One of the best uses of the sacrifice bunt in the game of baseball. Getting a runner from first all the way to third base.

I am so used to coming here for RULES ISSUES of 1 type or another that I kept waiting for what was wrong with this scenarios. LOL I'm like "OK what is wrong with this? I don't see it" LOL Still a good video. It just gave me a fake out due to my own misconceptions. I was like the Shortstop in this video.

Videos will start to upload on Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday videos will be more rule/umpire centered and videos on Thursday are more coach/player focused. Of course they are all great either way!

Thanks for the video very helpful. If the player pops it up your screwed. Also on a lefty I am calling the pitch inside if i think the player may be bunting and have my LF cheat in toward 3rd. As soon as bunt is down LF will get to 3b well before runner does and if 1b throws across the runner is an easy out if you have a veteran team. Thanks.

The main downside is you pop up the bunt and its an easy double play, or get thrown out at 3rd if they cover in time and make a bad decision, then you just sacd your way into a double play. Also if they do cover third, you might could have just stolen 2nd outright (which you probably can with most of the runners capable of going 1st to 3rd) and then had your batter try to hit for an RBI and you sac zero outs. Im not saying never do it, but there are definitely downsides to it.

I have a 1st & 3rd situation pick off play for you. When my son was younger his team would try to run it but they were too much of goofballs and could never execute. Need a right handed pitcher. Basically the pitcher lifts his knee and picks to 3rd. This sends the 3rd base runner diving back. The runner from first would always take off and then in theory the 3rd baseman would have an easy throw to 2nd to tag the runner and get him out in plenty of time. My sons club team (11U) at the time tried it 3 times and it would have worked easily all 3 times but we always had one kid in the play who wasn’t paying attention and screwed it all up. I hope you can implement it with your club and get a few videos of it because it would work great with kids who can execute it.

It's actually an easy play, you always go for the lead runner unless you're up by a lot of runs. If you see him going to third simply abandon the play to first and go to third, we do this by the first basement leaving the bag before the ball arrives and throwing to third. This is why you only ever see this play in lower levels of ball.

This may work at lower age/talent groups, but not at higher levels.

Particularly in pre-varsity situation, that's just a really long throw to make accurately: 1B to 3B. First basement aren't usually the strongest arm on the team, either. So, it's a great gamble that almost always pays off. JV and Varsity could get some stronger, more aware players who could play it properly ... but it's still a hard play for a defense to turn. Great video.

Great play. Curious, is this a one off per game / per team? How many times do you think you can pull this off in a single game before F6 and F5 become smart to it?
@MJHBaseball
@MJHBaseball Год назад
It was typically a one off per game, and only if the lead off guy got on base. It worked in part because no one expects the 2nd hitter to bunt in the first inning of a game. It's definitely a questionable tactic, but the team liked to score in the first inning. There is a psychological aspect to scoring first and scoring early. Plus our 2 hitter was a good bunter and fast, so he was bunting with the hope of being safe, but if not, at least we had a runner on 3rd with the 3 and 4 hitter still coming up.

I really enjoy these mic'd up games. I'm primarily a fastpitch softball umpire, and the ladies rarely talk to each other (with the obvious exception of between teammates) or to me behind the plate. Doesn't matter whether they are 10U or college girls; catchers and batters basically never have any small talk.

I’d say this is used in Fastpitch much more often due to baseball rarely bunting.

Like someone said before, it's a great pre-varsity play. When the players aren't very skilled and aren't very aware

One bluff throw to 1st when fielding the bunt and the lead runner will get caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd.

nice play. since the vid title said "almost" I was expecting to see how someone foiled you. How would you defend it if the tides were turned? Allow the batter to have first and try to get the runner in a rundown or at least hold to 2nd?
@auzmo
@auzmo Год назад
Start by having SS or 3B work to cover 3rd. You see similar plays in softball often, but you dont even have to steal.
@MH-Tesla
@MH-Tesla Год назад
The only way to defend is to have 3rd covered. SS, pitcher, catcher? Someone. The pitcher on the yellow team covered 3rd in this video. But... But, they still need to throw to 1st and still throw to 3rd in time to get that out, which is very difficult on a good bunt. On a bad bunt the runner from 1st stays at 2nd. Requires smart base running. This is actually a softball play tried a lot. It's rare in baseball, but it can work. Especially if you know going into the game that it's going to be a low scoring game. Both teams have an ace pitcher, getting this first run in the first inning can be huge.

I’ll give you an “almost” the batter pops up the bunt 😮 automatic DP
@kerrytodd3753
@kerrytodd3753 Год назад
Btw…..the way to defend it is very easy. The pitcher, or third baseman should always “check the runner” before throwing to first. Just a good glance will suffice, it’s well coached at the higher leagues. Always time to get the runner at first…unless it’s a perfect bunt, in that case the fielder would be wise to back throw to second base. FYI
@auzmo
@auzmo Год назад
@@kerrytodd3753 i wouldnt worry about all that stuff. Id say just make sure you cover early and if they want to risk it try to throw them out at third. If you are covering early they will almost never go at all. Happens in softball and if you cover early they wont go. If you cover late they might go and you might get them out, but you might not and could throw the ball away and let them take home as well.
