My favorite part, hubby asking, "what's an internet hug?" Then, hubby pulls you in; BIG HUG! So sweet! (adding, and, MANLY!) Woo-hoo, Anna! Virtual hugs from Texas, feeling the "sad", but necessary, 'carpet' as sound barrier, +kid proofing safety.zones for any "future" hard landings imagined. 😀 Really, really admire your ability, together, to make your dreams happen! Thank you, for sharing your journey, and life in Alaska. p.s. love that flooring! Destiny! Can hardly wait for full reveal.

I can totally sympathize with you, Ana, on the carpet topic. I am not a fan of carpet but I guess it has its usage and necessity. It has been delightful to watch your hubby's level of comfort in front of the camera develop. He seems so much more at ease, and his dry sense of humour is an added bonus. Another great video! 😊👍 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Great video! The carpet will be a much appreciated sound barrier, and you can always rip it out and put down laminate when there is no more "jumping off" going on. Your home looks so good, more beautiful every video- thanks for sharing!

I can't imagine how difficult it would be to get materials in Fairbanks, since we live in the lower 48. Have the kids shut their doors, then you won't see the carpet. Also, by the time they get their beds, dressers, toys in, the carpet won't be so noticeable. Paint clashing is like you say, not a big deal. As good as you are Anna, you will think of something to tie the colors together and to bring the eye to the wall and not the floor. In the 60's, my parents made a shadow box that was fairly deep. They painted it with primary and secondary colors and hung it on the wall. In my memory, it was huge. It held toys and books and all my precious things. I think they used a French cleat system. The gold shag carpet was barely noticeable. 😂. And I applaud your use of danish oil, it's easy to refurbish, allows the wood to breathe, and adds to wood's natural beauty without being high gloss. I like a product called Kramer's Antique Restorer for the same reasons, plus I like the smell. It's a bit more expensive than Watco. Also I applaud you and your husband on being smart shoppers. A lot of folks don't stop to think of the bottom dollar and over-extend when building. Y'all are on a perfect path, keep it up! 🤗

It's really nice carpet, Ana. Don't worry it feels as great as the rest of your gorgeous home. Looked like a nice natural cotton or wool. Plus the sound barrier will make the home practically larger because you won't hear every footfall. Love the herringbone tile.

Carpet in bedrooms is really comfortable and cozy, especially in Alaska, where the nights don't end, and its flippin cold for a huge chunk of the year. The kids will love it, and when they move out one day,you will be able to rip them out and chuck them away, then install whatever you want! Blessings to you guys.

Wife picked out the same laminate flooring. Hope it works out better for you! Always has a haze, and any liquid spill (with kids it will happen) not cleaned up right away will cause it to swell. We now wish we would have spent a bit more for hardwood flooring. Not the exact look she wanted, but... she has some picked out to replace the laminate flooring already! Your house is amazing!

Re paint color and flooring color, I find it easier to choose the flooring first then pick a paint to go with that, since paint colors are limitless while flooring is not. That grey is usually a solid choice and it looks fine on camera, but in person you might see the undertones of the "neutral" carpeting (brown? Yellow? Pink?) and those might clash. The only way I ever got it right for sure was to get an experienced carpet guy to help make the choice in the right light.

Having just lost my mom I was wondering if your title was something similar... Thank God not! You two are a refreshing blessing in an ocean of junk here on RU-vid! The stairs are great, in a Customer's home I'd have to pin those tubes because of the liability... The tile man is an artist!!! His craftsman techniques are pleasing to the eye without that crappy looking short piece of tile at one end.. That's what I enjoy about your dedication to excellence, building/decorating with that aim does not cost more in the end! Your devotion to each other and those kiddos still gives me hope that there are good people going good things in this world! I am one of 8 children and we had hardwood floors in our 5Bedroom colonel house. We had area rugs in each room. It was so easy to clean and if the wood needed to be cleaned and polished it was a lot easier then cleaning carpet because you have to move everything to clean wall to wall carpet. . My home was built in 1941 and we have oak flooring that the previous owner had covered with carpet. First project after closing on the house was ripping out the carpet. Thankfully the hardwood was not damaged. We do not have much insulation in the house and not between the different floors of the house. If I could I would add insulation or other sound deadening material to reduce the noise from anyone upstairs.

I am wondering two things...why couldn't you have used large area rugs over wood flooring? They look great and are easier to clean, etc.? Also, why did you choose a carpet that clashes with the walls? Couldn't you have chosen a color that goes with the gray? I'm so confused...

Carpet is fine if it is the right kind. Nice on the kid's feet. Makes their rummaging around quieter. You aren't in a climate where dust will be an issue. You already added a vacuum piping system in your wall so you can now teach your kids to clean their own rooms pretty easily. In the winter, carpet helps little naked feet. Doesn't look like the old shag I grew up with so you won't be dealing with the same issues you may have in the past associated with carpeting. Just remember to scotch guard it all because kids are messy.

Ana I so agree with the wood vs carpet issue. Was there not a way to put in insulation between the floor and ceiling?. You might want to have a no shoes in the house rule to avoid tracking in all kinds of dirt that could damage the floors and carpet. Do you have a mudroom?. If not build a unit that has sections for each family member to hang a coat or jacket, above the area for the coat have a shelf for hats, gloves and other small items. Below have an area for shoes/boots. Have a bench that can be used for putting on and taking off shoes. Have a place for your guests to put their things. In the garage or basement have an area for a shower that can be used to clean dirty dogs or people if the kids or anyone gets really dirty. Check out the shower that Ellie and Jared have in their garage. They also have a great storage /mudroom just off the garage and next to the laundry room. Your home is stunning.

1. I feel your pain - I dislike wall to wall. 2. I agree that some sort of sound proofing/soft landing surface is needed. 3. There are AMAZING wall to wall carpet options through non big box store wholesalers (my mum was an interior designer and I spent my childhood looking at carpet/wallpaper/paint samples). 4. Wood flooring could be laid first then top with large fun area rugs. And lastly ... 5. It's temporary - you can change it out any time.

That view outside is fantastic. I agree on the carpet. But it does help somewhat with noise. One thing I find with carpet is find the color you like and toss some dirt on it. It it does not show that much then it good for kids. If it shows really bad then for a different color/pattern.

I know this is an older video. But my grandfather built log cabins. Often people wanted a loft. Sound transference was a very common concern. How he resolved it is A) Suggests that to NOT build a loft, make it an entire floor. When someone is in loft, the whispers of a couple can be heard throughout to those below. The cost is very minimal to extend the floor to make it full floor level. B) If loft is still wanted then he would put in 2x's 2x6's, 2X8's, as the subfloor/flooring. This dampered the noise level. Thought I'd share.

We have a similar situation, with no sound insulation between floors. We have carpet in the hallway and our bedroom, the kids rooms have vinyl plank. They're a little older, and their rooms are smaller, so less running around. The hallway was the loudest and carpet made a big difference. Hardwood would look better, but after living with unfinished plywood for 10 years, carpet is just fine, downright cozy in fact.

Sorry Ana, I know you wanted internet hugs but I gotta say YOU were right! You should've put in hardwood floors and IF YOU HAD TO, then put down padding and carpet on top of them TEMPORARILY while the kids were growing up until they got beyond the jumping off the loft phase of their lives. Just sayin... But since you two are who you are, you can always rip it out someday and put in the floors you shoulda put in in the first place... Definitely a sad day, but I guess Hubby needs to get it his way once in awhile, LOL!
@steverolfeca

Carole Warner: Having owned houses with carpet over hardwood, I disagree. Bad things happen to the finish on the hardwood while it's under the carpet. Better to wait until the kids move out, then lay the hard flooring of your choice.

Good point. My line of work is alternative medicine and I see so many allergies and so much asthma these days. Carpet is THE WORST for folks with any kind of allergies or respiratory issues and frankly, it's impossible to really clean them once their down. Dirt, dust & mites accumulate despite rigorous efforts. It's just the nature of carpet. Anyway, I understand why they did it. Carpet really does help reduce sound transmission through a floor. We have an apartment upstairs that we rent out and about a year ago we changed the great room flooring from carpet to vinyl for sanitary reasons. Now it's quite loud both for us and our renters above. We knew it might be a problem, but were surprised just how much. Now we're having to tear out our lath & plaster ceilings on the main floor to put in Roxul sound insulation. The plaster in our nearly 100 year old ceilings was cracking badly and starting to sag in some places though, so we had to deal with that soon anyway. So now when we tear them out we'll just add the insulation before sheet rocking it to resolve the issue.

Carpet will only encourage the kids by making them think that the floor is soft, but it won't protect them from injury much more than hardwood. You could put padding under hardwood. You could put area rugs in strategic places. I hate carpet, but it certainly makes more sense in Alaska than in Florida.

We have replaced the carpet with hardwood in one and will follow with another next year. Ironically, when our second son moved out, we replaced the carpet with hardwood in his room as it was to become my wife's studio. Six months later he moved back in! Fortunately nobody has laid claim to my woodworking shop!

Ana, focus on the positive when making compromises such as carpet. It will help reduce noise and insulate. I don't like carpet as well for several reasons but, in a cold climate....I would have it in the bedrooms. ;) p.s. big hug comin' your way!

big hug to you! I hope its not as bad as you're thinking. I like it in the bedroom but love slate and hardwood floors in the rest of the house.

I feel for you. We have a house built in the 1840;s and not one single loop of carpet has ever touched these wood floors. Well except the stairs but when we bought the house first thing happened was we got RID OF IT! 3 boys and wood floors = happy momma

I know! I have hardwood floors up & downstairs. Pulled the carpet to utilise the original floor. I don't know what was worse, the noise from upstairs or the general coldness seeping in. ( its an old house, no underfloors) Ended up having to recarpet the upstairs hall & bedrooms. Don't be sad, you'll get used to it, and there are worse things than cosy carpeted bedrooms. But here's a hug anyway ..... cause i know how disappointing it is :)

The house is so beautiful, even with the carpet--and it's temporary! You can always change it, right? 😉 I cannot wait for the outdoor chair plans! I can't wait to make them!

Thanks for sharing. Your stairs are really looking great. Hopefully you can permanently fix in those stairs spindles I guess the carpeting is useful soundproofing, and also protection for your precious wood, and it makes for a safer landing when doing cartwheels.

I love, love, love my laminate tile! Would not go back to wood flooring or ceramic tile. Carpeting? OMG, NO! NEVER AGAIN!

Nothing is permanent! Soon they'll be old enough to change those out to beautiful hardwood! We have a similar problem but our floors are brick and I have a loft and two under two. The brick floors are so hard on their little knees and heads that we put rugs down. I'd rather frequent cleaning and replacing to busted heads and damaged knees.

I think you'll be happy you went with the carpet, when the kids are playing up a storm. Also, when the kids grow up and move out, you can install new flooring and get some beautiful new rooms to cheer you up. And by that time, the kids will be old enough to help you rip out the carpet and lay the new floor :D

I, too, despise carpet. But I think y'all were right to put it in the kids' rooms. At least it's not permanent. And you can replace it with whatever your heart desires when you're ready.
