Wow, thank you for providing so much information! This is really helpful . I’m learning that there are a LOT of saddle gimmicks out there, that prey on people’s desire to do right by the horse… but which are often harmful and end up costing people time and money. This was thorough and helps me cut through the din of the latest “innovations.”

I really like this video. I came to your demo due to my horse's saddle fit not working for him. The saddle hurts him. Because of his unusual behavioral problems, I have realized this. More and more, I have had to readjust the foam wedges that I finally bought to try out. It is getting better due to figuring out exactly where they need to be. It is trial and error. Thank you for building the awareness with your helpful video!

Yes, it's difficult to find a western saddle which is light weight. The design makes it very difficult to do.

This series was very helpful! I always wondered why in some saddles I had great balance and in others I’d have a hard time keeping my butt in the seat. I always thought it was just me. I’m also going to look into the sheep wool saddle pad, my saddle is always sliding around so I have to use a mounting block to get on. I understand how to communicate with horses but have never really learned anything about my tack. Thank you so much for this info I will continue to browse through your videos!

Watching your 3 part saddle fit videos has been immensely helpful, thank you! I have been able to filter out many of the saddles that I was originally researching and considering for myself. However there’s something that I wish you would have covered- what about the difference between a woman’s build of her seat vs a man’s build of his seat? Would you alter any of your recommendations for a female rider to accommodate her hip width and tilt since it’s different than a man’s?
@ltrocha
@ltrocha 5 лет назад
Hi, there is really no need to address a woman's build vs a man's build. Seat size is seat size. A good pocket is a good pocket. There's no distinction if the saddle is built right.

I find it interesting that the one point you made about treeless saddles is that the horses quit stopping - I am watching these videos because I bought a treeless last year, and though I initially loved it, am not happy with many things...one of which is that my horse is now struggling with stopping...I did not relate it to the treeless! Hoping to take the info learned here and get a good fitting treed saddle!

Thank you for a bunch of good information. I have asked countless saddle sellers and googled for years for information on saddle type and function. 2 questions though........ 1. I was wondering what you find more workable as far as the distance between the horn and your body is considered. (while sitting in the saddle.) 2. And also, when it comes to younger horses, what type of saddle and specs supports you the best if they try to blow off some stink? Thanks again for sharing your experience.
@jimmyyounger618
@jimmyyounger618 2 года назад
"...when it comes to younger horses ... if they try to blow off some stink?" Good question. I'd love to know Larry's take on this. I haven't been on a green horse in a good number of years, but have this persistent interest in starting a colt despite being way past that age that we bounce and roll pretty well. I used a roughout cutting saddle last time around. For sure, I'd stick with a roughout seat because we're quite a bit stickier on a roughout than a slick seat. I had imagined I'd go for a grip on that tall horn if needed, if perhaps we moved into a 'Blope,' which we did. (Moving from a trot into a lope where the horse blows up: Blope.) But, I was so focused on keeping both stirrups and the one rein stop that I never got around to grabbing the horn and doubt I'd have reached for a night latch if I'd had one. I stayed on and it was over soon enough. Since then, a saddle that keeps coming to mind with my thoughts about another colt is one I saw a trainer using on colts - a fairly tight fitting roughout barrel saddle with custom bucking rolls.

Most informative saddle fitting guide I've seen...Thanks! I too had a low heel one side and club foot other side and in addition to farrier using wedges to raise the heel on low hoof and reversed the wedge to raise the toe we got them back to normal over 6-8 months. However observations of her grazing I noticed that she would always extend the original low heel hoof out and stand with club foot directly under her. This caused the issue to again be a problem. I solved this issue by using hobbles on her when grazing. Also, I've tried 5 saddles on my 5 year old and they all rock front to back. I use 1/8" layers of felt under the bar pads to minimize the rock. Do you think at 5 my horses back will develop more curve along the spine?
@ltrocha
@ltrocha 3 года назад
Hi Kevin, It's difficult to say how your horse's back will change. I do know this... my horse chiropractor played a significant part in fixing the asymmetrical horses I had in training. Corrective shoeing was a big part but without the chiropractic part to go with it, I'm not sure it would have worked out. Keep in mind, most horse chiropractors are not the real deal. Contact your local professional horse trainers and ask which chiropractors they use.
@ltrocha
@ltrocha 3 года назад
Don't be surprised if a "qualified" chiropractor advises you to use a spacer pad on bi-lateral foot.

Hi Larry. Have watched all 3 saddle videos 3 times. I love my saddle except it is heavy, 35lbs, no Cheyenne roll and the stirrups are too far back. I would like to get a five star barrel or reining saddle but how do I know which one will fit my horse. And which one is the lightest weight. Smokey, horse, is about 1000lbs appendix quarter. My saddle is a lichtenberger/ferguson, Los Angeles makers. Made for my grandfather in 1920. Yes I'm riding that saddle now. It is very comfortable, easy to stay with the horse no matter what he does. I'm 5' 8" weigh 150. I'm a senior schooling this horse for ranch reining, ranch riding and trail. Only had him 16 months. I have learned so much from you. Thank you for your videos.

Good series very common sense, One thing I found was your saddle can fit close but if you put a 25mile day of hard riding on rough terrain gathering cows , roping and treating cattle your horse may get sore but it doesn't mean the saddle is trash.

FYI...Bridge pads...never used one per say but have used 1/8" felt to build up to the thickness needed and lesser layers to feather it out for maximum contact. I use 3M spray adhesive to hold in place and have never seen slippage from where I put them.

Very helpful and informative, thank you. I've heard good things about the Visalia 3B tree's regarding how well horses move in them, they're often referred to as all day saddles. My horses both get dry spots, but not to the extent of being 100% dry. Like, if they were soaked from sweat, the “dry spot” is just very slightly dryer than the rest of the back. Also the dry spots are big as well.

Larry, thank you for so useful information, know how and experience transmitted in these 3 videos. One question about pads… I've been using pads which has rubber on the horse's contact part. I think it is very confortable, hygienic, easy to wash and disinfect, in case of using on more than one horse. Any comments on them?
