Safely Lifiting a 4000lb Wall

We like to build walls as big as we can to eliminate ladder/scaffolding work later. In this case we have a 44' long wall with siding on the gable. Total weight was about 4000lbs. While its safer to do the work on the ground, it is still dangerous to lift the wall.
Our process for framing the wall can be found in the links below. Get rigging certified and forklift operator training. There are some large accounts here on RU-vid that show unsafe rigging and lifting. Invest in your understanding to do this safely.
Thanks for watching.
Please remember, I’m not showing the best way of doing something, just what works well for us.
Oh if you use a drone for commercial work, you need to be part107 certified. Commercial work includes social media like RU-vid if you plan to make an income off of that. I watched a video about this last May and then purchased the Part 107 Course sso.teachable.... I studied and learned for 1 month and then took my test. I scored a 95%, which is a testament to how good Greg and the crew over there teach. That link will save you $100 off the course and support this channel.

I know you talked about the micro burst damageing your wall, I remember a couple examples where I live in Kansas. One was a friend of mine that's a builder. He was building his own house, that was a single story slab on grade. He had framed and erected all the walls. Had them braced, no roof yet or wall sheeting. During the weekend a severe storm with 70mph winds blew through. The winds sheered some of the bracing, causing his whole house to blow about 30 degrees off true. He was able to push them back true and plumb, and finish his house. The other one was a commercial building. They had all the walls framed. And the roof up and covered. However no panels on the wall. This was a regular framing with metal wall and roof panels. Of course a storm blew through, I can't remember if they still had bracing up or not. But long story short the whole building collapsed, luckily the storm was at night so no one was around. Had to tear it all down and do it again.

Yes! This is the way my dad would do in (Left Aerospace engineering) to become a GC in Lake Arrowhead..... we installed the window frames, all exterior trim, etc.- 3 guys are all it took... and never dropped a wall! The longest wall we ever stood up was 60 foot long- he did bring in 2 additional guys just to watch and install the stabilizers. We did use a chain instead of a strap but as long as they're rated for the load and inspected before each lift- you are good to go!

Last summer me and 10 guys lifted by hand a gable wall that was 20 feet wide. the peak was at 27ft. We used 2x6 braces that started at 1 ft long, and we kept cutting new ones a foot longer until it was up pretty high. At which point we made 5 long braces by connecting 2 2x6 together and nailing them to the king studs in the windows near the top. Then we prayed to god and lifted it off the braces 😅. We actually got stuck for a second and started to lose grip but then everyone's adrenaline kicked in realizing we could all get squashed right now. I realized we were exerting energy at different times and that's why we were at a stand still. I started counting to 3 outlook to concentrate our energy at the same time and it started going up. 😅😅 All in all it took about 4 hours to stand the wall up . Raising the last bit took about 60 seconds.

with Rigging and Lifting, there's only one way, and that's the right way...there isn't an option #2...and please reinforce the golden rule...NEVER EVER STAND UNDER A LOAD...stay safe guys and always stick to the rule book 🙏

Our crew says the same thing. Slow and steady gets things up safely. I always run the machine and one guy signals me. Tim's videos are amazing, and he has sold us on using the timber locks on longer braces for walls like this. Years ago, sure 5, 6 gun nails was just fine. Now we are in our mid 40s, been working with my mt cousin, and our buddy for 15 yrs(same as you and Kyle). We started timber locking all our longer gable braces a couple yrs ago, then just went full on timber lock pretty much all wall braces these days. Easier to take down, great piece of mind that everything is fine overnight in the event of wind. Thanks for another

I can only say what's in your description, "please remember, I'm not showing the best way of doing something, just what works for us.".. I have years of learning to go, never claimed to be the best, or even good for that matter, my apologies if I've stroked you wrong. Link to the yellow pick points you've got on top plate? Wouldn't mind picking a few up!

Hey Matt, good to hear from you. Please don't take anything I said in the video as personal towards you. It just my 43 years and many near misses speaking :-) Lots of younger guys on social looking to improve and there is a lot of risky stuff out there. I'm just getting more cautious as I get older. Your voice is a very important one, keep up the good work. I love working in the trades and have never suffered an injury (beyond stitches here and there) and no one on my crew has. I'm just pushing the safety narrative more. We want younger guys/girls to come into framing, you make it look cool, and that's important. It is cool. Email me Tim@awesomeframers.com if you don't mind. I'll dig up the info on the wall brackets I've got. I'd put it here but there are some caveats to using them specific to the state I live in. I'll get that info together for you.

@@AwesomeFramers I learn new things every day, only way I can grow, I'll shoot you an e-mail. I've been subscribed to you here on YT, learned a lot from following you on IG prior to 2020. Definitely taking info said in the video towards me, as it's an area I've known for years I can improve in, no shame from me there.

Just had to rebuild a 40x60 honey extraction building. Got the whole thing framed walls stood I'll be it not as safely as we should. Put the trusses in place and laid labs. Left it for 2 days as a tropical storm was coming in. Woke up to find a 40x60 pad piled with wood rubble about 6ft high; twisted and imploded under the immense pressure

They were custom engineered for us and I had a local fabricator make them.

I enjoy the videos. I was a framer for many years. Now I do personal injury law. I noticed that the gables are not framed with the rafters in the wall. I would always frame a small gable (or large gables) with long studs going from the plate to the rafter and notching the studs around the rafter. I have also noticed your way of framing the gable in other framing videos on youtube. Is this a standard way of framing gable ends now? Thanks in advance for your input

I would have appreciated it if you would have detailed how you fasten bottom plate in place.... seems like a lot of force angles for regular 3" toe nails.
@KoiAquaponics
@KoiAquaponics 3 года назад
I'm a little confused, I thought the bottom plate of the wall has to be slotted into anchors into the footing? I dont see that here.
@AwesomeFramers

Good question Wang. We are framing on top of a crawl space, so the mudsill below in the joist cavity is bolted to the foundation. Feel free to ask questions anytime, I'll try and do my best to answer.

What do you use to fix the bottom of the wall before lifting, surely otherwise the wall slips

Only thing I didn't like is the angle of the straps as you start lifting. The straps could have slid the wall out.

How do you keep the toe board from sliding out while doing the lift?
@AwesomeFramers
@AwesomeFramers 3 года назад
All we do is toe nail our bottom plate to the line and then frame the wall. We rig for the full weight of the wall + safety factor in the event it pops off. Often we want it to pop off, but here we didn't. It all has to do with the angle of the lift. If you boom in too far the strap will be putting pressure on the wall towards the forklift, or if you have the boom too far extended past the pic points the opposite will happen. So basically watch the straps and make sure they don't get too steep, but keep them less than 45 degrees from vertical.

does anyone remember a framing channel on youtube that was active in the early 2010's based in the PNW that would build everything while the wall was down and then raise it with a telehandler (even 3 stories up)? I can't remember what they were called and when I try to search for it it's like youtube's erased it from existence
