Episode 6 of the Denim Jacket Series covers the Sack Coats from 1880, 1900, 1915 and some interesting others. The history of the coat intertwines with the French worker jacket and has some strange twists in the 20th Century.
OMG. Coming back for a 2nd comment. I HAVE a vintage Safari jacket! I bought it at Goodwill in the 90's. It's missing the orange tab and it took me till my more recent denim obsession to properly identify it. If memory serves me correctly, Max Perlich wore one in the 1989 movie Drugstore Cowboy.
Nice video, when I started searching RU-vid for denim content I was surprised there wasn’t more like this so it’s very welcome. Lots of versions I haven’t seen before in there too, keep up the good work
Lovely video, loved this series! Only thing my pedantic mind can't leave is 1:37, the US was definitely very industrialized by the 1860s! Millions of arms and clothes were being produced in factories. Would be nice to see a more accurate portrayal of the history of the Sack Coat - it was popular starting from the mid -1840s, not as "early" as the 1880s, say, as the video suggests. Amazing relic at 6:11, very modern-appearing jacket from 1910!
@@denindenim Appreciate the appreciation! Want to add, oh, the sack suit began as a sort-of casual suits in the 1840s, worn on outings. That turned into workwear in the 1850s, and by the 1860s and 1870s, they'd become your ordinary work suits for many. Absolutely love suits, and the sack coat as a particular item. Mister Freedom is a great seller.
I have a type 3 and a type 3 sherpa arriving in the mail. I’d kind of like to try a type 2 but its always looked a bit strange to me probably just because the pockets are lower than on most regular shirts and jackets. No shame to the type 2 lovers out there. None of my denim is Levi’s but your channel made me think I should cultivate a bit more respect for Levi’s considering the history, though I probably won’t buy any Levi’s.
@@denindenim I have an Unbranded Brand type 3 denim jacket (a sister company of Naked and Famous). It's getting some pretty decent fades. I also have a Brave Star sherpa lined denim based on the type 3 coming in the mail. I am really trying to stick with raw denim. The history videos were good, I might get a type 2 someday because of them.
Super interesting. I guess im type 2 and tripple pleate blaus guy my self. Maybe type 2 crafted is the way i should actually go but it is 98%cotton and 2%elastine that is ok for trousers but hm i need some more tyme to swallow that for a jacket haha
