They are stubborn, but fierce and honorable warriors, who doesn't love a short man with the will of a thousands, they are great in cooperative combat and military discipline, while the elven armies are elegant, the best archers of middle-earth, they have good manners and are well trained for combat as well, both sides have great warriors with different styles, a beautiful way of handling the situation, especially on dwarfs side
Dwarven war fighting is so based in protecting each other and moving as one unit to counter the enemies size snd number it’s absolutely beautiful to see.
Until the dumbasses from under the mountain come out all one at a time leaving each other open for attack. The cousin who showed up is a real dwarf he deserves to be king.
@@evilcartmensolo7198 To be fair they were attacking. It's hard to make a formation in the blue while being pinned and attacked. Plus they were still protecting each other by following up a kill, and just one throwing axe
@@pasp9866 The rivalry betwwen elves and dwarves in the Tolkien universe is surprisingly complex, but in most cases it boils down to the elves looking down upon the dwarves for being short, stocky and inelegant. The dwarves see the elves as cocky weaklings and blame them for much of the evil in the world (partially rightly so). But they were never outright enemies, apart from a few incidents, and often stood togehter against their common enemies. There's also the whole dwarf creation tale, but Im not gonna try to do that on on memory...
Orcs though are the ainciant and so enmy and have killed many thousands of either sides peoples. Far more than have of each other. . They may have a grudge but they are willing to put it down to face down the Orcs.
@@elgehater the basics of creation are that the dwarves are the eldest race but were forced into stasis so the elves rose first. It was basically due to the miar squabbling (can't remember which two)
I loved those ballista's. Besides the obvious purpose of completely destroying the elves primary tactic of raining arrows to wipe out large numbers of an army, the tails of those ballista are spread out so well that when it lands on the elves it pretty much does exactly what the elves arrow volley was suppose to do.
0:44 Oh my god, that face just captures the situation perfectly. Your race is well known as being fantastic archers whilst the dwarves are known as greedy drunkards and when you unleash an arrow barrage, not only is it fully countered without enemy casualties but it instead cuts down his own men. Just pure fear and shock
God I love how the dwarves do not hesitate for even one second to fall in formation. Thats what dwarves are about in Tolkien's world and D&D. Perfectly disciplined when it comes to battle, drunken belching fools when not.
@@filipbitala2624 Have you ever shot an arrow that far before? Long Bows that are made to fire that far are incredibly hard to draw back and release for that much range. It'd be impossible for them to be able to re-draw and fire a volley like that in a short repetition, where the Dwarves were using Ballista. They just had to load them and crank the rope back, and it was ready, no strain on the arms or back. Now, if the Elves had been able to consider another option, of changing their volleys into smaller batches, then, they could out time the ballista, but they were in the midst of combat, and a very large rampaging herd of massive goat bull horse creatures, with heavily armored and weaponized, screaming dwarves happened to be approaching at an alarming rate. They were pretty much in training motion mode. Not much room to think about a different tactic, they had to hold to what they knew, so that they could at least try to survive. Its seen even in irl modern day combat even. Regardless of the setting, of it being military, a fistycup bout, or even a simple competitive game. If you are on the ropes, and don't have enough time to think of what to do, your body just resorts to the muscle memory you built into it. For them Elves, it was just everyone firing their arrows at the same time, and then side stepping like a guy lag stepping you on CoD and there is nothing you can do about it cause your internet isn't good enough to outmatch the other's crappy internet.
Shieldwalls are only effective if there's no other way. That was a hastily set up shield wall with open flanks. In my opinion, the sudden jump of the elves saved those dwarves
@Obihugzenobi the dwarves were given an offering: Reveal who had the one ring to get the remaining Dwarven Rings and Moria, they refused said offer. Another thing, Dwarves defended Lake Town / Dale when it came to it, the elves wanted to leave Middle-earth as soon as problems arose.
They're strong and excellent craftsman but Elves are just genetically superior. But a dwarfs determination can bring him to equal the natural edge of a Elf. The Dwarves are Batman and the Elves are superman. If the Dwarves had the equal attributes, height, they would probably be better than the Elves in everything. Like if Batman had the same powers as Superman. Batman would literally rule the universe but he wouldnt because hes Batman and only wants good. Also Batman's will and determination are several times better than superman. Superman just sucks is my point
Yep its even funnier to see that they also have some really good tactics while working together which also shows that have along history with that as well XD the perfect love hate relationship
I absolutely love that detail as it’s tactics and weapons you wouldn’t think of unless you knew you’d face an enemy that always makes use of the other so it’s the perfect counter, but also the fact that the elves and dwarves have tactics that work seamlessly together
i believe that the pike wall was used so that the elves could go over and gain a height advantage over orks farther ahead and the dwarfs kill the closer ones making a double front it's actually a pretty good idea. though i've studied to much ancient war tactics/ its a high risk high reward thing
Sounds like a Thorin song A short man from Erebor A man of the wild Thrown into combat Where bodies lie piled Hides his emotions His blood is running cold Just like his victories His story unfolds Crosses grow on Erebor Where no soldiers sleep And where hell is six feet deep That death does not wait There’s no retreat So charge and attack Going to hell and back
To Hell and Back is about Audie Murphy (1925--1971), the most decorated American soldier in the entire Second World War. In 1942 he falsified his age to 18 to join the Army and until 1945 he participated in battles on Sicily, at Salerno, Anzio and Rome, and also in southern France and the Alsace region. After the war he suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder ("shell shock") and as one of the first he took a stand for war veterans with such psychological disorders. In 1949 he wrote his autobiography "To Hell And Back" which was filmed in 1955 with Murphy playing himself. Over the next two decades he played in 44 movies. In 1971 he died in a plane crash, in the only 46 years of his life he was awarded with 33 medals, including the Medal of Honor and three Purple Hearts.
@@jerzyfigas8479 that's exactly what happen in the movies. As soon as the orc army shows up the dwarfs stop fighting the elfs and get into formation to fight the orcs instead
Through action,a man becomes a hero. Through death,a hero becomes a legend. Through time,a legend becomes a Myth. And by learning from the Myth,a man takes action.
yeah, but you know that the archers, when the first arrow hits the target, they are putting the third in the air, the strategy is stop the enemy before he hits you, so they would have to make a lot of those things
As soon as the Orcs appeared out of holes, the Dwarves yelled: - "My God! Look at that amount of EXP!" - "Great! I will finally be able to use that Lvl100 armour!" - "Forget about the armour! We'll be able to use thoseMithrill swords!"
Elves: You can't defend against our arrows Dwarves: You thought wrong Thranduil: I lost a quarter of my army, so I should use the same tactic they won't see it coming Dwarves: Easy kills
2:47 I just love that they have a death chariot pulled by giant battle goat/rams. And Kili sharpening his sword on the wheel as they charged forward was just amazing.
@@halbkuppe4895 depends on how strong the sword is. As some people of Middle Earth are too superior (for example, Elvish blades DON'T dull at all. If that sword was made by a dwarf it could be tough than any sword we would manage to make.)
Nah.. as a friend of mine once put it. There is a reason when you play WOW, you only punt gnomes when they are alone. Because if you do it with a Dwarf present... there is this hyperactive, over compensating, angry drunken, Orc hating, Super Midget, with the Strenght of an Orc and the Durability of a Tauren.. stand next to him.. huffing at you that :"He spilled me BEER! AND I AM PISSED!". While behind you stands your arse.. on your Blood Elf going "Urgh.. I broke a nail!". Seriously..... Seriously.. even the Gnome will be laughing at me. Damn Alliance, they have been hiding behind those shorties for far to long by now :(... bloody cowards.
you can see the extreme discipline of the dwarves as they equip themselves with weapons that counter the ranged attack tactics of the elves and have a cavalry of armored goats capable of breaking through shield walls. not only that, when the orcs appeared, the dwarves were undeterred and immediately put up a wall of phalanx shields to effectively stop the surge, only to see the elves driven by their pride in being protected by dwarves causing them to rush the enemies outside the shield wall which would have stopped them successfully... even with this stupid move by the elves, the dwarves quickly changed the defense formation to an attack one to save the elves from being killed by an attack in orca claw. oh, and I forgot to mention the powerful contingent of tanks capable of laying waste to disorderly groups of soldiers along with a repeater crossbow capable of blasting away distracted units.
Whenever I see this scene I cant get over the fact of how the dwarves responded so quickly and in unison to the new threat while the elves just stood there looking at the oncoming charge. Then finally reacting! and jumping over a shield wall into a charging army just about to slam into said shield wall... DWARVES FOREVER!!!
The elves are an older race and can't adapt as well. The dwarves are just second to humans as the newest and most adaptable. Tolkien makes this a key point in his books and the movies do a good job to show that.
Riding a G.O.A.T with my battle brothers i would gladly die with my battle brothers. And can we appceaite how the Dwarves tactics and bravery for the frontline is just astounding and a moment for our fallen battle brothers.
@God of the Eternal light. Actually yes it is. There is an amazing complexity to Caucasians. Haplogroups and so on. The world breaks rules pretty quick when you pay attention to it.
Oldest elf in middle earth was cirdan, over 3,600 years old also in the books there are no twirly whirlies just dwarven armor was too good... Mirkwood is also not good at large scale battles better at skirmish and ambush
i like to think that elfs and dwarfs have this ancient plan for this exact event, they are fighting each other and they line up to fight the orks like that was agreed apon by encient dwarfs and elfs
All hail Peter Jackson. He do magic to everything he touch. Love "To hell and back" with my beloved swedish band Sabaton. You guys rock. Keep on rocking.
One of the best pieces of advice my father ever gave me, "Never piss off someone who is at the perfect height to either punch or headbutt you square in the balls."

Audie Murphy, a east Texas farm boy who was so skinny and undersized the Army Infantry BARELY allowed him to enlist after the Marine Corps and Army Paratroopers turned him down. He ended up being the most highly decorated American soldier of WW2, earning EVERY medal for bravery the US Army offers including the Medal of Honor AND the French Croix de Guerre and the Belgian Legion de Merit. 'To hell and back' was his post war autobiography and biopic where he actually played himself.
meelee wins if it can get in meelee range. If the rangers stand in a clump they lose their switfness and the tactile advantage of being a ranger. If the elfs were smart they would spread out, like rangers on a cliff and the rest as decoy on the ground. If that was so the dwarfs can't parry from 2 angles at the same time. They parry the arrows from the ones from the ground, but then the ones coming from the cliffs can just keep firing and the dwarfs can't do shit. Noob elfs think too one- dimensional. The dwarfs are miles ahead of them in terms of actually planning strategy, counter attacking etc.
and thats why you should never bring bow and arrows to a dwarven ballista fight imagine legolas and his arrows, killing one orc at a time, versus gimli on a ballista, taking them by the dozen, and saying "it doesn't count as only one !"
depends on the humans you are referring to there Númenor had humans that could fight on par with elves and dwarfs, but most of them died when it sunk in Lord of the Rings lore there are a few survivors which includes many rangers among them.
One thing I loved about these movies was seeing the Company fight together. Seeing them create a step latter of shields for Bofur to use and jump on to the giant troll, or watching a throwing axe hot-potato between like five people in the middle of battle. They're live a freaking hive mind, and the movies made everything they did so cartoonishly seemless that it's hard not to get excited watching.

The fact that the dwarves never backed down when the elves did and had decided to die fighting makes them so honourable. God I literally shrieked in the cinema when the elves finally came to their aid to fight together. This is cinema my friends.
"Holy hell, those javelins just shredded all of our arrows at once _AND_ punched holes in our lines!" "..." "Everyone, ignore the last three seconds and do the same thing again!"
It actualy was a logical thing to fire again since a balista like that should take a very long time to reload compared to a bow but dwarves appear to be extremly fast at reloading balistas.
what you forget is after the elf lines were blown back by unexpected anti arrow Ballista, the elves are momentarily in shock and need to regroup before firing again, so that gives the Ballistas some extra time. But still the reloading of the Ballistas here is impossibly fast :D
Dwarves have cartridges for their artillery and crossbows if you remember the goats pulling the chariot with the big crossbow attachment and a crank to fire repeatedly.
Peter the Great : I think that song would fit better when Gandalf the White comes with the Rohiram* and goes down that almost 90° hillside during the Battle of Helms Deep.
@@tyleryoung4081 Yeah, that hate is pretty much genetic and built into culture. Plus the iron hills Dwarves where an well trained military, they rallied, formed up and no questions. no pause. might die sure. King calls for charge, no hesitation.
Yeah, nothing. JUST the best warriors Middle-Earth has ever met. :) They look like retards at the movies, but they are, in theory, the best of the best.
Lore-wise, while elves and dwarves are... not friendly around the time of the Hobbit and LotR, Dwarves and Orcs/Goblins are hated blood enemies. The Mount Gundabad (the place where Durin the First, progenitor of Durin's Folk, had awoken, and thusly the most sacred place of the Dwarves) had been taken by the Orcs and turned into their militarized capital, despite several attempts to dislodge them. Khazad-dûm, also known as Moria, had been the jewel of the Dwarven race, but then it fell to Durin's Bane (a Balrog of Morgoth) and was populated by orcs/goblins. Thror (descendant of Durin) was murdered by Azog in Moria, and upon Thror's decapitated brow Azog carved his name into the flesh and bone. Suffice it to say, that forever burned Azog's name into Dwarven hearts, and kicked off what was called the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Placed against any foe, a Dwarf would turn his back to them to slay one of the hated and thrice-cursed Orcs. lotr.wikia.com/wiki/War_of_the_Dwarves_and_Orcs
nah, i think letting the elves jump between orcs and dwarves was a genious strategy of the dwarves. That way they could poke the elves butts while the elves are busy with the orcs. Thats why they immediately charged, when the elves were in front of them. It was magnificient of you to spot that, fellow elve hater.
Being able to withstand that arrow onslaught with bigger arrows that shatter the fragile elven wood arrows. To be able to see the director's envisioning of the story written in words - This deserves at least an honorable mention in best Unheard of Songs of the 2010's.
