When soldiers came back from WWI and some of them got jobs in the construction business, they started to wear their war helmets to protect their heads from falling objects. That's how safety hard hat was born. Good job!

first patented hard hat was the hard boiled hat made from cheaper materials. I wear mine with pride every day I need to. The hard hat saved countless lives and I love mine. I actualy have the same model as the one the commentator describes. Hard hats have saved my life twice and i love it.

OSHA does not specify the service life of a hard hat, and there is no standard expiration time frame for hard hats. Hard hat life span may vary depending on the conditions of each work site. As a general guideline, most hard hat manufacturers recommend replacing hard hats every five years regardless of outside appearance. If you work under extreme conditions, such as exposure to high temperatures, chemicals, or sunlight, hard hats should be replaced after two years of use. In addition, some manufacturers even recommend replacing the suspension in your hard hat every 12 months. It's important to review each work site to ensure that degradation of employees' hard hats is not being accelerated due to work conditions.

This applies in a perfect world. And the company should be providing the hard hats when they expire.

I wear hard hard hats for my work in construction, and a wet helmet for kayaking. I can tell you the ABS plastic deteriorates super fast on my surf helmet. Sun, salt and plastics don't mix, I've had one crack so I buy a new helmet every year. I imagine the minerals from oil and sun would do the same.

I’m retired now but i did over 20 years in Commercial Construction and I’m willing to bet most people in Construction do not know most of the points you mention in the video I always wore mine as i know a family that lost a loved one from something falling from a Scaffold On a big job site it was a brick BTW and he had removed his hard hat prior to the incident Due to OSHA regulations most times workers cant or wont go without one plus hard hat technology has improved along with comfort thankfully

You make a comment about stickers masking any defects in the hard hat, but I understood it to be that the adhesive on the sticker can compromise the hard hat material. Same with marker pens, you should not write on the hard hat.

Its 5 years from the date you start using it, the manufacture date has nothing to do with it unless its being stored outside in the sun or in a container with out temperature control. You should never replace your hard hat at 6 months unless you have something impact it, this is per osha and msha. Im an iron worker and i work on mines from time to time and msha is so strict and this is what they teach in their classes

Interesting information. Thank you. I learned something new today that I can actually use. While not in your industry, I do work in confined areas (doesn't have potential of objects falling on me, but sharp object point into my work space) and I "hear and feel the vibration" to my hard hat as I it comes in contact with the wall, floors, connector bolts, etc. At the end of my day, I do inspect the exterior of the hard hat and see new "scratches" knowing that could have been my head. So far, I notice on scratches, no stress cracks or other deep indicators. I'm going to plagiarize and pass on, if you don't mind, your statement at 11:00 of "Make it your responsibility to look out for the safety and well being of others, because someone looked out for you when you first got started". Wise words. Maybe next video of the real world meaning of the different classes of hard hats? Class C, Class E ??

Okay. I ended up here because I was searching about bicycle helmets. Lol Interesting video. I learnt something new today. Even if I'm not a driller or ever will be one. ... Well who knows, I might apply as a company physician someday. So.... Do bicycle helmets follow the same?
@americandirectionaldriller6655

freerider37 bicycle helmets and motorcycle helmets both have a useful life. Snell rated motorcycle helmets are the most strict about useful life and replacement. Bicycle helmets are similarly constructed. Check the manufacturers website for specific product warranties and useful life. The issue is that the materials degrade over time: glues, foams, shells, straps, etc.

6 months to 2 years? why?
@americandirectionaldriller6655
Mark, Plastics degrade over time and become brittle. Sunlight and chemical exposure cause the timeframe to accelerate.

Good video I thought ANSI recommendation was 3 to 5 years for the shell Dose Texas osha say different
@americandirectionaldriller6655
@@mdjsimmer Thanks for the positive feedback. The point that I'm trying to make is that regardless of OSHA or ANSI, manufacturers have different timelines. Since hard hats have different grades, etc, they will react to sun exposure and chemical exposure in different ways. Best to refer to the manufacturer guidelines since they have to do the testing for their products.

American Directional Driller Absolutely good point I was just wondering if they have revised or changed anything and If per state osha if they have said anything The hard hats I have been recommending to companies is the 3m brand they are including a UV sticker to help identify when it should be replaced but that is just for UV rays not chemical exposures if you haven’t seen them you should check them out. Thanks agin Keep spreading your message I agree a lot of people don’t know
@americandirectionaldriller6655
@@mdjsimmer UV Stickers are a great product. Thanks for sharing!
