey mess. We're getting a message to replace the battery in the fob and it basically is falling out. I need to get a second key pronto!

@@CycloneCyd Hi! Great group, but no answers yet regarding the new fob. I found a place about 1.5 hrs away that will give me a new programmed key fob for $300. It's in Philadelphia. Does that seem reasonable? Thanks!
Cyclone Cyd Hi. Through Saab Nuts someone mentioned Orio and I was able to find a garage not far from work that specializes in Saab. I got one fob through them and another through a GM dealer. Had to wait 3weeks for the fob through GM though. Now have two new working keys! Thanks for your help. I used Union Line Garage in Pennington, NJ for programming. They also just completed a ton of work on the car. Hope this car lasts!
As from what I see in the comments and video, this key fob is nothing near the good quality. Then You stick your key back to the fob, I can see a gap in between them. That is one poor quality replacement key fob! And that's the reason why someone of You can't properly turn the key in the car.

Hi Cyd, I got the warning on the dash that the remote's battery was low, so I changed the battery. Then the fob's buttons stopped working but it starts the car normally.
