Explore why our parks, preserves, and remaining wild land, no matter how vast, are not enough to sustain our ecosystems. Learn about the importance of private lands and how a collective effort by landowners, managers, and civilians is crucial. Discover how small steps, such as reducing lawns, planting natives, and removing invasives, can contribute to the restoration of 20 million acres, equivalent to half of our current lawn area. Be part of this national movement for a healthier environment.
The Illinois Monarch Project and Sag Moraine Native Plant Community are teaming up to create “Partnerships for Pollinators," a series of events in 2024 to promote monarch conservation efforts in Illinois. Our shared mission: to preserve habitats, plant native species, and ensure a thriving future for monarch butterflies and pollinators.
Doug Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, where he has authored 106 research publications and has taught insect-related courses for 41 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book Bringing Nature Home was published by Timber Press in 2007, The Living Landscape, co-authored with Rick Darke, was published in 2014; Nature’s Best Hope, a New York Times bestseller, was released in February 2020, and his latest book, The Nature of Oaks, was released in March 2021. His awards include recognition from The Garden Writer’s Association, Audubon, The National Wildlife Federation, Western Carolina University, The Garden Club of America, and The American Horticultural Association. Doug lives with his wife, Cindy, on their restored property in Oxford, PA.

I've made it my goal to have no grass in my central illinois yard. I'm about 70% there. I can't even count the number of native plants I have. I love my yard and think it's the most beautiful in the neighborhood. It certainly has the most wildlife. The neighbors, however, hate it and have reported me to the city repeatedly. My mason bees are going to sting their children, the birds poo on their cars, I'm attracting squirrels that are going to chew through the siding on their homes, their dogs are going to get ticks from my yard. It goes on and on. Ignorance is the biggest problem we native plant lovers have to overcome. Well, that and apathy. Thanks for another amazing talk with Dr. Tallamy!

You're welcome! I think we need to gradually acclimate people back to what our landscapes are supposed to look like. In the suburbs of Chicago I did my FRONT yard in all natives. I showed intentionality with grass paths, flagstone walkways, bird bath, bench, etc. It looks like a garden, not a prairie. So far I have had all positive comments.
