I like that the video shows someone applying glass overhead, while it’s falling off, and having to use fingers instead of tools to make it work. It’s a functional repair, not a cosmetic one - and equal to or better than original expense - from an expert.

Fantastic, thank you. My 1979 has a few spots and I wanted to be done from underside but no one seemed to buy in to my "plan" and now I watched you do it.

a trick : you can watch movies on flixzone. Been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.

I have essentially the same issue on the interior of a cabin in a power boat, near the hatch. Can I just cut out the delaminated fiberglass, remove the core and replace, and then replace the original fiberglass? Instead of new glass?

Huh! Does Not use peel ply to support the fibres, and keep the layers in place.

This repair seems to me rather cosmetically done. I do not like what I see at 3:15 and the method used will still retain voids in the repair. Those hard non tapered or otherwise-formed edges on the original cut out piece could have been replaced with a laying of new material over a scarf joint. through tapering the edges. Just laying an epoxied piece over them is not what I would have done. The original strength in the deck was not replaced. The bulk head seems to be done better and it is a good job that the chain plate does not make use of the repaired deck. I must admit the beam formed by the upper cabin side and the hull side were not affected in any way.

But voids has been filled with epoxy putty, which should give be enough since there are no big forces there?

It's not a heavy structural part mate. I agree with what you are saying, just not for that specific area of the boat.

Gee it's a balsa core J/Boat, guess every J/Boat with balsa core ya need to learn how to do this. Maybe if J/Boats would have done a better job when installing fastners ala West System in the holes after drilling the holes

I don't think you're going to get an answer at this point.

Use foam or balsa...or marine plywood. It depends what area you are replacing.

Hey, this guy? The guy in the video? He's kind-of and east coast guy. Right? I mean, don't get me wrong, he does great work. I'd like to buy him a beer. But he's not from Chula Vista, is he? I really like the video. I actually watched it more than once because I have a 50-year-old Cal 25 that I am using WEST systems goop to refit, rebuilt and upgrade. Hey, has that J-22 hit the water Yet?

you really gotta be kidding me. The mighty WEST system who sells me gallons of epoxy comes up with this video for balsa core replacement....You should be ashamed of yourselves.

It's not a structural area. There is nothing around it, this fix will last the rest of the boats life. Now if you were talking a heavily structural part then 100% I'm with you. This is a basic patch job as that's all it needed.
