In previous videos, we searched for our perfect boat. Just a few weeks ago in mid-February, we found her. This week we're on our 1976 Tayana 37 (CT37) Taiwanese build designed by Robert Perry. She boasts a teak deck, roomy quarters, and needs a lot of work, and the projects have begun! sirenwilliams@thesirenslog.com
This week, we're headed south on the ICW in Florida, exploring a little spoil island around Stuart, playing with hermit crabs and letting Bentley run. We’ll continue on, making our way down to Peanut Island in West Palm Beach. We're traveling with large dog, a small tender, an iffy outboard, and our rigging can not be sailed.
We're Siren and Captain Hal. We're surfers, we're fishermen, we're yacht brokers, we're boaters, we're captains, we're divers, we're ocean people, we're Floridians, and that's what our channel is all about!
We do hope that you'll subscribe and follow along!

Mr. Bentley, he is a very intelligent dog and at the same time a mischievous dog, he crosses, he lies down, he wants to drive, he wants to dive, he escapes and he is always among you, never on the side or in a corner. What a beautiful dog this Bentley is. 💡👌

I feel ya on those bridges 🙄. Peanut Island was too congested for me, and the power boaters in the area were idiots. I kept going south to a very nice anchorage just south of the Royal Park Bridge in downtown West Palm. Hopefully your radio issues got taken care of.

I think that’s where we were initially going but ended up going where we did so Bentley could get off on peanut island. It didn’t look like there was anywhere for us to get off in that other anchorage. It turned out alright! Definitely busy but not that bad just for a night.

Yeah we do want do have at least one handheld on the boat, but we just bought the boat and we’ve bought SO many other things and it’s all a matter of just figuring out what’s most urgent and getting it. We figured at least one out of two would work when we left. They seemed to work in Daytona. Could be the antenna and Hal also played with the wattage or something and we’re figuring out if there’s a remedy for these but also looking at handhelds.

Hey guys, thank you for these videos. Its great having your perspective. I love the Tayana 37, its just beautiful. Could you tell us the $estimate for the standing rigging replacement for this boat?
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 5 месяцев назад
Well… I’m not totally sure. I’m ballparking $15k for the rigging to have a rigger do it where we live BUT we have to completely remove the chain plates and get new ones fabricated and move them to the exterior which is a huge project, and if we get the bronze chain plates from Port Townsend Foundry, they’re a few thousand just to have fabricated. Nevermind whatever the cost is for us to do the work ourselves. I can’t even imagine the enormous cost to have to pay someone else to move those chain plates. We will likely do the rigging ourselves so for us it’s more about the cost of the rigging and I’m not even sure.

I always point into the current and or wind when holding station waiting for a bridge to open. That way you have steering, way easier than trying to back into the current.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 5 месяцев назад
That’s a solid point but way easier said than done for a lot of these tight spaces on the ICW. There were a lot of moments where we couldn’t have turned around to avoid hitting the bridge if we’d needed to, or at least not without yelling at other boats to please move out of the way so we could. Down a lot of the ICW in that area, it’s very tight, and very shallow on both sides and the channel is super thin and turning around in it is already a sketchy thing so we didn’t see that as a great option. Not in this area at least! We found it easier to adjust speed to arrive just a minute before the opening but inevitably you’re always gonna have that one time or that one bridge that opens a couple minutes late and there’s no way to turn around. 🤷‍♀️ We’re finally out of there now! Haha woohoo!
@jeremybarrow2455
@jeremybarrow2455 5 месяцев назад
Antennas are a common failure. High winds will break the wire inside it easily. We used to keep them low on our nav mast just so we could get to them easier. Because they were going fail lol. Best solution was to use four of them, one on each quadrant around the base of the pole (6” pipe pole) and we would mouse them off on the top with fiberglass clamps to keep them from flexing in the wind. Worked great and we rode out at least two named storms every season. They lasted a whole two years in that configuration!
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 5 месяцев назад
Hahaha Dammit yeah. Well Hal wants it above the mast because he says we will get better range that way, and moving it lower will cut that in half. 🤷‍♀️ Our antenna “appears” unbroken on the exterior, but who knows. I’ve been up there a couple times and I’ve seen it but Hal hasn’t been up there yet. It’s a 3’ antenna, though. Definitely a pain, adding height to us.
@jeremybarrow2455
@jeremybarrow2455 5 месяцев назад
@@TheSirensLog we need to make a mount that is retractable for sailing boats that use the intercostal waterway. I have a design in my mind that is very simple. The material used, used to be a little expensive. But, it would add two more lines up the mast and a small cat head at the base. That way you could have a top mounted antenna that could be retractable to your height at the mast top only. Then you could use a 6’ antenna and not having to worry about the extra height. It’ll still transmit and receive retracted, it’ll be linear instead of radial though. That’s why I would recommend a front mounted position. You are usually hailing a bridge off your bow anyway.
@jeremybarrow2455
@jeremybarrow2455 5 месяцев назад
@@TheSirensLog The radio station below was working still though. Probably the coax connection on the back of the topside radio had some corrosion. He’s right about the range with the hight. But, that being said, a handheld will still go out to 5 miles on high power, at 3’ above sea level.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 5 месяцев назад
@@jeremybarrow2455 I think he checked the connections but I’ll be sure. That one down below “works” but you can only barely hear what they’re saying back. If there was ANY more noise I wouldn’t be able to make out a word. I’m just hoping we don’t have to replace the whole unit.
@jeremybarrow2455
@jeremybarrow2455 5 месяцев назад
@@TheSirensLog oh! That’s definitely a coax and potentially the antenna for that problem. Below deck transmits and the topside one receives. Make sure to use dielectric grease when you replace them. I don’t recommend heat shrink over the connections just because it tends to keep moisture in rather than keeping it out.

I have a question about dinghies... do you have to have registration on a dinghy? I've never seen registration numbers on any dinghy before. But, according to what I've read if it has a motor on it it does require registration.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 5 месяцев назад
Yep, you do. There used to be a law- something like if the motor was under 10 hp, you didn't have to register it, but they changed all that. Some people never put the numbers on, though. I'll be honest, I've had a number of these small tenders from other boats I've lived on, and I never put the numbers on, but I knew that where I was, I'd never get busted. However, the way we're traveling, we have to have them. We did get stopped in Fort Lauderdale because at one point we were just running to the dumpster 100' away, and then spontaneously decided to cross the ICW to go somewhere, and got stopped and technically we had like 6 violations, but they charged us for 2, even though one of those was kinda lame because it was our registration sticker which we'd JUST bought but Hal dropped it in the water while trying to put it on. But we literally left with NOTHING- no lifejackets, no lights, nothing. We did get the numbers on the boat, but putting those things on an inflatable is like throwing uncooked pasta at the wall and expecting it to stick. A lot of cruisers cut little boards and paint the numbers on the boards and hands the boards from each side.
