I decided to try a side by side shave using a straight razor, my Joseph Rodgers near wedge, and a safety razor, my Rockwell 2C with a Feather blade. Which is the closest shave? You'll have to watch to find out 🙂
Here is a link to my first straight razor video.

Nothing better than shaving with a straight that you personally honed! Congrats. I’m about two months into straights transitioning from DE, but I went all in. Nothing but straights for the last 4 weeks as I find it’s stopped any remaining bumps or ingrown I had with the DE. Honing is definitely a whole new world and a massive learning curve.

It is a great feeling! It gave me a real sense of accomplishment. I wish I could do it all of my razors 😕 That is a big jump, you made - nothing but straights. I think I'll always be a weekend shaver with mine because I do really enjoy my de razors, as well. I have the best of both worlds. You are so right - honing is a huge learning curve! I must admit, I like the learning and the challenge of trying to bring a razor back. When I can properly look after the ones I have then I might buy something really nice: A Puma 1938 or a Dubl Duck Golden Edge 😃👍

I thought you did a great job with the straight razor Mark. The spots you mentioned hard to get a BBS on your neck are problem areas for me as well. Learning to shave with a straight or a DE by going on forums is like reading a book on how to swim. You can read all you want but you must get into the water and practice, practice, practice.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
Reading a book on how to swim - I love your analogy. Yes, it is all practice and fine tuning. To be honest, I'm very pleased I managed to get one of my razors sharp again. It's been a bit of a struggle. Hopefully, with regard to honing, I'm on my way. I can really see why safety razors sales really took off. I hope you have a nice weekend, mate. All the best. 🙂👍

Hello Mark. I enjoyed your side by side comparison video. I don't use a straight myself but there could be one sometime in the future once I get more confident and consistent with my DE razors.

I'm glad you enjoyed my shave, Paul. I always wonder if my straight razor shaves are interesting to you guys that don't have one. That's why I thought doing a side by side might be quite good. I'm wondering what a shavette is like. Mmmmm. 😉 Have a good week. Take care.

Nice Video. I never used a straight razor, but I do actually get perfect smooth shaves in some DE-setups, so it may depend on the setup and shaver's technique with each razor. ;)
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
I think your right. There are so many variables, and it does depend on the razor; the type of blade; how many shaves yo' expectations had with it and then, technique. It's an endless quest for the perfect shave. I must admit, if I didn't have a channel, I would stick with just a few razors and blades.

Very similar results mark when shaving with the straight overhaul good but due to direction of hair growth some awkward bits to get the angle each of my straights has its own character and req slight adjustment in technique .sorry to hear about your allergic reaction. Great video and two great razors thanks for sharing.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
Thanks Richard. It's re-assuring to read a comment from someone who shaves with a straight and agrees with what I'm saying. One of the things I enjoy most is the feedback from the videos, even if someone does happen to disagree with me. It helps me when I make a video. Yes, shame about the reaction but there are so many good soaps, we are spoiled for choice really. Have a great Sunday. 😃👍

Thanks for your video, was really interesting and the comparison was great. I been DE Shaver for the last 4 years and decided to try with a Straight Razor just got one for Christmas and tried today, felt not really sharp.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 5 лет назад
Hi. I've struggled a little with this myself. I think that a lot of straight razors that come from the factory are not truly shave ready; this seems to be the common consensus, anyway. Even with shave ready razors I have trouble keeping mine sharp and there seems to be variation in the sharpness/smoothness depending on the honing stones used. Perhaps it is a different feeling to a safety razor and trying to compare the two doesn't work so well. Perhaps the safety razor is just better. I must admit I'm still trying to work it out myself.

Thank you Gordon, I'm pleased you liked the video and found it interesting. I haven't tried with a shavette simply because I don't own one, yet. I must admit I would love to try the Feather Artist Club shavette, I know they are the best but I can't afford one, at the moment. I hope you're having a good week. 😃👍

In Russia they use nerve agents; over here, double agent Chew sends out a shave package 😃👍 No worries, Mark. I was still very glad to receive such a nice package from you. It was very highly scented. I was very disappointed that the Lucky Tiger didn't suit. I was really looking forward to that one. It made my chest a bit asthmatic too. It's surprising isn't it? Have a good week, mate.

really sorry to hear that Mark...like i said before... the Razorock is highly Fragranced, so i kind of get that...makes you wonder weather the cream is made at the same place as the AS lotion, its not unheard of companys sourcing out to meet demand...just one slight ingrediant change or add, and bingo....i dont need to tell you mate....you take care mate...hope you have a fantastic week...all the best.... Hey Mark. I've been busy, which is why I haven't talked to you much lately, but I have to ask. Which type of razor do you like better? Straight or DE? Me personally I prefer DE, mostly Gillette DE, because I'm a Gillette DE guy, mostly because of it's historical and engineering value.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
Hey Jonathan, I hope you're well. I like both, to be honest, but in different ways. I love my DE and SE razors, especially the ones that have a bit of history. I love the variety of razor blades and I think I'll always shave with a DE. At the moment, I can only see myself as a weekend straight razor enthusiast. Mind you, there are some beautiful straights that I would love to own. I find a DE shave to be easier and a little more comfortable. 🙂

Sound like a reaction to Lanolin. I can't remember if you ever used a soap with that. I know a youtuber that used blood oath soap no problem but the aftershave he had a reaction. I can't use colognes on my skin but i can uses aftershaves. I shave with arko,derby,williams mug,cremo, Palmolive, Pacific shave company-dont use the shave pods-look at the first ingredient-Triethanolamine- I know tob- castle forbes- truefitt & Hill use it in their soaps- very nasty stuff. I like watching your RU-vid channel very much
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
I've used a couple of soaps with lanolin. Haslinger Sheeps and MWF. Both were fine, thankfully. I think it is the scent oil in the Caribbean Holiday. That's interesting about colognes. Perhaps it's because the scent is stronger. Thanks for taking part in the discussion. I really appreciate it.

Cool. How much harder is it to maintain a straight razor and is it more expensive overall than safety razors + blades? Thank you. God bless, Proverbs 31
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 5 лет назад
It is much harder to maintain a straight razor. They are made of carbon steel so they'll rust if you don't take very good care of them. In terms of cost you need honing stones and a strop and maybe some stropping paste, unless you know someone who can hone it for you, so the outlay can be a little expensive.
@smievil
@smievil 2 года назад
rust is probably not much of an issue if you use it fairly regularly. initial cost is high, but whetstones and razors can last really well. safety razor is really affordable, but a decade of shaving with gilette cartridges would probably cost quite a bit. sharpening stuff can probably take some effort to get into, feel like it can be rewarding too. but maintaining kitchen or outdoor knives are very different than straight razors since razors benefit a lot from a very well polished edge, whereas other knives could do well with rather coarse stones.

I had a very similar reaction to RazoRock. I now use Stirling Soaps and Aftershave. They are amazing. Better than any other brand I've tried in last 25 years of wet shaving. They are cheaper than other brands and you can order samples. I used almost every single one of their variety. They are just amazing.

I have a couple of samples that I'm trying, it is very nice soap indeed. I haven't tried their aftershave yet though. It shows in your comment that you really like Stirling soaps. I'm friends with Billy, the Brighton shaver and he has gone over to Stirling soaps. Have a good week. Cheers 👍

Thanks for your video. If you're interested in trying XTG on your neck (as I would) straight razor newbie Paul Humphries seems to have figured it out -- /watch?v=UVyMy5xTes0&t=13m05s I really wonder if experienced straight razor shavers get BBS results XTG on their necks, since no one seems to use this technique. Hopefully it works for you. Maybe one day I'll try a straight razor.

Friendship Shaving I've thought about getting a straight edge many a time, but think it'd be a step too far. Only made the switch to DE a month or so back and tbh am enjoying the shave I get from that, + trying out different blades etc. Maybe one day I'll take that step to a SE or a shavette.

Envy yr daring to find the secrets, straight or DE, simultaneously. This whilst standing, yr stamina is more than good. Myself to sit in same action. Y wish access to top notch straights, stainless, damascus, Ulrik fm Koraath Kento Austria, black- n goldsmith, metallurgist, yr dreams come true... Myself, I've stopped straight shaving myself, instead go downstairs, indian shop, shaving foc, feeling proud himself holding Koraaths straight. Lateron, I pay his beer, indian Kingfisher, relaxed. Cheerio, Achim+

Hej Mark, isn't it what y get is what y paid for. Y'day I watched a video abt one-dollar-club razor and the guy explained it took him half an hour to bring it to shaveble conditions... No such thing with Koorat-kento, the guy is Ulrik and email 'Koorath@gmx.at', his webasite is worth to see. He offers 5/8 to 8/8, standard made, custom made as well. I paid abt Euro100 for Std stainless, but can reach 300 for Damascus with customized handles. He works alo ne, dfelivery can take upto 1 month (customized razors).

Its nice to communicate with you as well, Mark. One shaver can learn fm other's experience, that why we exchange opinions. Guess, mostly we start with cartridges, get fed up n turn towards the 'real thing'. We own DE89 n 34C, but eventually look for the 'difference', being out there. Same story with soaps, brushes and soon, the den isn't big enough anymore, more shelves to be added. Watch out for yr purse! I started with Kent brush in a display in London, 30yrs ago, BK12. The shops display just talked to be, so I was hooked. Now the BK12 is still alive, but not in use, back to display. Things hv changed n floppyness is disliked, greater backbone preferred. Right now, for myself I found mixed knots, horse/badger, badger/boar do the trick, great backbone due boar/horse and soft tips of badger combine the best of both worlds. not vry expensive. Look at Maggard knots, as well as Lord Randall, not to forget AP Shave... You won't be disappointed. Cheers, Achim+
