========= Race To The Sea LYRICS ==========
We’re keeping the kingdom free
As an archduke falls and the battle horn calls
our lives would never be the same
We were looking down the barrel of a gun
Now the war has come and the battle has begun
we are desperate and overrun
To the war drum we’ll be marching until it’s done
Lead the way, we will follow into the fray
We will hold the line we will not be led astray
For king and for country we, are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea
The last piece of Belgium is free, we’re keeping a sliver
A cog in the war machine, October of 1914
As our foe draws forth we are moving on north
we will never let them have it all
There’s a price for freedom paid by Belgium’s sons
They may take our towns, they may conquer our grounds
we’ll defend the nation and the crown
We’ll uphold our independence with our guns
All the way, on to triumph or to judgement day
We will follow and we will not be led astray
See a king and a soldier, fighting shoulder to shoulder
See a king and a soldier, fighting shoulder to shoulder
He overruled his commanders, he made a last stand in Flanders
We see our king and a soldier,
they’re fighting shoulder to shoulder
To keep the last piece of Belgium free
All the way, on to triumph or to judgement day
We will follow and we will not be led astray
For king and for country we are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea
We’re free
For king and for country we are flooding the river
No more of our country lost, the line will be held at all cost
========= Historic Fact ==========
The Entente and the Belgians successfully crushed the Germans’ hopes of continuing the Schlieffen Plan during The Battle of the Yser, mainly because of the deliberate flooding of the Yser Canal, which greatly affected the German trenches.

Has the band considered partnering with Osprey Publishing to maybe see about having Osprey write some history books to tie in with some of the songs that Sabaton writes about? Some songs have good books that they are based off of, but others seem like they would benefit from having a 48 or 64-page book written about it. The Race to the Sea would be a good candidate as I think there is one book about it that I can find. The WWI Italian Front is something that we absolutely do not cover in the US, so it's completely unknown. Might be a good way to tie in Sabaton History with historian authors.

fun fact= his wife (queen Elizabeth of Belgians) was nicknamed the "Queen nurse" because she established a new hospital and visited the soldiers to boost morale, on occasion she even helped in operations,... she even sent flowers, chocolate + she gave also presents to the nurses to show them she appreciated their work as nurses.

If I remember correctly, the royal family of Belgium chose to stay in their country even after the Germans overran it; the king chose to fight wih his men in the trenches, the queen established a hospital and worked as a nurse (As you said), and the prince joined the army at 12. Though I'm sure the prince had to be evacuated eventually, this was truly a badass royal family that deserved respect.

Fun fact: officially the Belgian monarch doesn't hold the title of "King of Belgium" and instead holds the title of "King of the Belgians" this was decided when Belgium gained it's independence to reflect that the King was supposed to be a King of the people. Albert I lived up to said title.

Just imagine. You've been fighting a losing war for weeks on end and your nation is about to fall. And when all hope seems lost, there is your king. He's not simply there to cheer you on, but to fight by your side and risk his life same as you risk your own. Imagine how inspiring that must have been. It's no wonder they turned the tide there.

My great great grandad fought in this battle as part of the Grenadier Guard, who at that time were serving as part of a Scottish regiment; he ended up making it home in one piece and died a year before my dad was born. His brother wasn’t so lucky, he fought in WW2 at the beaches on D-Day and was one of the first to land but tragically died of his injuries 4 days in at the age of 29 and is buried in Normandy, I’m hoping to go over soon and pay my respects since no one has ever visited his grave

Tu as encore des frissons. Tu as Oma beach.Utah beach. Etc .. Comme plages à voir. Salut.

I mean here in The Netherlands the people at my school were asking since the first year when WW2 was coming as a subject in history, so there certainly is a lot of interest in that. But i do agree that WW1 gets overshadowed really easily by the one that came after maybe it has to do with the fact that we didn't particepate but it does get taught along with WW2. WW1 is just really easily overshadowed because we mostly look at the consequences it had and because WW2 had an impact on the entire world (WW1 dealt with a lot of countries too but not on the scale that WW2 did). And this is apparent in the fact that i didn't know what the fields of verdun were and that i didn't know about Yser or the fact that there were tanks in WW1, but did already know about D-day, Bastogne, Stalingrad, The battle of Britian and the battle of berlin.

Apparently they thought the one in World War I was worse, but they were Catholic, and so lucky enough to only have their house occupied. (I've been to that house a good few times, actually) But anyway - point is I'm proud of my Belgian heritage and this song really gets me pumped. I have listened to this song easily over a hundred times now, and it never fails to draw a tear from my eyes. The sheer bravery, the hopelessness, and then to have your King come to the front line himself, to have his wife supporting the nurses. That is how you lead, from the front, with your men. And then to basically have your King tell you "This far men, this far, and no further!", it's a toss up for me between this song and "Resist and Bite", which is my favorite song about the brave Belgians.
