My DIY restoration of my 1987 Warrior 38 sailboat is progressing steadily. While I'm waiting for the hull to dry out (as a part of an Osmosis treatment) I've turned my attention to the interior of the boat.

Hi there, Drying out the hull. Here's what I do here in the northwest. Pickup some metal conduit, and build yourself a tent frame. Get some reinforced plastic and cover the conduit frames. Make sure you place the plastic under the boat making a complete enclosure. Find a wood stove, pellet stove wood heat...wood heat is dry and no moisture. Place a couple box fans in the tent and start moving the dry air. You will dry out your boat very...very quickly. Some guys set the wood stove outside the tent.

Hi Mads! Pfffff I finely made it trough all 181 video's and I loved everyone of them. Thanks you for making them and thanks for ging me the courage to fix my own boat. Looking at the work you stil need to do makes my project seem like a walk in the park!

Wow! You made it through all 181 videos?! I tip my hat to you, sir! :) There is nothing to fear about doing DIY aboard a boat :) It's a lot of fun and a bit of common sense goes a long way :) What kind of boat will you be fixing up? What is on the todo-list? :)
@Foolspeed66

Hi Mads, First I have to apoligize for my English writing skills. I am not used to talking or writing in English but I will do my best ! Making it through the video's wasnt that hard. They are fun and entertaining ! But I have to confess that in one video I pushed fast forward. That was episode 99 and 100 about Kamau buiding his 54ft boat. If he builds as fast as he talks id couldt take some time before his boat is ready ! ;-) But in the moment I have a Kirie Fifty 23 on the hard with a blown head gasket. Its an old Renault Couch 30RC 27 HP motor and as aspected there are no spare parts available anymore. But I have found a company who can make a new one. But the idea is to fix her up and sell her for a profit. So I can slowly step up the boat ladder. I started with a very small Carine sold her with a profit then bought a Domp 740 and sold this boat also with a profit so I now stepped up to teh Kirie. Unfortunately I have gotten divorced last year and the project is lying on his ass as we say in the Netherlands. But as I have told you before your videos gave me a boost and hopefully I can soon start again! So on the todo list ist the engine, new anty fouling, buffing the hull, in case I decide to keep her the list will become a little bit longer. Thanks for your reply and I am looking forward to your next video. Oh by the way ! Thanks for pointing out that some people made a comment on your pronunciation of the word Insulation. Now I cant get your pronunciation out of my head ! :-))))))))

Hi Mads super progress (well apart from the hull drying) The scraper you are so rightly pleased with is called a Skarsten scraper - I have one - but I must have put it in a very secure place .... Must rediscover it.😳👍

All hail the mighty scraper! Lol. Kitchen improvements, hmm. Build some sort of Vent over the Stove to get that moisture away from the wood. I like the idea of the stove in the middle of the counter, mine is tucked against a wall, no room for error. If you want a safer stove go for Petrol. However it is a lot trickier but burns the same as gas. Big format drawers with a locking mechanism in the open position are nice. Fridge some place else an option? Make sure that fridge heat exchanger is very well ventilated with cool air, it'll save you a lot of energy, more than overdoing the insulation. Don't get a freezer, it just makes your fridge wet, get ice in a bag, it'll keep a long time in the fridge. Oh and keep in mind that with that asymmetrical cabin layout you will need a lot of heavy items on your kitchen side to counterbalance a fully loaded seating area. Cheers, Mark

Attach a shop vac to the orbital sander exhaust thereby capturing most dust. The sander's filter does little to capture dust. On a larger interior refinishing we attach a 30' swimming pool cleaning hose to the shop vac exhaust and port it overboard. No need for a respirator as the dust is vacated. Stay healthy and have fun.

Sanding sanding sanding, I feel your pain! You do a great job making a video about sanding not boring. I don't know how you do it, but you do! Keep up the good work (creating videos and boat work) I saw someone else comment about trying washing only one side of the boat so you can have a controlled experiment. I agree.
@SailLife
@SailLife 8 лет назад
Thank you so much :) Given how much sanding I still have left to do it's going to get more and more challenging to make interesting content. Fingers crossed it won't prove impossible ;) Perhaps I should try washing just one side of the hull - might yield an interesting result. I won't be conclusive though as one side of the boat gets a lot more sunshine than the other :) Stille - could be fun plus it's less boat I need to wash :P How's your boat coming along? :)

+Sail Life well, as you saw the deck core replacement is almost complete. It's solid, not bouncy and water doesn't squirt out the screw holes when you step on deck. Progressing slowly on several different items. I would love to finish one project, but they alway seem to be connected to another project. I am focused on getting the boat water tight from above, so I stop filling with rain when not covered. It's been a busy couple months with family visiting and my son graduating high school, and sea scout stuff.

Hi Mads, your channel is great to watch. Contrary to what you might think, sanding is very interesting for an audience! We live vicariously through the people we watch (like you), and one of the most gratifying aspects of a channel is to see work get done at high speed, while we are just sipping our coffee and not exerting ourselves. Montages of sanding getting done is one of the most satisfying things to see, because there's all this work to be done, and magically before our eyes it happens in a matter of seconds, with no pain! Well, your pain, but no pain to us. So although you may think it's like watching paint dry for us, it actually is quite the opposite! Cheers, and keep up the good work.

I have an old boat I am working on as well. It's a Helson 22 and it's just a little day sailor with a cabin. They had a ridiculous "galley" in there that was just particle board with a sink in the center that dropped straight into the bilge (no pipes, just fell of of the sink into a hole open to the bilge) and a space for some kind of camp stove. The wood was delaminated and moldy, so out it went. While I will not be putting a galley in and will most like just make cushioned benches of most of the boat, I may put some sort of small table in place the the galley countertop. Since I like to use as much recycles materials, one thing I like to do it glue up spare pieces of wood using epoxy or 3-to-1 Shellack and make a kind of butcher's block countertop. A good way to use scrap lumber from your project or someone else's scraps they don't want and it makes a really nice countertop. You cut the glued block to size, plane it down and put whatever sealing finish you want it it. Easy and cheap. Just an idea. Love the videos! Thanks.
@SailLife
@SailLife 8 лет назад
A gally made from particle board sound like a horrible idea :D It's good to hear that it's not just Trident Marine (manufacture of the Warrior 38) that made some odd choices. Cool idea to use recycled/reclaimed materials :) I'd love to see some pics of you boat :)

I know this is an old video and you have already removed the laminate from your old counter top but so you know for future using paint thinner to remove laminate works amazing. just get the removal started with a putty knife or similar tool and put the paint thinner in a spray bottle and apply to underside of the laminate while slowly lifting it up using your putty knife. continue to apply more paint thinner as needed while lifting. use it all the time at work in my cabinet shop works amazing. great videos btw.

It would cost some serious money but I think Corian solid counter tops would be so cool and with fiddles. It would really cause the galley to "pop" visually and function so beautifully.

Hey Madds - thanks for another great video. You ask for a lot of input and that is great. But you go so fast (don't slow down), it's hard for me to remember all the things I'd like to comment on. So, here is just one. On the design of the galley - you mentioned you would like to use it before you re-design it. I agree 100 percent with that approach. Some yacht designers are not that great but if the boat has been in production for a while (which yours has), chances are good that any design flaws have been worked out. So trust the designer unless you have at least 2 or 3 years of hard use to prove that it needs to be changed. Just giving you a vote for the direction I already know you are headed. Ron

Hey Mads, Ive been a big fan for a while since the 7 part v-berth insulation videos! Thanks for your well thought out and interesting videos. Im as big of fan of your editing as your content! In this video I see you love your scraper. Ive used a similar tool on my old boston whaler on its teak trim but in combination of a heat gun. The heat helped soften the varnish, then scraped off easily.

It is great to see your progress, but I would as I know others have said, think that the process of drying out the hull would be aided just by tape a light tarpaulin around the hull and fix it underneath and then put a small electric heater (or similar) with about 1-2kW of power underneath. The warm air should improve both ventilation and the drying process. Because as you have mentioned earlier, this summer have been very wet and fairly cold from a weather point of view. In great anticipation, I am awaiting some dry and temperated weather to be able to continue painting my little live-aboard. I have a live-aboard situated in Sweden, Göteborg, she was built 1929 as a Bunker-tanker, and since 1943 she has been called Reana. She is 15x5 meters and at the "marina" where I am moored I have to pay for 20 meters and it is 2'800 SEK per month. That is approximately 33'600 SEK / year approximately 3'535 Euro per year. And for the electricity I pay 2,25 SEK / kWh. This is quite expensive, but at this particular marina, I am allowed to make a bit of noice, chipping away at the rust and so on ;-) The ever on-going refurbishment and improvement is aided in the fact that no one can complain if I need to use a rust hammer or anglegrinder. In many of the marinas around this one, you are not allowed to make too much noice.

Hey Mads, I too struggle to make exciting content with my Catamaran build, but in reality I am fascinated by different uses of tools and techniques and even things like your use of a scraper instead of just sanding is a revelation to me and one that will likely save me hours of time and in that respect, it is exciting. Love the innovative click bate use of the watermelons as well.All the best Rossco.

Had the same sticker shock with the Force Ten. I have an alcohol stove with a pressure tank. No extensive research yet but it seems much simpler than propane and easier to get the fuel. Great watching your vids, as usual. BTW, I am a chemist and the hygroscopic compound explanation is plausible. If so, rinsing with fresh may help but not much. Many of these compounds may be "trapped" in the glass. Sitting in a fresh water lake for a month or two may work better. Doesn't seem practical. Driving the moisture out by heating the interior a few degrees may work but sounds expensive. You may have no choice but clear the blisters, rinse the hull well, fair it, and seal it. Luck to you.

Hi Mads.... In Sydney we cannot live aboard our boat more than 3 days a week or full time for more than 3 mths - other places you can. To moor your boat (say a 33 footer) in the Slips/Pen would be about $7000 per year which would be about $6500 CAD. In regards to the stove, the marine stoves have always been very expensive even the cheap ones. Back in 1978 my Dad was building our new boat and it was cheaper (50 %) to buy a LPG Caravan / Motorhome two burner stove, griller and oven than it was to buy a Maxi two burner metho stove. 40 years on I see boats for sale from that era with the same caravan stove still perfectly good. My current yacht has a more modern caravan stove than was used by a number of boat manufactures back then. You just had to fit up a set of fiddle rails and bolt on side brackets for the gimbals and you had a suitable stove. The point I am poorly trying to make is that your stove doesn't have to be Ships grade Stainless Steel as the stove is inside the boat - the enamel is fine. Broaden your search outside of the marine spectrum, you maybe presently surprised.

Dang! Those are some pretty strict rules and high prices :( What about cruisers where do they go? :) Very interesting! The two burner stove aboard Obelix is 43 years old and in great condition too :) I'll take a look and see what "caravan" options are available around here :)

Hi Mads, perhaps it would be usefull to create an edge with guffer tape around the hull, just above the waterline. Than the rain which is pooring down the hull is dropping off before it gets in contact with the underwater part. Keep on with your project, I am very interested in your work. all the best Sören

As you are doing a lot of scraping I will mention that there is a larger version of your scraper with a knob so you can use both hands and Tungsten Carbide blades that last simply ages. As to the laminate removal, Ive done a lot and found the best tool is a drywall taping knife, I like a 4" size. You heat the laminate but also get the knife hot (wear gloves) and it goes much faster. If there is an edge where it is tucked under, just get the hot knife up to it and yank, out it comes. For the locker catches try looking at Lee Valley tools. They have masses of hard to find hardware.

I have just discovered your channel. Really enjoying your series of videos relating to your new boat. Just in case you have not encountered this strange and very annoying incompatibility, varnish and paint do not mix. If you apply paint to any trace of varnish, the evil varnish will, given enough time cause the paint to delaminate and break away. In fact, because of the chemical makeup of varnish versus paint, it's like trying to mix oil and water. So, in order to paint a varnished surface you two options. First, strip off every scrap of varnish or coat the varnished surface with a coat of Zinsser which effectively acts as a barrier and really does work well.

I had a 4 burner Force 10 stove on a previous boat. It was an awesome cooker and one of the few boat cookers with an oven worth using. Suggestion for your scraper that may help speed things up more. 1. Always draw the scraper in the same direction. Pushing with the scraper is rather ineffective, and will dull the edge that much faster and gives you another chance to gouge the wood my accident. 2. Get more scrapers, and a good file set. The edge dulls quickly, and it can actually be more effective to have a bunch of them on hand to take a few strokes with, and then take a short break to touch up with a file and make sure your edge is true and hard. Also having a range of sizes can be very useful when dealing with trim and such. It might not seem like it is any easier when you stop and touch the scrapers up after only a few strokes on each, but if you spent all day doing it then your back and shoulders will really notice the difference in amount of effort you actually put in. Good luck, and thanks for the videos.

4.10 I worked on a boat some years ago where the owner had drilled a hole in the finger clip and then platted a piece of cord, attached to clip then passed out of the hole. it worked very well and no broken fingers.

Hi Mads, just getting through your videos, love watching them and they're very informative so I'm getting loads of ideas and learning a lot. I hope to buy a boat during the winter this year, something that needs a little updating ready for next summer! Keep up the good work! Paul

when you rewire, you might want to think of using tin plated multistrand wire. won't break and it conducts way better.

I plan to :) svb24.com has some very good quality "marine" wire :)

Godt gjort, Mads! It's looking very good, even the sanding and scraping. Very inspiring to me as I refurbish my US 27 sailboat here in the Seattle area. I agree that laminate is a smart choice, especially when considering non-essential weight on the boat. Why add more than you have to? Oh, and $1200/year for keeping your boat in Skive? That's very cheap, by American standards. We pay more than twice that around here. And I thought everything in Denmark was supposed to be more expensive! :-) Hilsen fra Whidbey Island ("Fjerne Kyster!") Bob Elmer

Watermelemon! FYI "Tedgar-PUR" spray dissolves/breaks down cured PU foam so it can be ripped away easier. Use it on your next boat refit :-)

In my marina (which you visited last summer!) it is $4200 per year for a slip adequate for a 32-foot boat. Again, I'm moving to Denmark!!!

If you are left handed, you may consider swapping the location of the sinks & refer. I think I would use stainless steel counter top instead of formica. It's so much nicer to be able to put a hot pan down without worrying about damaging. What fuel does your stove use. I think most people are most concerned about choosing their favorite fuel. I don't think you would ever use 3 burners so if you stick with a 2 burner you might be able to create a small storage space behind the stove and still allow for reasonable swing. more shots of Jukell please.

@rickjames4882

Have you checked out the stove on Emerald Steel. I think they use propane but you could also get a wood/coal burning but it would function as heat as well and you could always keep a pot of hot water at the ready. I think they have a secondary cooktop or something for warmer climates. You make me tired just watching but I guess as a younger guy I did the same thing. Best of luck.
@SailLife
@SailLife 8 лет назад
Interesting I'll take a look :) I think I'll stick with propane (cooking) and diesel (heat) :) A lot of the places I plan on spending time don't really have a lot of wood :) Haha, no doubt I've got a lot of work ahead of me. Still, every time I go up the latter I can't help but smile :)

2 quick thoughts: is now not a perfect time to run new wiring for the new 12V system? Pictures of Jokull sanding might be the best thing ever (better than watermelon and lemon even?!)
@SailLife
@SailLife 8 лет назад
I could rewire the 12V system now - and it would be a heck of a lot more fun than sanding - but I'd prefer to take care of the portlights before winter sets in :) To do that (the way I want to) I need to paint at least part of the salon :) In the end, it comes down to personal preference :) Hmm, perhaps I should rename Jökull. Henceforth he shall be known as Clickbait the dog ;)

Lemon on watermelon! Great I can add that to pepper on strawberries, pepper in pancakes, soda water in waffles, orange juice reduced on breakfast sausage, ginger in maple syrup, vodka in pastry dough, etc.

To accelerate the hull drying: See if you can protect the area from flooding; Consider taping a curtain of black plastic from the water line to the ground and allow for an air entrance on one end and then get a long piece of black plastic pipe several inches in diameter and place it - like a chimney - from the water line vertically up to get natural air flow moving through the tent that is heated by the sun and will suck the moisture from the hull by one of those reliable physics principals I can't remember.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) Right now, I'm using mostly 80 and 120. In my experience 120 is fine for stuff that will get painted or varnished. However, I'm no expert :)

did you get my email on the shower pump?, its basically a lunch box with a course mesh filter, float switch and bilge pump in it , the pipe from shower drain goes into it directly and it pumps the grey water directly out without it actually going into the bilge, just t'eed in ...i love it. maybe common but i had never seen one and bought one ready made but easy to make and solves issues etc can be used for sink etc too! .

@SailLife 8 лет назад
Hey, John :D Sorry I must have missed your email. I'll check later today! :) I'm planning on building something like that for Athena :) I can't fit any of the premade ones I've found so far. Without a doubt a much better solution than letting the shower drain to the bilge! :)

Another great video, Mads! My 2 cents. Keep the galley the way it is, and just spruce it up like you are doing. The galley on that 40 looked really nice. Is there some type of rebuild kit for that stove? That Force 10 was insanely expensive!

Great video as usual. About the stove, I'm considering replacing mine with a diesel stove from wallas. Advantages are to get rid of the gasbottle, the open flame and the risk of explosion. Also limit the risk of running out of stove fuel when cruising remote loations. Have you considered diesel stoves? Would be great to get your opinion on the subject.
@SailLife
@SailLife 8 лет назад
The more I read about the diesel stoves (for cooking) the more intrigued I get :) Obviously the diesel stove has more moving parts and electronics so you're sacrificing some simplicity. I like simple thinks :P Hence the Refleks stove for heating. But I'm very intrigued! I'll take a closer look :)

Hi, I must admire your energy. I am also very interested in what you plan on your electronics, I mean your plotter, radar, AIS, autopilot depth-sounding etc. Are you going into dedicated aparel or,.. since you are developer, go for something like opencpn on a solidstate PC. Nice video by the way

Thanks :) I'm a big believer in "smoke em while you got em" ;) My back is in better shape now than it has been for the last 4 years. I don't want to waste that opportunity :) Very interesting topic! I'll most likely end up with a fun mix. Lots of sensors from Maretron, chart plotter from Garmin and OpenCPN + iPad as a backup. A new exciting piece of kit finally showed up on my doorstep a few weeks back. I think I've mentioned it in a few videos :) It's the iKommunicate. I'll see if I can get a quick sneak peak of it into the next video :)

Mads.. not sure if u know but almost anything for boats is much cheaper in Sweden for us Danes... Take a look at seasea.se a three burner is like the price u would pay for the one u have now, here in Denmark. u save like 500,- on a quality Baltic life jacket etc. great video as always... good luck

Since everyone loves Jokull I had a few questions regarding how you take care of him on the boat. I also have a dog about his size and I have been worried about making sure she is cool enough during the hot summer days and warm enough during the winter. Can you let us know how you plan to manage making sure he is safe and happy while you are away from the boat?
