Track 5 from their self-titled debut album released in 1978 copyright Polydor Records. It was recorded at Phase One Studios in Toronto and was produced by Paul Gross. The band was formed in Oakville, Ontario the previous year by some former members of the band Fludd. They were influenced by the great prog rock bands that had preceded them like Genesis, Yes and King Crimson. The main songwriters were Jim Crichton on bass and keyboards and Welsh-born Michael Sadler on vocals. This album was only a modest success in Canada and generated no interest in the U.S. but German fans purchased 30,000 copies of it as an import. The band has had a loyal following in Germany ever since and has always been more popular in Europe versus North America. Although it was largely ignored at the time of release, it has to be considered one of the great progressive rock debuts and most of the songs are still included in their live shows, as they are still touring. They would achieve success in North America in 1981 with the release of the album "Worlds Apart." This album received poor reviews and reached No. 33 in Sweden. Written by Jim Crichton & Michael Sadler and produced by Paul Gross. Featuring:
Michael Sadler - Lead vocals, keyboards & Moog synthesizer, bass on "Humble Stance"
Ian Crichton - Lead & rhythm guitars
Peter Rochon - Keyboards, Moog synthesizer, programming, arrangements & background vocals
Jim Crichton - Bass, bass synthesizer & bass pedals
Steve Negus - Drums & percussion
Ellery Sneed had one great need
To do everything just right
If things were not planned and all done by hand
He would ready himself for a fight
One afternoon while sitting alone
He came to a great realization
(When it's his turn to die)
(Will there be enough time for plenty of planned preparation)
With a few minutes thought his decision was clear
A fate most perfectly neat
Not a friend could remain to witness his death
So a terminal wine he would treat
The plan was to hold a very large feast
Serving the wine at the end
(Joining the fun would be everyone)
(He'd been calling his friend)
Invitations went out, all guests did arrive
The meal looked a great success
Deciding the time he brought out the wine
Up stood a familiar guest
Here's a toast to our gracious host
Said Ell's friend Billingford Bluffer
(Never in my life will I taste but a bite)
(Of a more perfectly planned out supper)
