Bob Hoover is best known for his civil air show career, which started when he was hired to demonstrate the capabilities of Aero Commander's Shrike Commander, a twin piston-engined business aircraft which had developed a rather staid reputation due to its bulky shape. Hoover showed the strength of the plane as he put the aircraft through rolls, loops, and other maneuvers which most people would not associate with executive aircraft. As a grand finale, he shut down both engines and executed a loop and an eight-point hesitation slow roll as he headed back to the runway. He touched down on one tire, then the other, before landing. After pulling off the runway, he would start engines to taxi back to the parking area. On airfields with large enough parking ramps (such as the Reno Stead Airport where the Reno Air Races take place), Hoover would sometimes land directly on the ramp and coast all the way back to his parking spot in front of the grandstand without restarting the engines.
A few years after starting the show he began carrying passengers during the show. (The Shrike Commander carries six passengers.) These passengers became known as "Hoover's Heavers" due to the number who became airsick during the maneuvers.[citation needed]
With the advent of camcorders Hoover added a flourish to the act by pouring a glass of iced tea from a pitcher, while performing a barrel roll, a 1G maneuver.[15]
Hoover also served for many years as the official starter of the Unlimited-class races at the Reno Air Races. The race planes (mostly modified World War II fighter aircraft) joined up in line-abreast formation on Hoover's yellow P-51 Mustang, and when in satisfactory order the spectators would hear over the PA his famous radio call, "Gentlemen, you have a race." Hoover's plane would pull up sharply into a vertical climb as the racers dove toward the first turn. Hoover would circle overhead during the race, ready to assist any race pilots with problems. In several cases Hoover helped pilots with crippled race planes to a safe recovery by talking them down while flying in formation with them.

If you were ever in an airplane, Bob Hoover is who you would want in control. Granted he'll do a barrel roll when told not to, but he'll get you down safely.

I was a crew chief in the A/F working on T-39A's and sometimes they would come back from a flight the Mach Warning circuit breaker would be pulled. So the next time those pilots would come out for their next flight I would ask them jokingly about their flight speed last trip. They would ask why and I would tell them about the pulled C/B.

When I was at Eglin in the 70s, I would go to Base Ops and put myself on standby for the T-39s we had for "Base Flight", (and the UH-1Ns, 617 and 626, getting "Range Rides") and I got a chance to fly on the Saberliner, usually an out and back to Pope AFB, and sometimes follow on to Andrews AFB and back. Mostly training flights, so there was more "joy" sitting in the jump seat and watching the "new stick" getting training in. We got to do some "fun things" (and "pulling the breaker", was often involved). The jet was really fun at the transition speed of the slats, and often getting into Ditch rolls, whole the slats would pop in and out, one side then the other. Great "E ticket" ride, and I got paid to go along. Also got to see Bob Hoover in the Shrike Commander at Ramstein AB in the early 80s at "Flugtag", demo his energy management. Awesome times. Young people just cannot understand a lot of that which they will never experience. It truly was a different era, it was just things we got to do, and we never thought it would end...

First and only time I saw Hoover perform was at a little airstrip south of Houston, Texas. I think it was League City. This was the summer of either 1968 or 1969. Corky Fornoff was there in his Bearcat also. It was quite the show. Will never forget that one for sure. Bob has inspired generations of pilots and I include myself as one of them. God bless R.A. "Bob" Hoover.

Here in Southern California I got to see Bob Hoover many times. He was always the highlight of the show. He made that Commander dance.

I rode from LAX to MSFC Huntsville in a NAA corporate Saberliner, saw Hoover's Ole Yeller in the hangar while getting aboard. Box lunch served by a NAA VIP, Saturn/Apollo days.

Great aircraft and pilot. Playing music at airshows should be a felony! IMHO of course. We want to hear the aircraft!!!

The movie made about bob's life Flying the feathered edge he said he was actually going to be the test pilot on the X1 instead of Yeager but he had a test pilot friend who was new wanted to get a civilian CFI license they asked this guy if he flew jets they were new at the time he asked Bob to buzz the Springfield civilian airport which Bob did flying inverted and the guy would take credit for it later the colonel asked Bob if he buzzed the Springfield airport that day Bob admitted to it and that's how Yeager ended up in the X1 seat. Bob said he wasn't good at being a military officer type which is why he left the air force after that went to work for North American later Rockwell. Growing up every year I would see Bob in the shrike at the airshows at that time I had no idea who he was other then an airshow performer.

Ruined by the commentator and the stupid music. Met Bob Hoover when flying in SkyRace Tasmania Australia, over three years. Have hours of recordings of all his flying displays. The Legend in his own lifetime.

Two things wrong with this airshow. 1. The rachet mouth announcers need to just "shut up" during the performances. 2. I never understood why some of these airshows have to play that worthless background music. People come to here the planes. If we want music, we would go to a concert.
