First thing first, this radio got super hot on the battery external dots used for charging while I had the transmit button depressed. I had my hand wrapped around the radio and was touching those dots while transmitting and it got really hot. If you want to jump straight to that part its right around 22 minutes into the video when I was in Austin, TX.
Now as far as the regular video description I am trying out the TidRadio HT called the H8 which is a 10w HT for amateur radio and it was donated to me by TidRadio for the purposes of doing a review on it. It has an internal bluetooth programmer so you can program repeaters on the fly from different locations. My first use will be at my QTH in Colorado and then I will head to Austin, TX and program in some local repeaters near Austin using the OdMaster APP and the internal programmer to write those local repeaters to the radio.
Good, bad, or indifferent lets see what happens.

It seems to be kind of hit or miss with radios. I’ve had to send back well over a dozen of my Motorola radios because of emissions. But I have several that have never had any problems. It’s not so much the manufacture. It seems to be more than individual radios. Oh and by the way, I absolutely love my TID Radio, H8 and my H3 awesome little radios. They tested better than my expensive radios. I can’t believe it!

Yeah it seems that they repaired the problem shortly after I made this initial video and then they sent me a 2nd version radio and the issue seems to be gone. There was both a software and firmware update as well as a different battery hardware change. @@Ham-SoloThey initially had some spurious emission issues as well according to one review I watched, but they fixed that also in the newer version. They sent that guy out a new battery at first to see if that fixed the issue, so they must have been made aware of the problem with the battery at that point. Seems they've fixed it up to meet the legal emissions standards in the UK now anyway

Good review, and beautiful scenery. The H8 HT putting out 10 Watts and possible RF exposure is a bit scary. Without a perfect antenna to fully radiate the power, the power has to go _somewhere,_ such as the user’s hand via the battery contacts. All other things being equal, 10 Watts is only 1/2 an S unit stronger at the receive site versus 5 Watts. Sometimes 1/2 an S unit is the difference between opening squelch and being heard in an emergency versus a receiver staying muted. It is great to have the extra output capability, but using it sparingly is probably a good idea.
@Ham-Solo

I agree. Someone commented they used a better antenna and their problem went away. I’m still gathering data and working with TidRadio for a solution so more to follow. Ham-Solo K0FYR

Are you sure the battery is what's getting hot? The heat sink of this radio is the entire length of the radio, and the battery recesses into this heat sink. I use mine on mid power, and only use Hi power if I really need it. So far I've had no issues involving a lot of heat.
@Ham-Solo

They seemed to have a short in the battery or RF back feeding through the terminals. They changed batteries and did firmware update and that eliminated the problem. This was many months ago so see my updated videos on the TidRadio after this. Thanks Ham-Solo K0FYR

I have their H5 released under the Baofeng BF-H5 label. I get almost 9 watts out of it. Fantastic battery life. However, the USB-C port is just a "hole" in the side of the radio. There's a sale on the H6s right with two batteries and other accessories on Amazon (Under 45 bux)....Wondered however if I should get the H8 OR even the H3 (OR BOTH) instead? (Unlocking the H3) Having a blast with the Quansheng firmware options now.

@Ham-Solo
@Ham-Solo Год назад
It’s possible that due to the outside temperature and humidity in Austin and my own sweat was the cause for the rf burn that I got while holding the radio and touching those metal buttons on the back while transmitting. I plan to do some further testing to make sure. I hope you have better luck with yours. As far as it’s transmission capabilities it’s not that the FCC overlooked the capability it has to transmit in both space, (several radio brands can actually do that), it’s more that it was approved for one and they trust the user to do just the one. Great video!! The battery charge pads getting hot with RF is a real concern. I bought a gen2 TD-H8 on Amazon a few days ago and I'm returning it because in all of the radio checks I did, I was told that I had really low audio . The gen1 had that issue and I had heard the Gen2 addressed that. I was contacted by Tdiradio after I initiated the Amazon return, and was told that the ODMaster programmer can be used to change the mic gain setting from the factory. So I'm considering buying one again, but before I do that, can you confirm that there is a mic gain setting in ODMaster? Keep us posted on what becomes of the charging pads. Thanks and 73 de KN6VMK
