How do you deal with the low-pressure switch shutting the compressor down (before full pump down) when the pressure drops.Your videos are excellentThanks

I will have another video showing how soon but in the mean time, on a condensor, you just jump the 24v hot wire directly to the contactor instead of through the pressure switches with the common as the path back, thanks

Good to stress caution when (if) starting a motor with a screwdriver. On the outside chance the windings are grounded there can be a tremendous amount of energy in the form of a fireball in the vicinity of your hand. Don't do it fellows unless you absolutely have to. Tip from an old motor guy.

When the unit gets to a low amount of gas, won’t it shut down? How else will you pull the remaining gas into the unit if it’s not running unless you manually push in the contactor?

Is there a risk of overpresurizing the condenser coil with this method? Can you blow out the coil, or cause problems for the compressor itself? Also, I really love this channel, you have a real gift for explanation, and a mastery of the subject matter, thank you for the effort.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
Thanks Stacen. If you don't have microchannel coils then you have enough room in the condensor coils for the refrigerant on air conditioners. On refrigerators that have a receiver then you can pump the refrigerant in there, thanks

Another great video and learned something new from you as always. Just a quick question, Is heatpump always default to the heat mode when the contactor was pressed down manually or it will run whatever mode it was last time called for?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 лет назад
Typically if the unit is not Ruud Rheem or WeatherMaker then the reversing valve would be in heating mode when not powered by the tstat or in cooling mode when powered by the tstat, thanks!
@megalomani4k
@megalomani4k 2 года назад
Isn't there some sort of low pressure safety that shuts the outdoor unit off? Or does the t-stat somehow bypass that?
@jasons626
@jasons626 11 месяцев назад
This is why on a heat pump I do set the stat to cooling to energize reversing valve but still manually push in the contactor.

I have been watching a lot of your videos as I am trying to understand how mini split heat pump systems work. I have been trying to find an answer to a what happened question. I know what I am about to write will have most ask why anyone would do this, but I was blindly following instructions from a company rep and this accident occurred simply due to a lack of knowledge on both sides. Anyhow, Mini Split, heat pump, rotary compressor, operating in heat mode. Liquid line closed, compressor begins to work harder and harder (can tell by sound it is producing), about 30 seconds in a loud but very quick burst/hiss sound erupts from inside the outdoor unit, suction line was closed and unit powered off. No visible damage inside outdoor unit. In that situation as it was clear that the compressor was working harder and harder, is there some type of relief valve or was that noise most likely the reversing valve moving itself to protect the system?

Is it safe for the compressor on a Goodman (Copeland) 410a heat pump to pump down. It seems there would certainly be enough room in the accumulator but I've watched a couple of videos that mention that it might not be recommended with 410A and/or a scroll compressor.

Is it legal to pump down an AC unit. It seems like I remember reading the EPA rules that you have to recover to a recovery tank
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
We pump down in order to use the unit again. It makes more work for us to recover this back at the shop before disposal. Typically recovery at the site is best if you are disposing the unit, thanks
@randallcalhoun6604
@randallcalhoun6604 6 лет назад
what are your thoughts on pump downs on scroll compressors? some say dont do it into a vac etc. also i have had some compressors that wouldnt pump down. they made a noise internally that sounded like a relief valve. I havent found good info on if it was internal relief vs just a bad compressor. the one i can think of specifically would pump down to 40 psig then make a noise and go to 70 psi and no further. thanks for insights. good vids/channel
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
Hey Randall, yeah on some older compressors, the pump down won't work because the internal pressure relief has become weak over time. Hermetic compressors use refrigerant and oil to cool and lubricate so when we are lower in pressure, it is not the best for the compressor. Some compressors are meant for this such as a pump down refrigeration unit. If the relief blows then just close the valves and then shut the unit off. You can pump down a scroll, just don't let it go into vacuum too far, thanks Randall!
@randallcalhoun6604
@randallcalhoun6604 6 лет назад
so if you find a compressor that will not pump down, that blows internal relief, is this an indication of faulty compressor? i had one that did this and had poor capacity to boot. all other things were normal. temp drop across coil was only 10degrees. cant remember pressures off the top of my head.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
It doesn't mean that the compressor is bad unless it is happening during normal operation on a very hot day. This component is off by itself inside the compressor housing and is separate from the compressor itself, thanks!

Should a unit has receiver for you can do pumpdown, or any AC unit can do pumpdown? What's the benefit to do pumpdown and recovery? Thanks
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 лет назад
Pump down is done if you are going to use the outdoor unit again. Recovery is done if you are replacing the outdoor unit or the whole system. A pump down can be done on ac units that do not have a receiver as well, thanks!

Hi acservice tech, Great videos and presentation (hell of a teacher I'd say). Can you tell me if the refrigerant in the liq/suc gauge hoses are ALSO sucked into the compressor in this pump down process. My guess is yes, correct? Also, in this and a few other videos you refer to "a certain brand" unit commonly having the low pressure switch standard, so which is the "certain brand", can you say?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
Yes before performing a pump down, make sure to purge the air out of the hoses or air will get sucked in and mix with the refrigerant. In reference to certain brands, I meant higher efficiency, or more expensive models but all manufacturers have them but only on the model units that have all the bells and whistles. Cheaper standard units do not have the low pressure switch. Heat pumps often have a low pressure switch in them. Make sure to jump the low pressure switch before performing a pump down, thanks bobrub!

Is it physically impossible to do a pump down in heat mode ? You could store all the liquid in the indoor condenser and the liquid return line to outdoor unit. You could then fix a leak etc on the outdoor unit. Please advise. Thanks michael
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
The problem is the reversing valve being powered or not powered as well as having access to the ports for a vacuum afterf fixing the component, thanks

Quik question i am a hvac tech at a university in Texas been there for 8 years and i just passed my texas hvac b license where can i get a up to date price book?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 лет назад
Are you talking for hvac equipment and supplies? If so, you would need to set these up with individual vendors and you would either fall into a certain pricing or you would have to agree upon a certain pricing. Usually there are 4 tiers depending on how much you buy. I operate on the premis that is you set me up with good pricing from the get go then you have established a great relationship. If I have to work to build my pricing then I do not like that too much but to some extent they would need to reward those who buy more frequently. If you mean something else just let me know, thnaks!

Is it ok to run the indoor fan while vacuuming the entire system ?
@acservicetechchannel

Yes, it would help if there were moisture in the system. Make sure the compressor is not running though. You don't have to run the indoor fan but it certainly helps if you suspect water in the lines, thanks

and the purpose of performing a pump down, trapping the refrigerant on the outside coil is in lieu of performing a service?? What kind of service?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
If you need to replace the evap, lineset, filter drier, or metering device. Most new units come with refrigerant already in the outside unit. It would be like that. You don't want to have to recover it and vacuum that part of the system too if you can just put the refrigerant in that location of the system, thanks
@omarrc9628
@omarrc9628 6 лет назад
gotcha!!
@charlieparker5678
@charlieparker5678 6 лет назад
So after pumping down successfully, you don't have to recover any refrigerant???
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 лет назад
If you do it well enough and run the indoor fan while doing it, you have the chance to not have to recover the refrigerant because the pressure in the lines does not rise above 0. You have to keep heat on the refrigerant by running the indoor fan during the process though, thanks

What do you do if the low pressure switch cuts condenser off before it reaches 0 psig?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 лет назад
Hey David, you are right. You would need to look to check for that first and if you did find a low pressure switch then you would need to turn the power off and jump the 24v low pressure switch wire out with alligator clips or just connect the 24v power wire directly to the contactor instead of going through the switch. Most basic units will not have these unless we are dealing with a specific brand but yes check for that first on the suction line. I just want everyone to be safe whenever possible and also the indoor airflow really helps to get an accurate pressure reading, Thanks David!
@ddcws1
@ddcws1 7 лет назад
acservicetech That actually happened to me. We were relocating the condenser and it shut off around 50 psig I didn’t know what to do so I just recovered the remaining refrigerant. That would be a good video to see. How to either jump it out with alligator clips or straight through contactor. I really enjoyed this video! Thanks Craig!

totally wrong cause all condensers have hp/lp safety valves that prevent high head pressure and one that shuts down the unit when it reaches a lp to protect compressor and system. so using thermostat doesn't do the job as contactor. facts
