Safety by the Numbers - FAA 16mm Training Film (1969)

Another FAA mini soap drama about a business man who upgrades from single to multi engine flying and made to realize the importance of knowing the aircraft numbers and even the importance of knowing your left from your right in an urgent situation. Lots of lessons to be learnt here.
This film features actor Richard Simmons who portrayed Sergeant Preston of the Yukon (TV Series 1955--1958).

Blows my mind when I see people flying without headsets, I can't imagine having to shout over the noise of the engine! Great video, thanks for uploading.

Max points out landmarks along the way. 6:00 "There's that new national seashore at Point Reyes." 7:40 "Hey, that's Cape Mendocino already!" Taking a look at the numbers: Point Reyes to Cape Mendocino - 186 miles 1 min, 40 sec = 0.02777777 hr 186 mi/0.02777777 hr = 6,696 mph That 310 sure can move!

The first pilot we see is Warren Stevens, who appeared in "Forbidden Planet", the Star Trek episode "By Any Other Name" and a ton of other stuff. It was his voice that clued me in. And I'm pretty sure that the opening scenes were shot at Sierra Sky Park just outside Fresno. It was the very first "fly-in" community in the world.

The FAA films used a lot of character actors from that period. There are a lot of familiar faces from 1960s television shows. Unfortunately these types of films included no ending credits. I kept hoping Virginia Gregg would show up in one of these films. Didn't happen.

I think you would know which engine was out immediately. You would hear it, see it and the yaw would be evident. God help you in single-pilot IFR at night at 200 feet. The problem here is you don't really have time to verify and all that. Shouldn't you feather that prop immediately after the flaps and gear are up?

@ 25:50 Is that legal .?..The PIC stated earlier "in my instructor days" meaning no longer current I suspect, yet giving lessons to a newbie on a twin.
@2degreewca
@2degreewca 5 лет назад
Yep, legal but he can't put that time in a logbook. My private pilot certificated high school buddy let me "fly" left seat in his dad's Tri-Pacer. I got to where I could land the thing, sort of. But it didn't count when it came to meeting flight time requirements for any sort of certificate. But it was great fun and I luckily didn't have to unlearn anything useless or harmful when I started actual flight training.
