In this video, I install the first of the three new hatches from Vetus. Butyl tape is used for bedding the hatch.

Also a fan of butyl tape on my '76 sailboat. Used it to re-bed an old bomar hatch on the foredeck. To reseal the lens into the frame, I used Dow 795. Anyway, will be easy now to reorient the hinges aft once you sail to somewhere warm :)

Butyl tape is so great! My dad taught me to make a tiny string of it and wind it around every single screw near the head for about 1/2 inch before screwing anything into the deck, even if there was an epoxy plug (he was maniacal about keeping the core dry and having access to ALL chain plates and such to inspect them once every month or so).

This _may_ be a little late :-) For a close approximation (without a scale): - pour the desired amount of liquid into the cup, mark the "full" line - pour half out into a second cup & discard. You now have 50% - repeat for 25%, and again for 12.5% - mark that as the "hardener" line - then you can pour in hardener to the lower line, then fill with paint to the top line for a 87.5 : 12.5 solution. The scale was clearly the best option though. Love your videos!

Hi Mads! Thanks for a nice series of DIY refitting of a sailboat. I hope your knowledge will come in handy in as I aim for getting a sailboat myself in the future. I didn't read all the comments, and as this episode is somewhat old now, you might had this idea yourself, or in another comment in a later episode. If I should mix Sigmadur and hardener I would calculate the weight by using the density. I looked it up and Sigmadur 550 has a density of 1.3 kg/l and the hardener 1.03 kg/l. Then you can use your good old trusty scale. ;) Happy sailing!

Hi there Mads, Happy New Year and thank you for so many great vids. Have been following your progress for a couple of years whilst completing an almost identical refit on our 30 year old 43 footer. It's nice to share the highs and lows with you. As an aside, have also mounted my hatches etc with buytl mastic, love the stuff. One thing to consider may be the use of Tef Gel or Duralac on the machine screw heads to stop the inevitable galvanic corrosion issues between the SS and the alloy hatch frame. I have discovered this screw up the hard way in the past. Anyway thanks for keeping me inspired to push on! 👍

Happy New Year to you Mads. A sealing arrangement I never thought of was a friend of mine did his hatches using, of all things, toilet wax gasket. He bought a couple and took the wax and put it on the hatch then installed. When I asked why he said that is what he has always used, it resists almost all chemicals, never gets hard stays flexible and creates a vacuum when tightened so makes a vacuum seal.

Perhaps this has been brought up already, but the use of Tef-gel is highly recommended under the heads of the machine screws where they contact the aluminum hatch flange. The PTFE in the Tef-gel helps provide a barrier to prevent stainless steel to aluminum contact. Otherwise, as always keep up the good work.

I am on my third sail boat all of which have had leaking ports, hatches and chain plates. I have used butyl rubber tape on every one including setting of deck winches and teak bright work. I am in full agreement that it is by far the easiest and best material for maintaining water tight integrity. In extra hot summers it still sometimes expands outwards and has to be trimmed off. You do a first rate job of anything you you install, well done. You are the type of person I would love to purchase any boat that you have owned as they are certainly going to be very well maintained.

I love butyl tape! We work with it all the time.my guys use it for sandwiching together ductwork (hvac) when I replace ducts at schools you see it all the time that’s 30-40 years old ands it’s just as if it was added yesterday. Great stuff! I think it’s anti-microbial also but don’t quote me lol. Great video 👍🏻
