Join me on an unforgettable adventure as I explore the breathtaking beauty of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. I have been wanting to visit this park my entire life, and the safari in Gorongosa lived up to my expectations!
Gorongosa is an incredible story, a once great park, with a higher animal density than any where else in Africa, that was devastated by poaching during the civil war in Mozambique, and is now on the come back!
In this bumper episode I spend 4 days exploring the park, going on daily game drives, and a bush walk. My brilliant guide Castro gives me an insight into the complex environmental project that is underway in the park.
I hope you all enjoy the episode, and let me know if you enjoy the longer format?
Tim Hulme

Muito obrigado Vasco, english translation of your interesting comment. I knew Gorogosa before the civil war, and I know how devastated it was afterward. The recovery work done, thanks to the commitment of the philanthropist Greg, and the entire team involved, is a good example that should be followed by some African countries, namely Angola, which suffered, and still suffers, the devastation of its valuable faunal heritage, more sustainable for future generations than oil or diamonds. Congratulations to the Author, for promoting this magnificent renaissance.

In the mid 1960's we went on an Italian cruise ship "THE AFRICA " from Cape Town to Beira and LM. My dad had to get special permission for me to join a group from the ship which travelled in 2 mini vans to Gorongosa. Special permission because the war was on between Portugal and the commies.I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. We saw lions at a kill and pulled up next to a huge bull elephant. The Portuguese driver opened the drivers side window and clapped his hands infront of the elephant. I still hear the Italian nurse from the ship yelling "MAMA MIA " at this.. After the war most of the animals in Gorongosa were slaughtered. Lets hope they are allowed to make a recovery.

Great video Tim. I first visited Gorongosa in 1973 when I was a student at UCT. We drove up from Cape Town in a VW Beetle and camped. We did plenty of self drives and were amazed by the huge numbers of hippos. We saw lions in the Lion House. The war was raging so we were lucky to be there. I next visited in 2013. Fortunately we were still able to do self drives then. The game numbers were tiny compared with my visit in 1973. However, it was great to see the rebuilding work going on. The birding was excellent. Keep up the wonderful videos.

Reassurring and pleasing to see this ecosystem slowly recovering in the 21st century after the long chaos of 20th century war. A major step forward for Mozambique and African wildlife.. Where next? ...South Sudan perhaps?
