"I'm going to let this play out, I hope that's alright with you." My friend, had you skipped the credits, you'd have had a riot on your hands with full-on pitchforks and torches. One does not simply skip Floor Jansen's outro vocals.

The outro was sung by Floor Jansen, of Nightwish. The wife of Sabaton drummer Hannes van Dahl. They guy who got blown up by the grenade in the beginning. Hannes .

That beginning piano part that is repeating motif is a variation on Carol of the Bells, That's why you've heard it before. It works really well. Excellent reaction Glad you got around to check in this one out. It's actually Floor Jansen at the end there singing. As I'm sure you know she is the singer for Nightwish and she's married to sabaton's drummer Hannes Van Dahl

There were repercussions after what happened here. Some of the soldiers refused to fight the ones they met on that no man's land. They were moved to other places along the frontline and some were courtmarshalled. The beauty of Sabaton is the fact that they don't take sides. They're empathic towards both sides.

A friend of mine was a soldier in the Wehrmacht in WWII. He wasn't a Nazi, in fact he spent time in work camp for resistance to nazis, but in the end even he was drafted. He was stationed at a new place when suddenly in came several Americans with wine and guitar. Everyone was incredibly surprised, but it turned out that the former German troop had befriended the Americans when they were stationed there. No one wanted to fight the other, so instead they met up to trade pictures of family, play card and teach each other songs. Sad to say, my friends officer was one who went by the book and the Americans became prisoners of war. My friend survived the war, spent two year in US concentration camp and then became a pacifist, dedicating his free time to the peace movement where I met him. He's dead now. Still miss him.

the tune on the piano is carol of the bells (with some variation/change to it that I can't remember) also, the one singing in the credit was Floor Jansen from Nightwish who is married to the drummer of Sabaton Hannes Van Dahl.

The video is like a movie because it was made by people who usually make movies. When the world shut down, moviemaking stopped as well, so they had time for this. You're right, the officers and higher ups were pissed. They threatened the troops with punishment in future years if it ever happened again, including execution.

The music of Carol Of The Bells is from an older Ukrainian folk song about a sparrow telling a farmer that two lambs have been born. More like a springtime song. Great video from Sabaton and great reaction from you.

The piano refrain is an inversion of the Christmas Bells, which is why it sounds so familiar, The Christmas Truce actually happened in 1914 along about 20 miles of the front line, many of the soldiers on both sides could not resume fighting after Christmas day, they were replaced within 3 days, some were treat as deserters. after this single event the orders went out that if it ever happened again they would all be shot as triators, I believe that order applied to both sides. I still find myself moved everytime I hear this song it is so powerful and brilliantly done, the production values were as good as any was movie I am pleased you let it play out as Floors vocal at the end is very moving as well
@Killermcknight
@Killermcknight Год назад
Bill, it's good to see you. I had no idea that was Floor at the end but I should have known :( I knew she was married to Hannes every video I've done on Sabaton or Nightwish people tell me that. I agree the video production was incredible and such a powerful chorus.

I went down late in the day on the 24th, struck in the engine I could not press on. My crate nosed over into shell hole, I came to much later. I could do nothing but hide, the madness of no-mans land reigns terror on those caught in it. Darkness fell, and an eternity lay before me as I plotted my way out. But something happened that night, a soul deafening silence fell upon the front, followed soon by a single voice in song. Not believing what I was hearing, I peered over the mangled wings covering my hole. I saw a single man, standing above the trenches, hands behind his back, singing as though his humanity depended on it. It filled me with a chill the night and snow could not give. Then more of his comrades stood to join him, and they walked onward, slowly and un-armed. I heard a heavy Scottish voice say; "Are ye a'right lad?". A highlander with his pipes was standing aside my hole, his hand extended. Without a thought, I responded: "Shaken, but not dead." "It's Christmas, Lad. C'mon." I stood, and took his hand for help from the hole. Around me I saw what could be described as a wonderous occasion. Men of all sides stood in the desolation, talking in what tongues they knew as though there was no war. There was no hate, no blood, no malice, only cordial respect and humanity. I wondered then, what we were fighting these men for. It struck me then, that each of us had a job to do, but tonight we all refused to do that job and simply be human. The voices rose again in song, and the piper played as we walked to the gathering. I couldn't help but feel that there was hope for us afterall, that we are all the same, no matter our uniforms, our rifles, or our futures. Tonight is Christmas, tonight we sing. -Manfred von Schreiber.

The piano entrance is the reverse of carols of the bells. To me this song already became a christmas classic. It is such a strong song, the lyrics, the instrumentation, the way Joakim is singing it with his heart and soul. And the video does the rest. It is brilliant. The guitarist of Sabaton Tommy Johansson, who is by the way an amazing singer did a cover of this a few days ago. He interpreted somewhat different but as brilliantly in his magnificently Tommy style absolutely worth listening too. So maybe you would like to check it out.. Thank you for this great reaction on this one.
@fnglert
@fnglert Год назад
I don't think it's the reverse of carol~ .. Sounds to me just that they lowered the first note by one octave. You can hear it after the piano blows up, he plays the riff a few times, the last two times he played that first of four notes an octave higher, and it's the proper Carol~ melody.
@kaelynshea5533
@kaelynshea5533 Год назад
@@fnglert it is the Carol of the bells. Joakim, the singer said so himself. They reverse it into minor to give it this gloomy sound
@digitalspecter
@digitalspecter Год назад
@@kaelynshea5533 Carol of the bells is already in minor (usually G minor). Here they play is in A minor I think. Normally the melody would then go C-B-C-A but here they play E-B-C-A.. So it's just a variation.

I watched your intro and final thoughts but not the video. I've watched 3 videos since BABYMETAL signed to open for them. I didn't like them. The songs are like a reading from wiki but the videos try to make war look cool. What kind of fans do they attract and what are their political beliefs? I worry about BABYMETAL ending up in an arena full of white supremacists.

Sabaton - Flanders field will change your mind, but really they do NOT glorify war or make it look cool. They sing about historical events to remind people of the tragedies, the sad, the forgotten, the good of history I’m bad at explaining but they are not making it appear that way. Maybe you’re trying to push the view. They are just a Swedish band wanting to sing about history and helped so many learn new history facts and stories. This song is about ww1 and the Christmas truce a beautifully yet heartbreaking tale of a real event

Sabaton does not involve itself with politics. They tell historically accurate stories about military history, period. If you see anything else in their music, it's whatever preconceptions you brought.

Sabaton is a band from Sweden and they sing about history. Sure, it's mostly military history but history none the less. They take no sides they tell the stories as they happened. They research each and every topic that they sing about. They do not glorify war or make it cool as you said. They tell the stories of real people, real events, real heroes. War is war but what we can do is learn from them so we don't make those same mistakes that lead to wars. They are also really nice guys and have their own history channel so everyone can learn about the backstories about their songs... So far I've been to one of their shows but that was certainly not the last. There were all kinds of people... Young, old, men, women and even children from a lot of countries. No white supremacists just people who are interested in history and love a good show.

I take you don't listen to many lyrics otherwise I would love to hear your opinion of a lot of misogynistic, foul-mouthed rubbish which originates in the city where you presumable live.
