So funny! Just today we were wondering if refiring a ferric chloride piece to add horsehair would burn off the color and I could find nothing in any articles to answer that question. Perfect timing! I have been doing alternative firing extensively for about five years but always appreciate any hints I can get from others.
Please repeat the workshop with a small microphone, I can't hear half of what was said. If a transparent glaze were put on and baked again, how much would it affect the colors? I'm wondering if it can be made waterproof, safe for consuming food from it and keep the colors. Thank you!
I’m sure it’s not an issue but I’m just curious about the melting point of aluminum foil which I looked up in is 1220°F. I guess I’ll just try this on faith and see what the aluminum foil does
Anthony, Lately my foil saggar pots have large whites areas. My last firing was to 1420. Did I go to high? I used 3x of ferric. I want the reds and oranges and less light areas. Is your wife a potter also?
I just wanted to clarify. You heat the kiln up and keep it at constant temperature and change in and out pieces as they are fired? The pieces withstand being put into a hot kiln without breaking? How long is each batch in the kiln?
Good demo of ferric chloride in action is to make a thick 'saucer' of tin foil. Drop just a fc in the bowl and it takes a second then a violent, ugly black/brown boil occurs. The display will guarantee you wear your gloves from then on. :-)
