Not the first time either, failed to tack, im relatively new to 20knt winds and also being reefed. This boat has a lot of freeboard so i think its more susceptible to catching the wind on the side of the hull and it catches me out, although i did a hundred tacks yesterday and this was the only one i failed on. I thought it only fair i share a fail

Hi, just one hint, even if I know that solo is more difficult. When you reef the mainsail, with your configuration, I think you should add a rope that keeps the "tail" of the main near the boom. Otherwise, the reefing lines will put too much stress to the sail. You can see clearly the excessive tension at 1:09 on the back reefing line. I just did the same mistake few days ago... Nice wind, I'm jealous :)

You probably worked it out already, but the reason you couldn't bear away to gybe was because the mainsheet was pinned in hard, the further off the wind you turned, the more it was trying to turn you the other way, and eventually it heeled to when your rudder lost grip. Right at the very start if you'd let the main sheet right out, she'd have got some speed and come around. You can also depower the main when going downwind by easing the vang / kicker, this will allow the boom to lift and spill wind out the top of the sail. Its definitely not wind on the hull, just the sail trim.

Good on you to share your fails - I am new to sailing myself, and I feel like seeing everyone sail perfectly actually doesn't showcase the difference between perfect sailing, and not perfect sailing. Good on you! 20knt winds sounds so rough!

@@GOBFBC2 thank you, im not brand new to sailing but im i am brand new to this much wind, it is a lot for me and yesterday (when this was filmed) was the biggest wind ive sailed in for a prolonged time. Also, with only me on, its very light and quick to heel, in the video there is a similar sized boat out sailing along like it was nothing, i found out later that there was 6 people on that boat which must be the reason its just happily plodding along while im somewhat flustered but nether the less dealing the best i can. thanks for your comment because i was, and am, pretty happy i dealt with it. 🥳 Good luck to yourself in your journey with sailing, its the only thing im interested in! Thanks again

Bro, please pull tight your main sheet before jibing! Otherwise its a question of time before you accidently break somesthing... In my opinion your speed is to low for tacking, try to gain some speed by falling off a little and then powerfully turn the boat.

@@AE-wu7tw yea, i didnt have enough speed, non of this went to plan. I understand your criticism but thats the whole point, it not going to plan. Im not perfect and solo sailing, controlling the rudder, jib sheet, sharply going from one tack to another, hopefully you can understand i had a lot on my plate. This isnt my video of 'the perfect gybe' But thanks for the comment

Also, not letting the main out makes it difficult in these conditions to perform a gybe as it keeps the pressure on forcing the boat to turn into the wind, does that make sense? Ive had it where my rudder seems to nothing against this and would leave me on course for land

@@VikoS21Rudyard true but once you're on a run, the sail depowers and you can bring it back in. Better to focus on keeping the mainsail under control and handling the jib sheets later.

@@MrRoehre yea, i should have done once on the downwind, i was, for no reason at all focused on heading upwind.... Im literally learning something new each time I go out. Thanks for the input bud 👍
