Palms are looking great Sandor! It’s supposed to be an El Niño winter here in Buffalo, so maybe this is a good winter to try… since Ontario is relatively close. My unoffered advice is the needle palm, if you try and protect it with snow, will almost definitely spear pull. Sabal minor seems to take protection with snow much better.

Hey my friend and yes shaping up to be mild winter for us! When I lived in Toronto there were many years I did not protect any of my needle or minor palms except for whatever snow we received. One year I did however loose one of my needles when we received an arctic blast and it never recovered. The minors faired alot better and recovered so your right on point. Those were the early years of experimenting for me so I learned alot. Good luck with your palms and nice chatting again 👍😁

Hi Sandor, How have you been?? We had far too much rain over a fortnight. Garden is in a huge mess. I love your garden decor. The stones are very decorative. Have a wonderful week. ❤

Hey Janice! I've been great but busy and thanks for asking. Sorry to hear about your garden and I believe your in the monsoon season right now. I guess we're lucky in my region of Canada because even though we do get sever weather time to time it's not as bad as some places around the world like your weather. Be safe and thanks again for your support 👍😁

Great specimens man. I have a needle palm and a palmetto. So slow growing here. No chance of them being killed by the winter but equally no chance of them growing in our crappy summers 😂

Great to see those palms thrivng! Do you bring a lot of your species indoors for the winter, or leave them planted and try to protect them outside?
@sandorspalms
@sandorspalms 9 месяцев назад
Hey my friend! Yes I do bring a few indoors but most I protect outdoors. Here is a video on how I protect my plants during the winter if your interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--XwKK3OFJ_Y.htmlsi=JH2vK4FAeX7K8IZI

Looks great! Do you know anyone who sells the coldest hardy varieties like McCurtain for minors or the Alabama variety needles here in Canada?
@sandorspalms
@sandorspalms Год назад
I've been trying to source some McCurtain county minors myself without any luck. I get the majority of my palms from Niagara tropics in Burlington. Dan who runs it is a great source and very reliable if you need any cold hardy palms. The only drawback is that the palms come from Florida. Hope your summer is going well my friend and I appreciate the watch!

Hey Sandor,your sabal minors look awesome.Do you overwinter them like you do with the trachys? I have 2 sabal minors in ground for about 3 years now,but every spring (including this spring) when I uncover them,the fronds always look dried out or something and I end up trimming them and I'm left with just the new growth.Any idea how I can fix this?
@sandorspalms
@sandorspalms 5 месяцев назад
Hey Pawel! Yes I protect it similar to my Trachycarpus. I'm in zone 6a so I do need protection most winters otherwise mine will look like yours. Thanks for watching and hopefully I could help!

Zandor! Sabal minor holds up better then Needle palm. It will return unlike neddle can die outright in the teens.
@sandorspalms
@sandorspalms Год назад
Hey JT! Yes it's true that some minors hold up better then needle in severe cold but I have also seen some minor perish whereas needle push through so needless to say both are built for the cold and my guess would be the eco type of both palms also play into their hardiness at the end of the day. Thanks for watching!
@JT-ok6re

@@sandorspalms I live in zone 7A Virginia! We had a temperature drop all the way to below zero degrees fahrenheit. My needle palm die, but the babies survive and took their mothers place. Now 4 feet tall with their own babies. All of my Sabal minors including my Sabal Louisiana which is trunking now survived. The only one that died is the Sabal minor Tamaulipas which is a Mexico eco type that I loved, and want to try again. That has been my trials with palms, and I have actually lost three needle palms too cold. Maybe it's because I live in such a rural area where there's no radiation to heat to keep it warmer.
