Hello from Australia! I really enjoy supporting smaller channels in the shaving community. The reviews are way more honest, and the wet traditional shave RU-vid seem very genuine, like geofatboy, SinatraLennon, Friendship Shaving, kevyshaves etc.

When I had developed an impressive neck-beard, Dad realized it was time to teach me to shave. But first, he took his old Safety razor, put in a new blade, and shaved off that disgusting neck-beard. Then he took his modern-day cartridge razor and taught me how to use that. Soon I had my very own, and that's what I've used for the last few decades of my life. Yeah, a Safety razor is more traditional. The blades are significantly cheaper than the multi-blade ones used on cartridge razors. And, admittedly, blade for blade; one from a Safety razor does a MUCH better job than one from a single-blade cartridge. Thing is, Dad took care of shaving that neck-beard off because even if he had shown me how to use his Safety razor, apparently he was worried I'd press in too hard and cause a literal bloody mess. It's just so much easier, faster and ironically safer to use a multi-bladed cartridge razor than an old Safety razor. Even though the latter cost much less to use in the long run. Significantly less.

I've been using a safety razor for a good 15yrs now. I wouldn't even think about going back to a cartridge style razor again. I started off using William's Mug soap, went to Arko shave sticks for years(I use it shaving my head only now)but my favorite is Cremo original scent shave cream with the red cap and a boar bristle brush with my Merkur 34C for my face. For my head I use Arko shave soap with The Leaf Razor and same bore bristle brush.

I've used safety razor almost two years and so far it's worked well for me. Cheaper, cuts better, less expensive, and i'd say generally more pleasant experience especially when compared to those cheaper single use razors I used of then. In here Finland Gillette cartridge pack what has only four heads costs nearly 13€... gross price since I get at best three shaves from one. I get at least four shaves from Bic made razor blade and 10 pieces cost me only 3€. Easy choice.

Great comparison. I started wet shaving in April 2022 after using either a cartridge or an electric razor for the past 40-plus years. I will never go back to a cartridge unless I have to use it for travel with carry-on luggage. I have limited gear that has been carefully chosen. My two favorite razors are the Karve Overlander - aluminum and the Henson AL 13 Mild. My favorite soap is Lothur. There is something very satisfying about making a lather and applying it to your face with a synthetic brush. I used to use shave gel but now that I have switched to a artisan soap, I realize that the gel was drying out my face. Other reasons for switching to a DE razor, besides a better shave, were to save money on blades and to use products that actually improve my complexion.

First 6 minutes, and we see and are told the difference. We understand this. The d. e. razor is obviously better than the disposable five-blade cartridge. Yet there are practical reasons why that disposable (Gillette Fusion -5) might be the better choice for specific purposes. Those could be, head-shaves. Some wet-shavers find headshaving more easily done, at least for short-enough growth time between shaves, with something like Gillette Fusion-5. The razor head pivoting, and the five blades are very helpful when doing a head shave.

There are soooo many people who use DE razors for head shaving. Thats not a good "reason". The only reason someone would want to use a cartridge razor over a DE is because they haven't figured out how to use a DE correctly. Only reason for disposable razors that I have is for shaving around public area. That is it.
@10floz30minutes
@10floz30minutes 10 месяцев назад
@@angelgutierrez5950 No. Not true. With short enough hair growth to remove, too many wet-shavers more easily use disposables for their headshaves, while D.E. razors (at least the ones they possess) are too inefficient. I already know, since having used both kinds. For face shaves, d.e. razors are just fine, and technique on the face is easier to achieve. The amount of hair growth if within one-week's time, does not much matter.

Just so your audience knows, since you mentioned Dollar General specifically, they can buy a Double Edge safety razor under the brand name Shavely's. DE blades, face/beard wash and a post shave moisturizer are also available under that brand name. The Shavely's razor is $7.50 and a 5 pack of DE blades $1.00. So, if subscribers don't want take a chance with the more expensive DE razor and/or order online; they have those options.

Very nice sir. I've been wet shaving for 10 years come Feburary 2024. So far my favorite DE razors are my Leaf, Twig and Thorn which uses half DE blades and my Henson AL13++ (medium). You can use the canned Barbasol with a shave brush. Just make sure that it's a synthetic brush so it does not absorb your shave cream and soak the brush prior to use just like you would with a proper shave soap or cream. My favorite blades are the Gillette Wilkinson Sword Saloon Pack which you can get a 100 pack for around $7 to $8 US Dollars give or take.

You too the absolute most efficient cartridge razor, and put it against one of the mildest safety razors and used one of the mildest blades on that mild razor. So the test was totally tilted to the fusion and you still see the advantages. I shave my entire head with a Karve safety razor with the most efficient plate and use a blade, the Perm Sharp that my skin loves and my head will not have any stubble. None. Smooth as a baby’s butt. Just not working for my skin & hair type.

There's definitely a learning curve there. Also some razors are more "mild" than others. It's all about blade exposure. Also some blades are more aggressive than others. Once you get your technique down you'll be able to shave about as fast and smoothly as with the cartridge razors. Good luck.

I love my defender razors. I pay 8.95 every two months for 4 cartridges and I change the blades every two weeks. It's great for my needs which are bald head shave and face. I feel its very economical. I have a Wahl trimmer that I use for my goatee that I paid under 40 bucks for. Going to a barber even once a month for what I need would easily cost 30-40 bucks a pop.
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus 11 месяцев назад
I would guess the efficiency of a safety razor over a cartridge razor is the sturdiness of the blade and razor design. While cartridge razors have multiple blades, the minimal depth of their blades (and plastic razor blade housing, plus blade gap) *would seem* to lessen their ability to cut beard growth as efficiently as a safety razor. To be fair, I've seen some safety razor designs which don't hold double edge blades very securely and introduce blade flex. Slant razors (like a Merkur 37C) torque double edge blades, which make the blades sturdier than in the majority of standard safety razors. Feather Artist Club blades (for use in single-edge razors) are thicker still and may be more comfortable to use in some instances.

Previously I was using mostly inexpensive Panasonic electric razor, as I don’t have a heavy hair growth and for shaving mustache and not touching neck a lot - electrical shaver is perfect., cheapest and quickest shave with excellent results (but ofc razor can be expensive). No ingrowing hair at all. I was almost always using it dry with cheapest aftershave. Ofc I still used Gillet Fusion for “sensitive parts” and for multidirectional flat lying hairs on my neck.

The big problem I had with cartridge razors was that my shaved stubble collects and clogs up under the edge of the blades. That rapidly reduces the cutting efficiency. And the water coming out of the sink isn't strong enough to clear that out. So I have to resort to tapping the razor on the side of the sink to dislodge it. And the price of the cartridges is just ridiculous.

Too many blades in a cartridge. Three should be the most; no need to have five blades in one cartridge. On the other side, Gil Fus-5 is easier to unclog than some, and is the preference for head shaves for some people. For the most part, buying new or more cartridges gets expensive.

Very noteworthy discussion about costs for the disposable cartridges. Something can be done to make that expense become more efficient. That is, clearing the clogging during the shaves, cleaning and post-handling the cartridge after the shave. Good post-shaving cartridge treatment can allow for more number of shaves for one cartridge. You want to rinse, clean it, dry it, rub against a towel (NOT in the cutting direction), and then give a thin coating of mineral oil.

Cartridges should be good with less blades and less gimmicks. Too many blades won't shave EXTRA SUPER DUPER CLOSER, since you can do that with a single blade DE already, and since they're the equivalent of several passes, it might be more irritating. Most "articulation" gimmicks like the side tilting ball on the Fusion and the turning neck on the Mach 3D won't really make a difference unless you're jamming the razor against your skin. They're placebo, only the head pivot makes a real difference. All these extra micro differences in combs, rubber strips are also gimmicks. Cart razor design peaked with the Sensor.

An adjustable safety razor, like the Rockwell 6C or Parker Variant, is a great option. These are a little more expensive than the widely recommended Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C, but one can set an adjustable safety razor based on one's shaving skill or shaving needs. While the Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C are fine razors, their efficiency is limited and may require re-shaving troublesome areas with more pressure (which isn't recommended). Having an option to shave beard growth at a higher setting (as one can tolerate) fewer times will lead to a more comfortable and efficient shave.
