Sahith Theegala's self-imposed penalty at TOUR Championship

During the third round of the 2024 TOUR Championship, Sahith Theegala felt that he unintentionally moved the sand in his back swing during his second shot from the bunker on No. 3 at East Lake Golf Club. After the shot he called a rules official to explain the situation and self-imposed a penalty on himself. He was later accessed a two-stroke penalty.

The final leg of the three-event FedExCup Playoffs series arrives as a restored East Lake Golf Club hosts the TOUR Championship. A field of 30 players battles it out in this no-cut finale for the biggest prize on TOUR. Scottie Scheffler once again heads to East Lake ranked No. 1 in the FedExCup Standings after a fabulous 2024 campaign that includes six TOUR victories and a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. This is the third straight year Scheffler enters the season finale ranked No. 1, and he’ll start two shots ahead of the pack heading into the first round. Xander Schauffele has also had a great season, claiming two major titles. The American finished T2 and T5 in recent years at East Lake and sits two shots back of Scheffler. Hideki Matsuyama also eyes his chances in Georgia this week. He won the first Playoffs event at the FedEx St. Jude Championship but withdrew from the BMW Championship last week due to a back injury. He claimed the bronze medal at the Olympics, as well as victory at The Genesis Invitational earlier this year. Others to look out for are Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland.

Unlike Patrick Reed, Theegala has sportsmanship and integrity. Doing the right thing when no one is watching. Great example of what it means by honoring the integrity of the game.

Very true, and the big difference here is one was accidental while the other was intentional. Theegala did what everyone should do, while Reed did what no one should ever do.

That decision was worth $2.5 million, he would have been second, and if not for the penalty, he would have received $10m instead of $7.5 million, all respect to him, he will earn more as a result of his decision.

He understands how powerful the media is and what it can do to one’s image. He opted to expose his honest mistake so he does not end up like Fatrick Reed. He brought it to light before the media and trolls did. Good on him.

Here here. I just don't get calling that penalty on yourself, especially in this tournament. I understand he's trying to show honesty and integrity but in reality... it's not at all as if touching the sand helped him. How about this: it's perfectly legal to just re-tee the ball if a player accidentally hits the ball during a practice swing (zach Johnson did this). Now THAT to me is really bizarre that golf rules allow that. Even tiger woods has done that.

Just became an instant fan of Theegala. Calling on yourself is hard, we have all been there. Golf is a game of integrity. This is the right way of gaining notoriety.

This is why people hate golf. Rules for the sake of rules without any application of common sense or judgment. Had absolutely ZERO impact on the shot or outcome, but lets be brutally punitive anyway. Oh, and replay shows no infraction, but it doesn't matter. My favorite are the penalties for acts of God. Other sports have refs who make judgment calls on how much contact is a foul, how much is interference, did it impact the play. Not golf. You moved a blade of grass two inches from the ball. Eight stroke penalty. *golf clap*

Can the penalty be reversed if the rules officials see, based on the video, that there's no evidence that he touched the sand or does it stand because he called it on himself.

Two shots seems kinda harsh for this type of sand infraction. I guess in tournaments without cameras everywhere, moving sand when folks aren’t looking is a thing

Sahith might have done the right thing. But hitting a grain of sand in the backswing is totally possible given that the rake can introduce ridges into which a ball can (will mostly) settle and so the sand surrounding will be higher. Golf has a lot of quirks. Changing the lie before the swing is clearly wrong, but during the swing would be very common for amateurs.

@@randykirk62 believe me I’m all for rules but intent has to be factored in. Also if there’s no video evidence how can the penalty be enforced. If a bystander reported it and Sahith said he didn’t touch the sand would there have been a penalty?
