SAILBOAT REBUILD - Laying the GLASS on the GRID - Plastskador repair week 4

Hi guys,
This week Patrick is finishing of the middle of the grid before moving back to the final compartments. I am in the middle of some electrical projects as well and I'm happy to have a rant about the cost of small basic cables for the navigation system. I also compare keel bolt sizes a little with the Elan next door.
As always, thanks for watching and supporting guys.
All the best, Chris

They are correct in using poly if that is what the boat is - as you want to stay consistent, especially since Gelcoat will be added. By using different materials (epoxy) you create an area that is stronger than and behaves differently to the surrounding areas and thus will cause other issues down the line. Especially if you need to do additional repairs in the future to areas adjacent. People parrot epoxy cause they hear it is the best/strongest and it is a reflex action to damage. Any time you reinforce an area one needs to calculate where the load will be transfered to. If the boat is poly stick to poly or maybe move up to vinyl Ester - which is what I do to add a little bette performance without putting things out of whack.
@SailingAurora
@SailingAurora 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for the input, and sorry late to reply. I think you are absolutely right. The hull was made from Vinylester on this boat, but with the amount of poly they added it doesn't matter too much what material they used. Cheers, Chris

Watching this one year after the upload. Congratulations on such detailed explanations on the process of a repair of this type. I am sure it will all end well for you. You have certainly made us aware of the potential fragility of this type of construction although the quality of repair appears top notch. As a coastal day sailor i cant help but think i would opt for different compromises if i was selecting a sail boat to go travelling but thats why every boat is a compromise. You have clearly thought yours though. Genuine best wishes to you and am really enjoying how you are upgrading Aurora. A new subscriber.

a couple of inspection holes in the top of the grid might help for future inspection, just big enough to get endoscope inside to look around. You can get one for under $30 that uses your phone as a screen
@SailingAurora
@SailingAurora 3 года назад
Hi there. The holes will be drilled again, both for water to move between the compartments and to the bilge pump, and also so we can use them for inspection. Yes, an endoscope is invaluable on a boat, we are now on our second:-) Had so much use for it, especially when running cables. Cheers, Chris & Tanja

Chris, the glass work looks fantastic. A boatyard with a lot of experience is going to do the correct repair. They know what their doing. Production boats as we both know take some short cuts to save money. However, spend a few extra bucks and add wiring channels around the boat. It wouldn't add too much to the end of cost of the boat. I think once the repair is done you are going to have a much stronger hull.

You’re right yard yard does a perfect job don’t listen to oldies unprofessional comments they’re all dreaming about theory practice and theory is not the same thing boats are not made in a laboratory I have been working in this field for more than 35 years . By the way I started looking at your videos because you were in the ground and I have just purchased the same brand Hanse 588 Taubin Ask built the same here as yours and as I was watching your video from when you picked up your boat I saw my boat on the dock well I wasn’t owning it at that time but it was mine your wife said that’s a big One and you mentioned the name I think it was funny good luck we are sailing around the world starting this summer for five years

@@SailingAurora Yes I’m sure it gives a tremendous amount of discussions ,dut I think you can definitely rely on the company where you are . my experience as a previous mentioned I am third generation boat builder I eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner since I was a child I have been working with fiberglass growing up in a company producing fiberglass boats in Denmark Henriksen’s jolleværft I’m educated in WALSTED boat yard Svendborg 1989 to cut things short I have had a company in the south of France making boats working on luxury selling yachts and power boats for 20 years before that I was sailing a little bit everywhere with my sailboat before getting serious I sold my company recently and I’ve been living in Mauritius for five years . I have for sometime wanted to sail around the world but as my mother was still an older lady I didn’t want to go on the trip and she is not here anymore so now it’s time for that adventure. I’ve had luck in my business and some other investments so I could pull the plug when I was 48 years old when I moved to Mauritius I’m now 53 i’m currently in South Africa because I am a surfing fanatic next to my sailing . So I am preparing the best I can my trip remote at the moment as probably most people I bought my Hanse 588 just before leaving to South Africa it is in imperial at the moment I’m selling to Croatia in a months time to do some things I wanna do to get it totally ready for around the world the ,work there is a bit cheaper because of the labor . we are installing a freshwater maker 360 cameras for sailing in bad weather from the inside removing the Captain cabin in the front where there will be lots of toys 😄 diving equipment Windsurf and many other things. Oh yes by the way I’m also putting in a laundry machine dryer there is already solar panels but I am adding two more panels on top of the T top The boat was already extremely well equipped I got it for a good price negotiated hard I guess corona might have been my chance to get a better price it was owned by a Russian they have used it really only one season as 2020 has been complicated for traveling as we all know . My name is Jens Henriksen You can find me on Instagram Jensantibes My girlfriend and I will also make some sort of blog for RU-vid once we get going just for the fun of it. "It will be as good as new" - NO IMHO it will be much better! Awesome work. HDMI cable: What's about another rel. cheap plotter from the same family? They would share maps and information via Ethernet. And you may use it below deck on other tasks while the helmsman / woman is not disturbed. In sum you should consider a Ethernet switch in the radar cable so you may add several high speed devices. But: The second cable way you are adding to the helm will always be a bargain. Price: Simrad cable - I assume the other systems are not any cheaper.

Thanks for the comment, appreciate these words. Sorry for the late reply. I looked at getting another plotter downstars but they are so expensive and I want the monitor to be multi purpose. The ethernet cable and HDMI cable is now run through, progress is happening :)

Apoxy is better but polyester is ok. Polyester will flex more and give. Apoxy just snaps under load when it reaches that critical stress point. I think the repair shop is right to use a slightly more flexible bonding in your situation.

Downside with using polyester is that you, in the long run, have to protect it from water. Not a problem inside a boat. Polyester has been used for decades and it will bond sufficiently, specially with the good preparation, that seem to be taken care of by Patrik. Polyester has a solvent that is a down side when i comes to working environment, with good protection not a problem. Epoxy, which has no solvent, is delicat to use, and you have to be very careful when it comes to dirt/fatty dirt even fat from skin when handeling the fiberglass mat. The list of pros an cons could be made enormously long. This will be just a very good and strong repair. It looks like you have had good luck in finding a skilful man like Patrik.

Hello, I was looking at your previous video involving removing the boat from the water and dropping the keel. At the 15 second mark in the video, you show the keel and haul. Where the haul is deflected at the back of the keel there appears to be a large radius half circle. This may be just the water pooling at the deflection, or possibly a large stress crack in the glass which the bottom paint is hiding. You may want to play it safe and strip an area of paint there to see if there is damage to the underlying glass.

With even the slightest gap forming would lead to that substance turning into powder over the years of sailing in the ocean. Even without a grounding. Good points on the technological advances. Believe it or not some technologies of the past have actually proven themselves over the long run. Unlike we see from these new technologies that "in theory" should be great, lol. As a fellow IT engineer I'm interested to see what route your going down with the Raspberry Pi with regards marine stuff. I seen theres a nmea2000 pihat for them which could be useful for hooking up. Pican 3. Amongst other linuxgizmos.com/can-bus-hat-for-raspberry-pi-4-offers-rtc-and-wide-range-power/ R-Pi could be quite an inexpensive (in marine terms in particular) and expandable project, as long as its got the usual secure considerations with the 4g connectivity and completely soaked in a brick of epoxy.. Also theres the Moitessier HAT2 (www.rooco.eu/products/moitessier-hat-2-raspberry-pi-openplotter-ais-receiver/). Im looking at similar arm based projects (once I can get back to my boat). Sailing is a great digital detox option though nice to mix the 2 things if were into that. Keep up the great vids. Fair winds. David

I could see a boat chock full of Seeduino Xiao's too. Cheaper than an Arduino, 3-$25 and more powerful and the size of a large postage stamp. Uses the Arduino IDE and Libraries. IIRC 12 i/o pins that are analog/pwm and digital with I2S pins. The Pi comes with Node-Red too. You could use MQTT and SQLite easily together to capture Xiao data and share it in a web browser throughout the boat. Sensors, motor control, servos there is no end to the fun. Marine electronics are still stupidly over priced.

I was watching some of your earlier videos, you installed a keel/ground sensor. Did you ever get or see any alarm/notification of it when the boat was grounded? Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Hi Marc. Not rude at all, you are not the only one that have been asking:-) It's estimated to be around 400 working hours and approx €40,000 incl. 25% VAT. Best, Chris & Tanja

If you had a keel made that would break up at it's top and deform, you could avoid this anguish, every time you ground your boat. Let the boatbuilders do their magic and don't burden them with foolish ideas like running wiring through the bilge.
@SailingAurora
@SailingAurora 4 месяца назад
You might be right about a "safety cushion" there, but I would be a little worried about the other all strength of the keel itself. It needs to be strong as the forces when sailing can be quite alot. As for the wiring, alot of boat builders are running wires through the bilge to keep the weight low. As long as the wire is sealed and doesn't interfere with anything, I can't see too much disadvantage, maybe you have alot more experience.
@stanleybest8833
@stanleybest8833 4 месяца назад
@@SailingAurora Make some sense. Redesigning a keel would markedly protect the bilge zone. Your wires? Naval vessels run wires in their ceilings. Your wires weigh nothing. You'd keel should have a few bilge pumps, but mostly , it needs access. You swab it and dry it now n then or you have a dirty boat.
@SailingAurora

@stanleybest8833 I believe I am making sense, the top of the keel cannot be weak, it must be strong, it is a critical part of the boat. As for the Navy, its a war vessel, they have good reasons to do this. My engine to house battery cables weigh quite abit now as I have upgraded the alternator, probably weight close to 25kg, I really want that weight down low. As long as the wires are sealed in the bilge, I can't see any good reasons why not to run them through the bilge.

Hi there. Do you mean the grounding or the repair?
@smokken10
@smokken10 3 года назад
@@SailingAurora The repair. The delamination on the hull must be taken from the outside and inn. Craks in the gelcoat will make water go inside the composit and make a lot off problems later in Auroras life. All composit repair must be camferd not cut, they also use to littel fiber to resin. Ther is an ratio to follow.
@SailingAurora
@SailingAurora 3 года назад
@@smokken10 The damage is currently been done on the inside at first and then where the damage is on the laminate, this will be ground down and reglassed. We did a little of this on Friday actually on the outside. Are you referring to Epoxy resin or Poylester resin? When you are laying out Polyester it is much more forgiving than epoxy. The Polyester being used is also Isophthalic, which is much more resistant to chemiicals and water intrusion than orthophthalic Polyester. To layup multiple layers of glass, I believe it would be very difficult to follow a strict ratio. Over the years PlastSkador have had little problems with their layup using this method.

I don't quite get the point of this series. We are just seeing how professional boat-builders carry out a major repair (at a huge cost no doubt). But there is no connection to how a normal skipper could tackle the same problem. Chris seems to do nothing, so what's the point?
@SailingAurora
@SailingAurora 3 года назад
Hi Cuthbert. The purpose of the series was exactly to follow the process of the professionals, and of course a 'normal skipper', as you call it, can do the same. And hopefully there would be something to learn from seeing how the professionals are doing this, and what tools they are using. Cheers, Chris & Tanja

A "normal skipper" will want to do exactly this--hire a professional to fix the keel and grid damage caused by a hard grounding. You can't green goop and paint your way out of this, and losing your keel or having the grid fail is the sort of thing that can get everyone aboard killed pretty quickly.
