This video will show you how to recover your phone from problems with Windows 10 Tech Preview or other issues that result in loss of function.
DISCLAIMER: This can mess up your phone for good! Follow all instructions to minimize the chance of damage. NEVER install Windows 10 Tech Preview (or any beta OS) on your main phone.
This is about the 5th time I've had to use the recovery tool to fix a phone that Windows 10 Tech Preview messed up. I've used the tool on a Lumia 521, 1020, 928, and 1520.

I am so glad to run into this video on Lumia. I followed the instruction and my phone is now back in operation. I am surprised that none Nokia or MS had clear understanding of problem or solution as simple as this. Thanks a million............

This is great. Just one thing to add... if you find the phone still can't be detected, then try a different (hi-speed) USB cable. I was getting frustrated that the recovery tool still couldn't detect the device but after changing the cable, hey-presto... Hope this helps... (Also, be sure to click to install the software before the phone restarts on it's own, otherwise it will go back to the sad face again. If this happens, just restart the process and try again)

gr8 help thanks a lot...one thing i would like add is that after downloading if someone encounter issue like phone not detecting just close the tool and open it again and start the process all over again it doesn't require downloading again and everything will be fine

What software is your laptop? Is the software you're installing on the device the one on your laptop? I use W10 on my laptop , will the device work since it got bricked due to the induced upgrade of W10?

Usually there’s a problem with a firmware trying to overwrite the existing files with an updated version of those files. The problem can be it has been stopped during the process of writing files to the system, causing the files to be corrupted or missing. If you find the sad face, the update has failed and that can be because the update file(s) that are needed to update the software are missing. Leaving the system both unbootable and impossible to update without using a PC.

yes, it should take you back to Windows Phone 8. depends on the available packages.

Thanks, God bless you! After finishing receiving data by using this tool, I still have a trouble about connection. Please calm down and not move the cab, not click 'cancel' but try to click the button 'try' (I don't remember exactly). We can got it :3

i have exactly the same issue and god knows how much i waited for the package to download(shitty internet) but the part when it comes "installing the software" the phone unplug itself automatically and an error message appears saying that the operation has failed! any solution? i tried with 3 different cables and nothing changed!

+iheb saidani Hi i did it last night and it worked. Actually, yes we get that error msg again and again but keep click on "try again" and move till it complete it downloading thing. Once it's done it will install it and works. So idea is keep on clicking "try again" and wait till it complete.

Hi there! I'm experiencing a similar issue, my new Lumia 950 Dual SIM (less than a month old) is in a never ending reboot loop... I've done everything I could to fix it, including the use of the Device Recovery Tool, but when I'm going through the initial settings, the loop starts again. I'm outside the country with no guarantee support at all... I need to know if there's something I can do to have my phone back. Thanks!

If it's less than a month old I would return it. Buy a cheap phone to hold you over and wait for a replacement or repair. You could try the recovery tool again.

Hi, nice video, actually my lumia 540 is restarting again and again and stays on boot screen, and my laptop/any other laptop or pc is not detecting my phone now "Device not Recognized" :( can you tell me what i should do?

The only thing I know is keep trying. Have phone connected and try a hard re-boot of the phone, it may be picked up by the computer just long enough for the app to pick it up.

+Loic Caserne Sorry, the only solution I know of besides sending the phone in to Nokia/Microsoft, is to use the Recovery Tool.

I don't know what to tell you other than keep trying, check your internet connection, try another internet source, check firewall, ect... there are too many possibilities for me to give you a solution without being in front of your system.

got it working... pushed vol down and the power button for about 10 sec while connected to the recovery tool and the software finally started downloading. thank you for responding! cheers

guys, try it multiple times with the windows phone recovery software. reinstall the software possibly. plug the phone in differently each time (status). maybe try it on another computer.

I got the sad face of doom on my one day old Lumia 550 and was about to throw the thing at a wall when I discovered your post. I now have a working phone that appears more stable and has picture messaging too. Before the boot my mms settings were wrong and couldn't be changed. Now mms is functional. I am stunned at how easy it was to follow your instructions and recover my phone. Thanks dude.
