In this Wednesday evening public talk at The Buddhist Society, explorer and cultural historian Dr. Ian Baker will give an illustrated presentation of his journeys into the deepest regions of the Himalayas in search of the geographical sources of the legend of Shangri-la, in places that Tibetan tradition refers to as Beyul, or “hidden lands.” Beginning with a review of his recently republished book, The Heart of the World: A Journey to Tibet’s Lost Paradise, which chronicles his team’s discovery of a long-imagined waterfall in the depth of Tibet’s Tsangpo Gorge, Ian will speak about his subsequent explorations in Tibet, Burma, and Bhutan, and his documentation of places that Tibetan texts describe as “celestial realms on Earth” and where meditative realization is said to arise spontaneously.
About the speaker:
Ian Baker holds a M.Phil in Anthropology and a Ph.D in History, and was honored by National Geographic Society as one of seven “Explorers for the Millennium” for his field research leading to the documentation of a sacred waterfall that Tibetan texts describe as the portal to the innermost realm of Beyul Pemakö, the ‘Hidden Land Arrayed Like Lotuses’. He is the author of seven books on Himalayan and Tibetan cultural history, environment, art, and medicine, including The Heart of the World: A Journey to Tibet’s Lost Paradise and Tibetan Yoga: Principles and Practices.
