My website and articles www.chasinglatitudes.com
Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solo or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.
I offer a wide variety of services including consulting where I will take you through the entire process of how to budget properly, choosing what vessel size will work for your needs, what type of vessel, I will help you shop for vessels, determine offer prices, schedule surveys, talk with brokers, teach you how to do your own pre-survey, walk you through hiring the correct surveyor and help you avoid all of the common pitfalls that you will find when purchasing used sailing vessels.
The consulting does not stop there, I will be with you every step of the way and long after you have purchased your vessel as consulting also comes with lifetime access to the members area,.
Chasing Latitudes hosts a large, active private members area where the members are more than happy to offer their own experience to solve problems, host private videos for ASA Sailing quizzes (ASA 101, 103, & 104), and live stream videos which feature anything from member cruising to boat shopping, boat comparisons, and other live content with chat from the subscribers to my RU-vid channel and channel members.
It’s time for YOU to get on the water. Come aboard!

This one is a no brainer for me. Great boat and functional layout. We found for two people a 35 footer is as big as we want. Anything bigger becomes too much work for day sails or coastal work. We hated our 40 footer for short hops and day sails but it was a great harbor queen. Or favorite boat was a 34’ on deck wooden ketch. I hate swing keels but shoal keel makes sense.

Well, I genuinely love the 'garage' for tons of reasons: H20 maker, Honda 2KV generator, toys & food storage, Code 0 & the list goes on. I, too, really prefer an L shaped gally & don't mind using the stairs as my butt holder (sometimes snugger is better?). If airflow/light is good, I do like the large aft cabin, but airflow is critical to happiness. The 'space' as shown in marketing videos is so difficult to assess. They use ultra high def, blow up the image & use ever so slightly curved lens to increase the edge to edge visual area. I was shocked at how small the current Dufour 44 is inside- I felt like a giant- and that's 44" LOA!

In my opinion, the best of the "plastic fantastics" for a solo or couple. The garage and large shower, and new O-ring fittings for the rigging, simplifying things, yeah, she is sweet. Unless you "Require" a lot of room.

I love mine. Easy to sail. Plenty of room for a solo guy or couple if she is not too needy. Lol. With a few ad ons it would be perfect. I’m still making short day sails from the marina but Solar, inverter, and water maker would be a must ad first.

Looks like a nice vessel to me. I like how people say things like I need at least a 50' boat, however as you basically pointed out you may have more living space in a well laid out 35' boat than most 50' boats. As for me, I like a shorter boat when it comes to docking and mooring. the sub 30' boats where I live never have any problems finding protected shelter, whereas the 50+ boats often do.

Too small for me..i would rather consider 38 to 42 foot range as long as i can get less than 6 foot draft and intercoastal capable to escape hurricanes.

I only can repeat myself. This sailboat is the golden pick for me. We chartered sun odyssey 349 a few times, this was the first ever charter with my new license and with my GF who was a complete newbie to sailing and we could handle it with ease. Truth to be told, we are both small (me 170cm my GF is 159cm) so we did not have a problem with its size. We have chartered many boats in the 32-42 ft range from various shipyards (Bavaria, Dufour, Beneteau) since, but we still prefer this model. If I could get a 2 cabin version with lazy jack, I would sell my home in an instant to buy it. This combination is nearly non-existent on the market, or at least I have never seen one for sale in Europe. Yes, if we could afford the sun odyssey 410 with 1 head so we get the full-size V-berth, I would pick that over the 349, but with the criteria mentioned, I can not think of a better pick. But keep in mind, we only used these vessels for a few weeks at a time maximum and talked with the charter operators over a beer about what they think about it, and most of them were really happy with the running costs of these ships. I saw many of these boats in charter fleets (3 cabins and in-mast), even today, and this is for a good reason I think.

One other thing to add to this conversation is that me and my girlfriend are really used to "small size" living and small spaces. We live together in a 30sqm studio and we do not have an issue with it. So we do not have the "standard" requirements when it comes to living spaces. We both agree that when we have the money we would like to get something similar in size since it would fit our needs perfectly and we do not need a bigger vessel, even tho we would like to transfer our whole life to the boat.

Not too small for single. Add a companion and it's too small. What about diesel engine and fuel capacity? Solar? Air conditioning? Navigation? Auto and all the electronics radar sonar, etc. Pirates? To me it is a nice boat for day sailing.

Plenty big enough. The twists to ownership are special land and long sail aspects. You're under 12 foot beam, so trailering is not oversized. Note that the 34.9 has a stainless bathroom sink. You wash a lot of things there and a plastic sink is peeee yewww. How do you want your batteries. Batteries in parallel is an immediate F. Where will you mount your solar panels? What is foolish? That extra bowsprit to tangle fools who routinely brush you. You might even get charged for the length. I like a hanking jib. Less barbell weight aloft. Less to break. Don't go anywhere without an extra 12 volt chest freezer and it means your boat fridge can be 1 temperature and not so cold. I won't have a boat without a CB radio.

In answer to your question, too small for a couple. Happy house, happy spouse is a saying I like better because things work both ways and on a boat especially you have to be a team! I like the Oceania better.

For a full time live aboard this looks a little small. If only they made this layout with the 38's removable bulkheads. It would be perfect for me sailing the Florida Gulf coast and maybe the occasional trip to the Bahamas.

I love your videos. This is a great vessel but are you going to want longer? Fir long term living I would select a little longer boat.

No backstay, main sail is going to be laying on the spreader going downwind . I am concerned about the raked back spreaders--- don't like. I like wing on wing for downwind. These boats the rake may not be enough to worry

It looks like a great boat but with the potential of having 2 people living aboard full time I think it may be a bit small. I think the 38 would be a better option.

I think this is a good vessel and it will meet your needs but suspect you really want longer. However, an extra 3'-4' isn't really going to make that much differences perhaps this is good. The real Q us are you willing to go a little shorter than you want.

For me the B&R rig is no bueno. I don't want the limited sailing angles off the wind and added wear on the main sail from chafe against the spreaders. I'm not worried that the rig is weak and will fail on this boat any more than I would be on a Hunter with the same rig. I just hate the idea of being limited to broad reaches and not being able to take advantage of a nearly strait shot sailing a full run. Why sail the extra difference? Agai that is just my opinion. If I wanted sailing angles like that I would get a cat. Not a fan of the linear galley either. The boat is great for a day sailor or weekender but I would not choose this boat to live on personally. It is definitely not large enough for a couple. I wouldn't even consider it.

Absolutely agree, the B&R makes this dead on arrival. Everything else about the boat looks great. Give it standard rigging and it would be a winner.
