Battling the North Sea is one thing, learning how to navigate a relationship is the harder. It would have been easy to edit out the bits where Silje was worried. Im glad you didnt.
Silje brings a whole new dimension to these videos; it's educational to see sailing viewed through the eyes of someone new to it. She's also very charming; it would be interesting to hear her comments on some of your wilder solo sails in future episodes...... Hope we see much more of her.
Laughed my ass off, that was great! But seriously, gotta give big props to Silje for her willingness to try something new - heeling over, windows being underwater and all the creaks and groans is a lot for any new sailor to get used to and I thought she did great. Happy you're giving yourself a vacation Erik, everyone needs one from time to time, even Vikings!
As someone who has recently taken on the challenge of learning to sail, I know how Silje is feeling. It does take some time to get used to how the boat should feel, what is normal, and of course what isn't. Heeling over can definitely be worrying when you're not used to it, especially when the water is very close to the gunwales. We nearly had a capsize a couple of weeks ago after getting overpowered by a rogue gust of wind that caught us by surprise; it was a scary moment but I've now deposited the incident safely in my experience bank and will be back out on the water twice this week! I hope your health is improving and that you're recovering well Erik.
"As someone who has recently taken on the challenge of learning to sail, I know how Silje is feeling" Spot on. I learnt to sail when I was very young (about 8 or 9 years old). Even now, after 30 or so years, and spending a lot of time in the ocean, I'm still afraid of it. On the other hand, I'm so glad I did it (and I still do) because it gives you an appreciation of adventure and how powerful the ocean and climate is. It's right up there at the top of life experiences.
Haha, I took a good buddy of mine dingy sailing. It's was pretty gusty, I caught a good gust of wind and the boat heeled over about 40 degrees (give or take. People watching from shore said it looked like we were capsizing). The rail was underwater for a second and his eyes about popped out of his head and looked like he was about to bail out over the opposite rail. As we shot forward I was assuring him, "I got it, man, I got it!"
My wife and I are really enjoying the dynamic you two have. We're both very different and very strong willed, so it's refreshing for us to watch the intensity and patience you both bring teaching each other new ways of being. Best of luck to both of you and thank you for sharing your adventures. Cheers!
She is so brave, to go out into the deep blue, far from land but in good hands, so funny, had a good chuckle and Eric's video editing to ensure dignity is kept at all times was a nice touch
Erik that was adorable when your girl got upset questioning if what you were doing was ok ! By now she must be an expert herself ! God bless and safe sailing.....
Oh man ... I'm just catching up now a on a load of your videos ... Silje is a comedy goddess, bless her :) "DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING?!" :) Glad you both had a lovely time fellah. You deserve it.
Nice change of pace Erik. Congratulations on your girlfriend. Very pretty and a nice on screen personality. Skilshare can’t bail her out of this one :) On the job learning is the only way.
Ah what an awesome vaca!! Cudos to Silje, she did great her first time sailing! Hope she enjoyed it, too. I like that she is not afraid to ask "Erik, do you know what you are doing?"🤭 Cause we all know you can be a little crazy, lol! Very best wishes to you both!!
lol... my first time healing over was in a 22ft Catalina, rails in the water, my boyfriend laughing, I was not. That was 30 years ago, and now we both enjoy watching your videos and can't wait to get our boat so I drive her with the rails in the water.
Hey Erik!!! I enjoy every one of your videos!!! But... come on, be soft on Silje!!! She's new to boats and sailing!!! I'd very much like to see her with you on all your trips, so it doesn't get so lonely out there!!! Well done, keep at it!!!
LOL, I grew up sailing with my Mom and Dad and Sister on smaller McGregor 25's etc. and every time the boat would heal over or we would take a little blue water in my Mom would grab the railing like it was welded to her arms. This brought back those memories seeing your GF sail for the first time..... My mom never did get over the fear of the heal but overall she loves sailing. We plan to purchase a 40 to 50ft, My wife and I, who has not sailed except a few times in our 19ft West Wight potter on lake James NC. USA. I enjoyed the video maybe we will do the same to break her in before we spend a ton on a boat.
What a great Episode Eric! The most extream sailor on RU-vid taking a novice partner to sea. I can not wait for the next one. You are going to have the most popular sailing channel for sure! 😅
Priceless, Silje asking you if you know what your doing. So HAPPY for you both, sailing in Greece must be a real change, yet beautiful none the less. Best to both and we will see you both in the Odyssey Challenge.
What a brilliant start for your journey by having Athens as the first point. Lycabettus Hill is breathtaking place on top of Athens. Thank you for sharing!
Eric, i love your videos but I have to say this is one of the funniest. Siljes comments are hilarios and you are a very nice couple. I am looking forward to part two and wish you both a lot more adventures like this. All the best, Manfred
Bloody good video, I got a real laugh. Thank you both. Hey Silje, I took my wife of 35yrs on motorcycle trips, you reminded of her reaction's so many times. We have six children now!!!! Keep sailing you'll love it, Erik seems to know what he's doing sort of!🤣🤣
Me and my girlfriend love that video. Watch it 3 times till now. Slije is awesome. „There is some water on the window.“ „that CAN‘T be normal“ 🤣🤣🤣👌 We love her. ❤️ Please take her with you, for sailing with your beautiful and strong Tessi. 😎👌
As always Erik, your story telling telling is fantastic and you have found yourself a partner there that compliments your sense of humour and sense of adventure.
I’m not normally a fan of Mediterranean sailing, so I studiously ignored these videos until finally I realized it was you, Eric! I must say they are great; thank you, and I hope Silge becomes a regular feature in you life.
Nice to see you sail warmer climate. That does not mean the sailing is easier. Nice of you to include us in your Greek adventures! The islands are so so breathtaking!
She doesn't even know with who she 's having the priviledge to be on the boat with but we all random guys from around the world just laugh about it lol NBJS! Have fun guys! Greetings from Kefalonia Greece
Liked your video, but thought it wasn't entirely the best move to have 7h straight sailing with a new crew member without telling her about how sailing works. But I'm glad it worked out well, cause it's treading on dangerous grounds with a new girlfriend and introducing her to sailing. Many relationships broke apart after the first sailing cruise (mine fortunately didn't and we had 2m waves with 6 Beaufort winds)
Love seeing the mixture of modern type sales and the old boat it just is a really nice visual and the efficiency of that downwind light sale it’s a necessity when you hear about people sailing in Mexico or down to Hawaii they need that light fabric
Sailing in warm waters after recovery from a serious illness is a perfect decision. You should also try turquoise waters on the Turkey side. Silje sounds like real Viking warrior 👍 Happy sailing 🤗
Dear Odin, Please welcome Erik into Valhalla. No...he's not dead yet...but he told Silje to "sit down and relax", so he'll be there soon enough. SKÅL!!! 😄
Hi Erik. Another great video. Thank you. Happy to see that you had a great trip. She is sooo nice. Silje is too kind with you. Silje has to watch your videos in the north sea. Then, she will understand that healing, the waves … are normal. There is no risk.
I am so glad you have such a cute girlfriend. Hopefully she will start loving sailing with you. Avoid the North sea though. You have a great story telling voice. I grew up in Goteborg, Sweden and now since many years living in Rhode Island, USA. I love watching your videos.
Wishing you and Lady Silje continued goodnatured sparing sessions - absolutely loving Silje's NBJS "No Bull Just Silje" bringing it! 🤘 Erik, mate, I do hope you survive 😂 ...💯❤⚓🖖
