I am so interested in these dolls I'm actually making one out of clay and making a plaster cast out of it

They're called Lupita dolls and are still popular in Mexico. It is better to buy from artisans because they're made with the original method (which is not paper mache -paper clay), but cartonería, similar to cartapesta. Also, the designs are very particular and traditional.
