Remember that the Iron Cross existed in the German Empire long before National Socialism took power.

"Iron Cross" = "...from the Third Reich.."??? Awarded by the Nation = German Republic, lead by National Socialistic Party??? 😮 Hhmm... (WTAF?) Preferably for the service on Deutch Army(Wehrmacht) huh? Roots of the Iron Cross lays on the days of the Knights, medieval times. Corrections are welcomed... 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙 💯 💥 And Lauri Törni, Larry between friends😋🙃, was the 'vibe' and a refugee outta here from Finland 🇫🇮

Larry Thorne has Legion Of Merit too and he was US Congress first choice to lead MacV-Sog! He is only SS Officer who is buried Arlington and will stay there. Congress made statement years ago that Larry will stay there forever, but he is the only exception.

Poor Törni, truly "addicted to war". He felt betrayed after Finland lost the war against the Soviet Union: first a war hero and suddenly a traitor. I knew a veteran who had "worked" (a radio spy) with Törni after the war in the same premises (oppposite the hotel in which the supervisory commission and general Zdanov stayed). For me, Simo Häyhä is still nro 1 with gen. Airo but Törni definitely was a hero in Finland's fight against the Soviet Union. Törni, though, it is a bit tragic one (IMO).

I need to finish the book "The Life and Times of Larry Thorne" it is all about this incredible man! I also met one of Larry's squad members a few years ago. His name was James Brown and he served with Larry in 10th Special Forces Group in Bad Tolz, Germany. They were part of the occupation forces. James said that Larry kept to himself and NEVER spoke unless it had something to do with the mission. I guess his English wasn't the best.

@@andrewludwig9251 Interesting! Sounds (keeping to himself) very much what I have heard but also very Finnish (only that he was born in Karelian Istmus, and Karelians are usually pretty talkative). On the other hand, he must have been quite bitter (the result and consequences of the lost war). A former Finnish president, Mauno Koivisto, served in the same department with Törni. He told that Törni was well-liked superior, but also withdrawn and quarrelsome at times.

He earned the Cross of Mannerheim, the highest Finnish award And The German Iron Cross 2nd class. Now that in itself is pretty hard to get. Then there's the purple heart and the bronze star. The Distinguished flying cross was his last award after his body was recovered after the Vietnam war.

Do you remember the ´69 Movie "Green Berets" staring John Wayne? Its based on Lauri´s or Larry´s actions for what he received the Bronze star. He later on was a MACV Advisor and MIA since ´65, until the crashed Helicopter and his remains were found in the late 90s. His last rest is on the Arlington Cemetary

He is and will be. There were some SS minded persons buried there and those has been removed. They were not even members at all. Congress said Larry will be the only one who can rest there even he is a SS officer. He has done for US more that even books tell. They even asked Finnish relatives that can they bury him to Arlington.

If I remember correctly, Lauri wasn't a particularly big fan of fascism. He just hated communism more. And Germany wasn't attacking his country at the time, and free training sounds good.

Lauri Allan Törni or Larry Thorn -- He started as private in Finnish army got the highest medal possible, then joined Germans, illegally, with false identity. Rose from private to highest honor in Germany.. then joined us with another false name, and also switched his name.. Got 2nd greatest honorific in US army + green baree + purple heart.. he joined 3 different armies as a rookie.. and got higest(or close to highest) ranks in each army he fought in.. Died in Vietnam War. Was discovered, and only then his fighting knowledge was.. acknowledged.. He did alot of things during that time.. including leading an attack with troops he couldn't speak the same language, he made them do his orders by both fist and pointing.. Dude was war-incarnate.

If he did, I have one question: why would a Korean fight for the Japanese? Unless it was for survival reasons, which I can understand.
