Saddleworth in the Sixties is an album of photographs taken by Colin Fox who was a keen local amateur photographer. The images present us with a marker as to how much has changed in the last fifty years.
Lovely picture of your dad at the end there Peter. Bought back lots of memories for me but sad to see all the areas built over where we used to picnic. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it - I share your view - used to live at Heathfields Cottages in Uppermill before Springmeadow was built on and had green fields all the way to Pots and Pans
Wow! That picture of fletchers paper mill all painted up green and looking in great condition is a surreal sight for me, considering the condition it was in last October when I broke in and took photographs!
I grew up in an old cotton town in East Lancashire, My folks left North London for a better standard of living,up north, Blackburn became our new home, and so glad it was, grew up there in this era, 1960's, I had never heard of Saddleworth, Not until those infamous child murders, were splashed all over the television back in this time, Such a stark contrast when I see how beautiful the village was back then, That apart, I have nothing but fond memories of my time as a young boy in the 60's, I often think of those youngsters who were robbed of this opportunity !
Thanks for the memories" used to cycle from Higher Openshaw to Greenfield to a mountain called indians head aged 10 or 11. six of us, we had ourselves a convoy" hope all them mates are keeping well.
Lovely. I went to school in Uppermill in the late 70s -81. Lovely area. Lived in spring head and we were always out in the saddleworth area as kids and teens.
True think most of us wish not so much building was done , but I case you don’t know England pop is now 56 mill from 38 mill in 1950 . So we all do feel overcrowded as we would in a 3 bed house if we went from 3 to 5 persons ! Having wales and Scotland hides the fact of U.K. s overpopulation , I think it’s correct to say only 3 large nations are denser than us ! India about the same and Belgium and Bangladesh more so . None are particularly prosperous !
Sadly, the name Saddleworth in combination with the sixties, is for me forever sullied by the utter wickedness of Hindley and Brady. Looks like it was a lovely place though.
Saddleworth! Well as long as ya village didn't start with a 'D'! No pictures of Diggle, Dobcross, Delph or Denshaw, so not Saddleworth! Just Uppermill and Greenfield.
What a disappointment! Uppermill, Uppermill, Uppermill. Has the person who put this together never been to Saddleworth? Ok Greenfield got a mention but not one photo. of the rest of Saddleworth! Perhaps this should be renamed Uppermill in the sixties (with a few pics. of Greenfield)!
