Saffy's Painful Childhood Memories in the Park | Absolutely Fabulous 

Abusive parents are usually compleatly self-interested.

Serious dramas always go overboard, straight to the very worst. It's like the difference in portrayals of teenage life in the Inbetweeners versus other shows. The Inbetweeners show that most of the time is spent wishing it was like the TV shows, with actual interesting things happening. But that really, your life is very dull. Unlike the serious teen shows where in a group of six friends, one will get pregnant before 18, one will die of a drug overdose, one will be struggling with their sexuality, one will be getting physically abused by their dad, one will have a psychotically overbearing mother and the other will simply feel socially awkward and lonely all the time. None of them are ever shown sat watching the TV or playing an XBOX, bored out of their minds wishing some crazy antics would ensue.

And she has amazing range - from Saffy, to the party girl sister in Pride and Prejudice, to the hard-driving newspaper editor in Press Gang.

Patsy is also jealous because Eddy is the only person who ever cared about her, but she has to share Eddy's time, attention and affections with Saffy, and she hates her for that.

@@nina1522 Patsy is always wary of the fact that despite all the neglect. Saffy always has a place in Eddie's heart. And comes before her in a lot of ways. Sure she's the cool best friend but Saffy will get the house and the money.

I also love that when Eddie tries to claim some people would say she was a great mother, even Patsy turns her head away and is like "well let's not get crazy."

Yeah. It was worth Saffy going with them just to see that!

I love that even as a child, Saffy knew she needed to warn Patsy.

Joanna caused some issues in her early days. With her latest work and trips abroad - going the whole Michael Palin route: I'm sure she'll get her damehood. Probably next year, tbh.

If you listen to the commentary on the show, Jennifer laughs at how Patsy runs away after the "You had it all - I had nothing!" line - it shows how Patsy is afraid of Saffy

I think that is my favorite outfit that she wore on the whole show.

Patsy actually told Saffy about her own dysfunctional childhood in two episodes. Those episodes were the one where Patsy gives Saffy and Mother a makeover for daytime TV and the one were Mother accidentally locked Edina, Saffy and Patsy in the living room 🛋️and yet Saffy was awful to Patsy even then. At least when Saffy argues with Edina and Patsy we the viewers know and understand what's going on as Bubble and Mother clearly didn't as it is implied Mother has something similar to Alzheimer's and Bubble is always acting thick and stupid in general but the end results are 100% pure comedy gold!

Edina and Patsy are not Evil And bad, they'e average & good , and heroic like us.

It’s true, she has - and she is strong against the odds. But you can also see how much her mother‘s shamelessness and abandonment snd recklessness has still influenced her. She’s frumpy, had to parent her own mother since she was a child, is old before her time, doesn’t allow herself carefree times and is in some ways caught in not wanting to ever be like her mother, which firmly places her at an opposite extreme. She’s also still constantly and daily abused and manipulated. She is aware of it, luckily, and can counter it, but still has to deal with it, and it’s constant and stressful. It’s the perfect portrayal of narcissistic abuse by this sort of ridiculous, grandiose, selfish mother.

You’re confusing the characters with the actresses. Julia is 10 years younger than Jennifer, who is 12 years younger than Joanna. Eddy is way more than 10 years older than Saffron.

@@garym6338 Jennifer was born in 1958. Julia 1968. And Johnna 1946. So no I did not confused the actors with their characters. The only thing I got incorrect was Johnna being 10 years older when she's actually 12. I was just pointing out that they're all about 10 years apart

Saffy is a character who is the daughter of character Eddy. Eddy did not have Saffy at 10. Therefore, Saffy is not “just 10 years younger than Eddy”. She is way more than 10 years younger. However, the actress for Saffron (Julia) IS only 10 years younger than the actress for Eddy (Jennifer). This is what I meant by you confusing characters and their actors.
