======= To Hell And Back LYRICS =======
A short man from Texas
A man of the wild
Thrown into combat
Where bodies lie piled
Hides his emotions
His blood’s running cold
Just like his victories,
His story unfolds
Bright
A white light
If there’d be
Any glory in war
Let it rest
On men like him
Dead men will never come back
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell’s six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back
A man of the 15th
A man of Can Do
Friends fall around him
And yet he came through
Let them fall face down
If they must die
Making it easier
To say goodbye
Bright
A white light
If there’d be,
Any glory in war
Let it rest
On men like him
Who went to Hell and came back
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back
Oh gather round me
And listen while I speak
Of a war
Where Hell is six feet deep
And all along the shore
Where cannons still roar
They’re haunting my dreams
They’re still there when I sleep
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
and where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back

Fun fact about Audie Murphy: By 1968, he was in bad financial circumstances from his gambling and a bad business deal. In spite of his financial difficulties, Audie Murphy refused to star in cigarette and alcohol commercials, mindful of the influence he would have on young people. He was more than just a brave soldier; he was a man of decency and integrity.

Just rediscovered this song. Audie Murphey is still a hero here in East Texas. I once got to read letters home by one of his men, (who apparently moved here after the war). He was there when Murphy stood on the burning tank firing everything the gun had at the Germans. Unlike in the famous movie there was six foot of snow on the ground, and the author of the letter wrote that he asked Murphy why he stood on that burning tank emptying the gun, Murphy replied "It was warm!" A more Texan answer was never given... God rest his soul.

As a former soldier and a disabled veteran, I cannot say how truly amazed I am with this band. Not only is their music terrific, they do not play favorites. They are apolitical. They salute soldiers of all stripes, regardless of the flag they fought under. They recognize that the fighting men (and women) of all nations) are united by the sweat and blood that they have shed, whether they wielded rifles or swords or were mounted on warhorse or biplanes and that war is war. Whether the wars are just or not, the men and women that have fought them were more or less much like myself. I was no hero, just an 11M. The injury that I sustained was a training accident and when my unit was deployed to what would become Desert Storm, I was cut loose although I fought tooth and nail to go with them. I was the last M60 gunner in the 3/41st INF, and all they had left were SAW gunners. My departure from the unit left them without my pig. For three years I had struggled with a bad AC joint, no assistant gunner, and numerous problems with my chain of command. I had carried my hog, the spare barrel, the spare barrel, the tripod, 400 rounds of ammo, the rest of my equipment and often been saddled with obstacle breaching gear, to fulfill my job to the best of my ability. I underwent surgery for my busted shoulder but it only got worse and my COC shuttled me from job to job during my recovery. I had stood back-to-back CQ duties. I had served as battalion and company clerk. I had assisted the NBC and communication NCOs. I worked for the S2. I trained soldiers for the EIB in grenade recognition and vehicle recognition. My wife and I drew posters with the grenades on them. I went to the division microcomputer course but ended up teaching it. I loved the Army, but I was in a rotten unit. I was stationed at Fort Hood. We had a 2% re-enlistment rate. Men with 18 years in refused to re-enlist because they had to stay at Fort Hood in the 3/41st. I saw soldier after soldier find ways to take a less than honorable discharge just to get out of the unit. At one time, there were 11 congressional inquiries going on at the same time on my unit. I saw numerous horrendous training injuries and a few deaths caused by careless leadership and indifference. My last captain led us on a night patrol where he insisted on crossing a wadi in blackout conditions with a thunderstorm in the distance. The dismount was halfway across when we were hit by a flashflood. One minute the wadi was dry, the next a waist-high wall of water slammed into us, washing half the dismount element of the company downstream and stringing us out for a distance of around three miles. A ten klick patrol ended up taking us off post and turning into a thirty klick journey to nowhere. We ended up on some civilian's ranch. When we eventually made it back, we were loaded up on the tracks, hauled back to the barracks and had to clean both Bradley crew's and our equipment, as well as that of the officers and command staff. This was SOP for C 3/41. I love the Army. I fondly remember old 2 AD. I hate the 3/41st with a burning passion. Don't get me wrong, not every NCO or officer in the 3/41 was incompetent, mean spirited, or a demon from hell sent to Earth for the sole purpose of making soldier's and their family's lives an unendurable nightmare. It was the few that were, however, and the first sergeants and commanding officers that permitted these individuals to act with impunity or who condoned and encouraged such behavior, that made the 3/41st what it was and what ruined so many soldiers. It is also the reason so many former members of 3/41, like myself, are drawing medical disability.

You sir are a true soldier in my eyes sir. Soldiering on in battle and in life. The kind of men us civilians don't see, we can't comprehend how hard you work, and yet your sacrifices are what keeps us alive. Sir, thank you for your service. And for who you are. I may not know who you truly are. But man from what you said I think that's enough for a medal. Medal of absolute sheer will. I wish that exists because you deserve it sir. But as a civilian I can't really know what you think about it, what do you think is the message that could be taken from what you experienced sir?

There are still several inquiries going on for issues at Ft Hood (Fort Cavazos now, but I am a traditionalist). It looks like the issues reached far beyond your unit. Not that it makes what you went through any easier or better. I saw a lot of similar things happen while in the Navy, where a toxic chain of command just wrecked morale. Unfortunately, onboard ship, the Captain is second only to God, so there really wasn't anywhere for the people affected to go. I am a disabled vet as well, so keep fighting the good fight bud. There are more good ones out there than there are foul-ups, they just don't stand out as much usually.

PTSD was not recognized as a mental illness until 1980. A lot of men from WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam went either untreated for years to decades or died before it was recognized. I can remember at one function of a group made up solely of men who had been awarded the Purple Heart on at least on occasion (one Combat Medic from the Vietnam War had 3 clusters on his indicating 4 awards) inexperienced reporters from a small local TV station ask some VERY wrong questions. This was a Saturday night dinner and I spent the rest of the night ferrying guys to our local VA Medical Center due to flashbacks and general meltdowns and it continued on into Sunday. Some of them spent as much as a month in the psych ward due to that. And it wasn't only the Vietnam guys, the absolute worst was a guy from the Korean War who finally unblocked an absolute horror he had seen and went straight off the deep end. He was hospitalized for several months and wound up with 100% VA Disability.

Many of you may not realize that much of the songs' lyrics come from the Audie Murphy poem "The Crosses Grow On Anzio" The Crosses Grow On Anzio Oh, gather 'round me, comrades And listen while I weep; Of a war, a war, a war... where hell is six feet deep. Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh how can a soldier sleep? The going's slow on Anzio And hell is six feet deep. Praise be to God for this captured sod That's rich where blood does seep; With yours and mine, like butchered swine; And hell is six feet deep. That death does wait There's no debate; No triumph will we reap The crosses grow on Anzio, Where hell is six feet deep. -Audie Murphy

Maybe u must read the description: ======= "To Hell And Back" SONG STORY ======= This is the story of Audie Murphy, the most decorated US soldier in WW2. There are simply too many stories about his deeds to even try to cover them in such a short text, but among his fellow soldiers he was truly a hero and a great inspiration. When he returned from the war he suffered heavily from post-traumatic stress (back then called shell shock) and after a long time on medicines he finally locked himself into a motel for 1 week to cure his addiction of the drugs. After this he became a very famous movie star and even acted in the movie about himself.

I think the visuals are spot on. The hell they reference is the hell of battle and the hell of not being able to forget what they have both done and seen. They reference this when they say, " let them fall face-down, if they must die, making it easier to say goodbye", meaning its easier to forget some if you never see their face when they die. Those who experience combat and see their brothers die often say that looking them in the face when they die is the hardest thing to ever forget. In my opinion the visuals represent this idea. It doesn't help his cause when he is trying to conquer drug addiction, it often makes defeating your demons far more difficult.

It's even worse here in Germany. The german soldiers also went through hell, and my grandfather suffered really hard from what he saw in WW2. But on top of that, the german veterans were despised because of what they did. They defended their homeland (in the late phase of war) and were hated for doing so. I proudly named my English Mastiff Puppy Audie Murphy after my late Vietnam Combat Vet Father’s favorite hero/ soldier of all time. I grew up on war movies and visited “Murphy’s” grave at Arlington as a kid. Dad shockingly passed on 7/3/20 to heart failure. I found this apricot mastiff puppy “Tank”, born on the 4th of July, the day after we lost our Dad. It was meant to be. I discovered this band and this incredible tribute to Audie by visiting a local pet store here in NJ. A young lady named Sarah told me the story of Sabaton and this song. She plated it on her phone and I just lost it right there, blubbering snot bubbles in the kibble aisle with a perfect stranger. I was just bringing the dog in to get a bone and left in tears of compassion, reverence and humility. Another random act of kindness inspired by our mutual love of animals, history and rocking music. Another kid at UPS also recognized his name and told me about your band. Your band is kinda famous in New Jersey! Amazing song! Incredibly honorable tribute. Ive been recently diagnosed with, and I’ve learned I’ve been living with CPTSD my whole life. My Mother’s late Father was a WW2 POW and coupled with my Dads combat experience, ny family’s dysfunctional issues are undoubtedly and indirectly due to the effects of WAR. It’s been a hell of journey! I’m pushing 50 here, and life’s taken a strange turn the last couple years! I’m working on my memoirs about my life’s experiences, titled “Hell or Hollywood” in honor of Audie Murphy’s “To Hell and Back”. It’s incredible that Audie isn’t forgotten and I’m amazed at the number of young people in this area who not only know of Murphy’s story but are huge fans of his! Thank you Sabaton. 🙏🏼❤️ Thank you for your Service Audie, Dad and everyone else who served in the Armed Forces.

This song was the first song I heard by Sabaton I had just read a biography about Audie Murphy and I was looking on youtube for More information about him. I instantly fell in love with this song and started listening to other songs by Sabaton falling in love with many of them as well. This is a beautiful song about a Extraordinary Man. After his service Audie broke with the tradition in the U.S Military of ignoring the longtime Traumatic Effects that War has on the heroes that fight in them. He was criticized for speaking about his struggles after the war but felt that it was important the public know about the War that continues inside of every Veteran. He spoke out to raise awareness about what would soon be called PTSD and why soliders brave as they may be all need help in adjusting to life after war. This song is a great Tribute to an amazing man. Audie Murphy was a Hero in multiple ways and one of the greatest examples of American Men. Rest in peace and thank you for your service.

There are some that don't understand the power of a Sabaton song. Life hits different when someone makes an accurate song about it. Thanks guys. There are a lot of veterans out here struggling and don't know which way is up. I thought I was alone.

to all the modern women that say that size matters in terms of how tall a man has to be to be a protector and to make them feel safe. Do not judge a person by what they say (although that is more than evident on social toilet, I mean media. This is a fine example that it isn't the size of the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog that matters.

I really like how Sabaton doesn't just sing about historical events, they tell it from the perspective of the people involved. Really makes it feel more personal.

I listen to this song every time I think of my grandfather. He served on “The Big E”. Used to tell me of the reality of the war to a star struck child who loved Naval ships the most. The Sadness of losing friends in the pilots that went up. The joy of seeing them return home. I hope some day I can hear a song written about “The Grey Ghost” that my grandfather served on. I still sleep with All his medals above my bed. So Thank you Sabaton. I’ve only been listening for 3 years but your music means a lot.

I beat an opiate/fentanyl addiction. I thank Sabaton and their true storues for that. But that pain is something no one can understand unless you've been there. Plus I've never been to war. May he and they all be at peace now because that is all you want during that fight. Love and respect to you all. Share a pint with you brothers and sisters anyday. Stay together and stay strong.💪 from 🇨🇦.

Surprisingly impactful and hard to watch for a Rock song, just goes to show how Sabaton isn't all about the glorification of war and realizes the bloody nature and the mental imprints that war leaves behind on soldiers for the rest of their lives.

My Dad was in China during WW2, he never told much about it but he had the most God Awful nightmares and we had to toss books at him to wake him up because he was ready to kill when touched during one of those spells. He finally got so bad with them Mom moved to another room, I'd had to choke him down to stop him from strangling her on 3 separate occasions.

I suffer from Combat Induced PTSD; i was also a civilian nurse who worked with the Combat related PTSD patients at our VA hospital. I thank the Vets there, who were my patients, they were a great help in learning to cope with the nightmares. PTSD, may mellow over the, but, the nightmares never go away, it has been 31 years and those nightmares are as fresh as if the incident happened this morning. No one can understand it, until they have lived it. This video is more than just of Murphy, it is about and for all who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This song has, in my opinion, THE best modulation in all of music industry. It might not be as heavily harmonized as on some other songs, but the effect it has on the tone of the song and ESPECIALLY on the lyrics (normally it would be "Crosses grow on Anzio..." whereas now it is "He saw crosses grow on Anzio"). The modulation and the two words in it change the whole chorus drastically. Typically in the the stories of Sabaton the hero is a soldier, and soldiers have the tendency to die. Especially as the chorus talking about death enstrengthens the grim image. But in this song, as the last chorus starts with the modulation, the listener is greeted with Audie Murphy who survived the war and is now talking about it afterwards. The mental image is so strong, in the first choruses it is just crosses on the fields of Anzio, and in the last chorus it is Audie Murphy peering over the crosses. He survived and he went to Hell and back. The modulation makes it even better as the lead guitar hits a higher note after the first line. It brightens up the melody, as the note formerly played on that place is hit multiple times in the lines of the melody. The new note brings the line a minor third higher. A modulation of a minor third is powerful, as the root note of the second chord of the chorus becomes the root note of the first one. Also a minor third up is way to find the root note of the major key when the minor key is known. This minor-to-major feel gives the melody even more brightness and warm tone, as it nearly feels like being in a major key even though it is in a minor key. That is an essay and a half.

Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and listen while I speak Of a war, a war, a war where hell is six feet deep. Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh how can a soldier sleep? The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is six feet deep. Praise be to God for this captured sod that rich with blood does seep. With yours and mine, like butchered swine's; and hell is six feet deep. That death awaits there's no debate; no triumph will we reap. The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is six feet deep.

I have listened to the this song three separate times. Every single time without fail I'm an emotional mess. Bawling my eyes out to point of insanity. The power of Sabaton and their dedication to history goes far and beyond. Knowing the story of Audie makes this song a Battlefield in itself it's that moving. He grew up as a child wanting to be a soldier. He wanted to be a Marine (would've been a great one in my opinion) but was deemed too small by the recruiter when he went to join during World War II. Audie joins and finds out war is not honorable, but a hellish nightmare concocted by the devil himself. No matter, Audie ties up the bootstraps and fights on. He keeps his men fighting. Pushes them and himself farther than what can be conceived. Then comes back to hell, something he thought was over. Audie is what all soldiers should aspire to be. He's a picture perfect example of what it means to be a soldier. Rest in Peace Audie. Heaven is much safer with you at watch.
