On November 30, 1718, Charles XII of Sweden was killed by a piece of metal that pierced his left temple during the siege of Fredriksten. The circumstances of his death are still unclear to this day. The circumstances actually aren’t unclear anymore. A university in Finland figured out it was the enemy who killed him. They did this by doing tests on a ballistics dummy and determined that it couldn’t have been a friendly from close range and that it was a piece of grapeshot that killed him.
"For their honor. For their glory. For the men who fought and bled. A soldier from Sweden remembers the dead". Can't help but be moved to tears. The sheer passion and power contained in those lyrics are incredible.
Joakim has a certain passion and energy in his voice that is REALLY hard to match despite best efforts. It's really noticeable when you listen to certain covers of Sabaton songs - they're not bad by any means, but Joakim brings a particular energy to the way he sings it elevates the art.
With the beginning of October I started my Scandinavian studies at one of Polish universities. In a month me and my friend have to present one topic for the subject called 'History of Nordic Region' and we instantly chose 'Reign of Charles XII, the King of Sweden in Sabaton's songs'. It moves me. Thank you.
The best thing about the songs is the historical context. As an American, I wish we would study European history a bit more. Lots of cool legends and figures to study.
I think my history teachers in middle and high schools did the right thing and encouraged me to read more about history other than what was in the school books.
In American schools we are taught really about three things. WW2 the most then the Civil war from the side of the Union and the civil rights movement. That’s it. Forget Europe they don’t even bring up WW1 or Vietnam. Even the Revolutionary war is glossed over.
As a Texas man I vibe with this. We get “ww 1 happened, we used nukes and d day is kinda cool ig, we didn’t like being a colony, states rights states rights states rights states rights god save Texas. Like srsly, **** off with that. We don’t even get to know about our own heroes, Sam Houston aside. Not even Murphy
@@mshat18 It's a pity that American schools have so little History program. I'm Italian and in school my History teachers explained ( sadly only a few things) about the American Revolution, American Civil War, and mentioned the entrance of USA in WW1. Well, about World War 2 all of us know what the US militay did , both in Europe and the pacific theater
Sabaton once again displaying their ability to make thousands of people patriotic for countries they've never been to, and make us miss people that were dead before any of us where born.
@@dorozi8202 no. I am not him, but I know he wasn’t since the current royal family isn’t the same and no other royal titles exist in Sweden. Our current royal family (Bernadotte) is the one that replaced Karl XIIs family (Vasa). Since the two have no history aside from the replacement (and Bernadotte is an originally French family. Also, aside from possible illegitimate children the Vasa family no longer exists. The family was on the verge of death over and over as everyone kept having only one child (except Gustav, the first of them all, who had 14. Unfortunately, the three men killed each other and the women didn’t give birth to more than 3 children who in turn had no children). Happens when you’re constantly leading armies from age 16 to 40 (not just Karl XII, his father, his grandfather, his great grandfather and his great great grandfather all did this) and your wife is sitting at home waiting for you.
Broken dreams so grand Sing of his final stand Long live *Carolus* Brought BY soldiers hand Back to the father land *LONG LIVE CAROLUS REX!* Fucking chills im so glad this one got a modern lyric vid, im sure many sabaton fans didnt even know about this one
Love these lyric videos, PLEASE keep making them!!! My grandmother doesn't like metal music but she loves hearing the stories and likes to play these videos on mute so she can experience the beautiful, emotional lyrics you make.
I read the title and was like "huh? I never heard of this before" only to realize this Video is only two hours old. Its a masterpiece as always, this is definetly in my top five Best sabaton songs
As a finnish man, this album has made me proud of this part of our history as well. Proud that my country and it's people were a part of this great empire. But also, very glad at independence now for over 100 years. But, even though I hate Sweden after some winter sports and for some other things, you are still a great and peaceful neighbour 🇫🇮🤝🇸🇪 Unlike some other neighbour...........
brilliant powerful song. They should have this in school so people (adults and kids) can learn history-maybe a cd released by you towards school? I'd buy in a heartbeat-well done guys and a safe happy holiday season to you and yours.
@@Jundiyun This band is the main reason why my interest in history went up. And I’m in high school, which is when you really start learning about these times.
Even as a half blood dane who quite possibly lost an ancestral family member to Carolus and his army this song brings a tear to my eye. He was a great leader of men and worthy adversary for any King of his day.
the wound was inflicted by an iron bullet, swedish soldiers used lead bullets, the norwegians used iron. He was killed by a shot of a norwegian soldier.
He for sure was a great general and leader! Sweden have been in constant wars since the 1200y up until 1800y for a country with relatively small population they were drained and tired of it.
WOW, so many comments already after 1 hour only. Makes me very proud to be swedish and a Saboton fan, 63 years old. To my satisfaction I can add to this song, that a group of scientist recently came to the conclusion that Carolus Rex was killed by a shot from the enemy, from a distance of 200 meters. Nice to hear it was not from one of his own. / Micke P
Even after watching this many times, I always thought it was "Broken dreams of man" and not the actual lyrics "Broken dreams so grand". However, both of them fit perfectly.
When I saw that MatPat was retiring, this was the first song that came to mind. And it definitely fits. He worked hard for many years to entertain us, and is now passing the torch on to someone else.
this singular song got me into sabaton and swedish history as a whole, thanks for that sabaton! rest in peace, charles, you inspired 714,505 people (as of may 8th, 2023)
Even though I am not of Swedish origin, I can't tell you how strongly this song moved me. Having listened to most of the other songs Sabaton has done you can hear the every band member put their souls into this, both the English and Swedish editions of the song. A truly beautiful song for the ages on a man that history shouldn't ever forget or wash away.
Yo sick pfp I kinda wanna have a "dance" But in all seriousness I'm listening to this after a celebration of life held in honor for my neighbors dog to remember her. R.i.p Mia, birth date unknown to me, died 2/1/2024. You will be remembered as a great dog who helped many ex soldiers get through many struggles.
Other songs by this channel are mostly fast paced, representing the stress of war. However, in this song about Charles XII's sudden death, the song is slow, potentially hinting at the grief the entire kingdom of Sweden had.
I know what you mean. There's just certain individuals that actually deserved just as much respect as they demanded. He was as terrifying as he was fair.
I don't think it's underrated, it's their most successful album made with hitting platinum status 4 times in Sweden. To me personally Carolus Rex album is their Magnum Opus and I don't think they'll ever manage to make a better one.
For some reason the silhouette of karl looks like a space marine to me. The shoulder pads, the body is the backpack sticking out above the head and the cloth is like a scarf. I cant unsee it now
Hey this sounds oddly familiar, oh wait it's a re-release, I love how the newer fans don't need to go back years to find these songs anymore, I think the oldest I know is "Harley From Hell" Very different to these but it's still great
