During the French and Indian War, England and France fought for control of North America. The French were greatly outnumbered and relied heavily on alliances with Native Americans.
Much of the fighting during this war took place in the New York Frontier around Lake Champlain and Lake George. These lakes combined with the Hudson river and the Richelieu River allowed troops to move through the undeveloped wilderness.
In 1755 the British built fort William Henry at the Southern end of Lake George, and the French constructed Fort Carillon at the Southern end of Lake Champlain. Over the next 2 years a series of small skirmishes and raids were fought between the two opposing forces.
In 1757 the French were determined to destroy Fort William Henry, and remove the British from the region. They began amassing a large army at Fort Carillon in July of 1757. The British sent out a scouting party to gather information on the French movements. It is this scouting party that was ambushed during the Sabbath Day Point Massacre.
