There's someone here who's got real power-- they can actually follow through with whatever it is that they're offering you-- and then there's someone else here who's just a blowhard: they think they can change the world just by being dogmatic about their beliefs and how they think something will be/should be. Take the advice of someone who works in whatever field, or at least has some reason to know what they're talking about. I understand wanting to back up a friend, but you may have to join/take a leadership role in an institution-- or take a side on your own terms-- to defend your interest. And, whatever you do, don't invest money in something that sounds too good to be true to help out a friend or because you want to look flush at church or with a friend group or whatever. You may be helping someone else by being the first to say, "no."
