“Safari ya Bamba ni machero” (The journey to Bamba is tomorrow) is an old Giriama childhood song, sang by children when they gather in the evening as they await their supper.
Though innocently sang, it’s a song that preinforms that if one wishes to travel to Bamba, you must be adequately prepared both psychologically and physically because the journey to Bamba is not for the faint. It requires both stamina and determination.
Indeed the journey ahead of us isn't smooth but with perseverance and determination, we shall reach there and be proud we did!!

Wow, such an amazing song. The song is literally about a road that was rough and would take one long hours to reach their destination situated in the coastal part of Kenya. Today, the road is well constructed and it has been easier for the citizens to travel safely without struggles as before. From this folk song from the Giriama people, the Kenyan government was forced to improve the infrastructure in that specific place called 'Bamba' and change history about that road. Great transformation!

I was the Director of Choral Activites at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton Kenya from 1986-92 and we sang this wonderful arrangement. This is a great performance with a well focused choral tone, clear diction and a balance among the parts that allows you to hear the well written counterpoint. This performance brings back many memories that I have of my time in beautiful Kenya. Thank you so much for sharing.

Lovely to see the Ghanaian choir absolutely largely nailed it.. This is a folksong amongst the Giryamas of Kenyan coast near the city of Mombasa. A musical community. Bamba Town was a major trading market in those early days, with famous market and auction days...the terrain was unforgiving and journey audacious. Hence one had to plan well for the journey often a day earlier..."Safari ya Bamba ni machero.." Journey to Bamba is (will commence) tomorrow..." Today, the phrase is used amongst the peoples of the Giryamas to teach and warn people that: "One must prepare well today for tomorrow's activities/journey"...
